Lots of things out of stock in the supermarket again?

Wondering if it's just us locally but pasta, toilet roll, tinned tomatoes and long life stuff all seem to be completely out of stock again :(

Is it the same when you are? I was hoping this wouldn't happen again but I suppose with the new rule brought in, people realising Christmas isn't going to be the same as usual and Brexit looming, perhaps people have started stocking up.

It's all so bloody depressing

OP posts:
MintyMabel · 16/09/2020 12:16

Seems good here (Scotland) except lettuce. It's a bad year for lettuce

And yet bizarrely, when buying a mixed salad bag, they seem to be over lettuced.

Serendipity79 · 16/09/2020 12:16

Tesco online today is showing all the freezer stuff as only available for delivery until the 20/9 which is a bit odd unless they're changing suppliers or something. Lots of things I buy have been "removed from range"

awesomeaircraft · 16/09/2020 12:18

Oh dear. All good here (London) but a few threads like this and people will empty the shelves. It is a vicious circle!

Snowpatrolling · 16/09/2020 12:18

I took my nan shopping yesterday and we were saying this, I live in Bristol and she in Somerset and seem to be having the same issues. She was told by her dr to stock up and be prepared so unless they think something brewing?

iwishiwasonhol · 16/09/2020 12:19

i work for a supermarket ,and we are having to limit loo roll ,hand soap and pasta to 2per customer

nonicknameseemsavailable · 16/09/2020 12:22

all looked normal when I went the other day - went to Tesco at the weekend and all was normal (not recovered on the pasta aisle yet, flour very low stocks but never really came back to normal, didn't look at tins other than some soups and it looked ok, cereal been lacking all summer but there was some. Went to Asda recently too as it is the only place that sells some gluten free stuff I can eat and it all looked good stock in there too.

I don't think people will panic buy so much again surely?

Whatwouldscullydo · 16/09/2020 12:23

Agree that these sorts of posts are purely intended to scaremonger and should be banned. Completely irresponsible

Maybe supermarket's are taking advantage a bit aswell.

I mean low or low stock of one thing does mean people will buy something else. Its awfully handy to be able to flog the stuff they have that doesnt sell so well isn't it?

I went to tesco last week and there was piles of tuna but not the 4 packs just the single tins. So tuna not in shortage but customers have to pay more buying separate cans?

There was plenty of sweetcorn to. No green giant original but plenty of own brand and green giant no salt. Again all single cans not multipacks though.

Last time during the big lockdown there were lots of packets of all the branded pain killers. It was the own brands missing. So again it was there but you would have to pay more.

I'm.sure plenty are being idiots but some of the stock deficits seem a bit...well..convenient?

KatherineJaneway · 16/09/2020 12:23

more sporadic shortages of odd stuff, like Worcester sauce.

I found this! Couldn't get it for love nor money.

well said

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 16/09/2020 12:28

I found it easy to get a slot on Monday - fair few subs and few out of stocks when it came yesterday but not that bad.

I did get some extra tins - I was thinking more about January and Brexit. If it's all fine will mean cheaper shop January which is always welcome.

Though number of covid cases here are rising rapidly and there may well be further restictions coming so possibly people are planning ahead.

Tesco supply chains do seem partiularly prone to problems - took weeks for them to restock after beast from the east caused delays in this area when other supermarkets were back to normal.

WishMyNameWasWittyNotShitty · 16/09/2020 12:30

This is so daft, but for months I have been looking for plain(no fruit etc) mini shredded wheat, but supermarket versions as it is sooo expensive, I cannot find it anywhere!

RedRiverShore · 16/09/2020 12:30

It’s on Amazon to buy.
Zilla1 · 16/09/2020 12:31

I expect some people have started thinking through the implications of isolating if UK school year bubbles pop.

RedRiverShore · 16/09/2020 12:32

Some of the buying will be for Brexit rather than Covid I would have thought

Cuppaand2biscuits · 16/09/2020 12:32

Yes! I went on monday, no pasta or baked beans.

ShellsAndSunrises · 16/09/2020 12:33

Our supermarket has been completely redesigned, they seem to have reduced how many varieties they stock of a lot of things. Although the staff have said this is related to Brexit rather then Corona.

No real shortages though. Eggs and coriander have been a bit sketchy all summer but mostly fine, just seem to randomly sell out.

DespairingHomeowner · 16/09/2020 12:33

@pastandpresent, @KatherineJaneway :

Food products often go out of stock, especially if more niche/not massive sellers like agar etc, it’s to do with manufacturer issues (eg difficulty in getting ingredients)

My online shopping seems normal so far 🤞🏼but expect we might see more out of stocks due to Brexit affecting ingredients supply of some items

Frouby · 16/09/2020 12:34

I did a massive shop when the kids went back to school, mainly because it was easier to nip in M and S than do a full shop and because I also did a big spring clean so had run down the food cupboard in anticipation of emptying it and cleaning it and I bet a few people have done the same.

I've also been buying the odd extra thing, or not letting my cupboard run down at any rate since then just incase we need to self isolate. Could get a family member to shop and drop fresh stuff off but the list would be smaller if its meat, veg and bread than that plus cereal, pasta, beans etc.

SimpleComforts · 16/09/2020 12:34

It wouldn't surprise me. I've been adding a few tins and other long life things to each shop, to make sure we're well stocked "just in case" and I'll never be down to my last loo roll again.

I don't think I'm doing anything selfish or irresponsible, we're talking less than £5 of "extras" a week but if everyone does the same....

Plussizejumpsuit · 16/09/2020 12:34

Nope all fine where I am in Newcastle / Gateshead.

Whatwouldscullydo · 16/09/2020 12:41

Isn't re-arranging part of trying to get people to buy more stuff?

Instead of being able to go straight to where they know their stuff is you have to walk around trying to find it.

So less stock and a "refit" id be a bit suspicious to be fair.

I remember in lockdown I struggled to get my hazelnut and coconut milks . Conveniently there was wbole new stack of cashew milk in a set up bigger than all the other milks in morrisons.

The chewing gum had disappeared in sainsbury yesterday. The little end of aisle dispenser thing. Gone.

eufycurious · 16/09/2020 12:46

Pasta is on offer here! No signs of shortages at all. What are are you in OP, I wonder if it's more evident in places that may be under threat of local lockdown?

Vivana · 16/09/2020 12:46

I just grab what I need before the store opens. No problem for me. Perk of working in a supermarket Grin

Callisto1 · 16/09/2020 12:48

I remember reading an article last time that the problem with empty shelves wasn't so much that some people went crazy and bought 20 packs of pasta and loo roll, but that everyone bought just that little bit extra. So I guess when we buy 2 packs of pasta rather than 1 collectively we have issues, because of how optimised our supply chain is.

Bowerbird5 · 16/09/2020 12:51

I agree I live rurally and we have struggled to get sugar for baking. I was wanting to do something for MacMillan as I usually do. I haven't been going shopping much but DH and sons all on look out for Muscovado and brown sugar as I want to make a few things that will keep a bit longer. DH found some at a shop frequented by farmer's wives so three bags of brown sugar. They had flour too. Luckily we have two mills not too far away so I think they stepped up production during lockdown. No egg problem as lots of us have hens and any surplus goes at the gate and on the village website. Some of the kids are making extra pocket moneyGrin

I think with those of us that are older it is a case of keeping safe 8Snowpatrolling as flu and coughs and colds weather looming. Dip in immune system will mean more chance of catching it. Also people not wanting to be caught out when Self Isolating with as Zilla* says bubbles bursting at school. We have classes in one Primary and two Secondaries off already and I have three friends SI elsewhere.
Living in the country we always have a bit extra and we grow some veg. We have a veggie van that delivers too. I don't hoard though.

I did imagine people squeezing past the toilet roll hoards that some Mumsnetters had on here.Grin I had visions of floor to ceiling in halls up and down the country. Did anyone need it? We normally buy a bag of 9 and we never had a shortage here but I imagine some places did.
