Lots of things out of stock in the supermarket again?

Wondering if it's just us locally but pasta, toilet roll, tinned tomatoes and long life stuff all seem to be completely out of stock again :(

Is it the same when you are? I was hoping this wouldn't happen again but I suppose with the new rule brought in, people realising Christmas isn't going to be the same as usual and Brexit looming, perhaps people have started stocking up.

It's all so bloody depressing

OP posts:
pussycatinboots · 16/09/2020 11:56

No food shortages here (Cheshire) but the medicines aisle - paracetomol, gaviscon, vitamins, plasters (?!) in tesco was pretty much empty.
Obviously someone with rickets had eaten something that didn't agree with them and fallen over?😂

Shitfuckoh · 16/09/2020 11:58

@SockYarn

Just proves how fucking stupid people are.

Even in March when everything was closed down, there was never an issue getting food. OK, so shops were having to ration pasta, rice and baby milk to stop one numpty buying 3 years' supply. But there was ALWAYS PLENTY TO GO ROUND.

I have 3 kids, I always keep the cupboards full as never know when one may get a bug etc even before covid. Now knowing it's likely we'll be isolating at some point, I am trying to make sure we don't risk running out of anything. That doesn't mean I'm bulk or panic buying though! 1 child with a dairy allergy and 1 child with limited foods due to ASD means there is certain things I can not risk not having/being able to get.

So yes, whilst there is plenty to go around, I'll do what I've always done and refill the gaps when it comes to shopping!

Badbadbunny · 16/09/2020 11:58

Stocks around here have been haphazard for weeks which is definitely getting worse.

Stellaris22 · 16/09/2020 11:59

SockYarn the issue for us was self isolating and not being able to get a delivery slot. Supermarkets could have been fine for all we knew, but we couldn't leave the house.

Fannybawz · 16/09/2020 11:59

I tried to log into Tesco’s the other night AT 3AM and it was too busy I had to go back later

But if a shocker

frumpety · 16/09/2020 11:59

All the supermarkets here are fine and well stocked, but we don't have a Tesco so maybe it is supply issue for them ?

wherestheotherone · 16/09/2020 11:59

People preparing for 14 day isolation with kids. There are so many families affected now because of the testing shambles.

Also people returning from holidays and preparation for isolating over winter. Pre lockdown shopping. I know a lot of people who are preparing for the winter and increase in numbers. I have bought beans, tomatoes, pasta, flour and died my freezer for the next time I have to isolate. It's only a matter of time for us.

Cecilia2016 · 16/09/2020 11:59

I went to my local Asda and they had few pasta on the shelves but everything was stocked up.

Oldraver · 16/09/2020 12:01

I tried to buy some gloves from Screwfix and there were non to be had among the hundred or so lines.

I have severe eczema on my hands and have been trying to not use too many

I didnt know if it were a supply issue or the world is going mad again

Callisto1 · 16/09/2020 12:02

Not noticed any dramatic food shortages here (Scotland). I would say though that since lockdown there seem to be more sporadic shortages of odd stuff, like Worcester sauce. Also the supermarket we do click and collect from has never gone back to its huge selection of flour.

I should probably build up an emergency food stock since I think it's only a matter of time before we enter a local lockdown when everyone has to isolate when kids get sent home Sad

littlemsattitude · 16/09/2020 12:03

@Stellaris22

Been using milk and more for years (I like reusing milk bottles), fantastic service.
I'm about to sign up if you have a code that will help us both out I'd appreciate it.
SedentaryCat · 16/09/2020 12:04

My local Tesco extra is flogging off the pasta and flour that they obviously overstocked during lockdown. These are at a 50% reduction.
Shelves were well stocked on Monday evening when I went in - although painkillers are hard to get hold of. Having said that, I noticed in January/February that their own brand paracetamol was out of stock for weeks at a time.

wherestheotherone · 16/09/2020 12:05

Not died, filled. I've filled our freezer.

Not stock pilling but buying an extra one over last few weeks to store. I've also found that with the DC back at school my bare cupboards can be restocked.

heymacaroner · 16/09/2020 12:06

@SockYarn

Yay! Let's start scaremongering again and send out everyone to clear the shelves! Hmm
This. Everything is fine around where we are. But these kinds of posts just frighten people into stockpiling
Laiste · 16/09/2020 12:07

@Whattodo1610

Our shelves are dwindling .... I think people are panic buying before everyone else starts to panic buy
So ... pre-panic buying? :)

sigh.

You just know there will be a percentage of people reading this who are going to bung in an extra bag of this or that when they go shopping next and that is all it takes to tip the balance in shops.

Longdistance · 16/09/2020 12:08

I’ve had my washing machine, dishwasher and fridge freezer break. The choice of all these were very limited everywhere I looked. Lots of out of stock.
Food wise, I’m finding lots of fresh vegetables are not so fresh.

SantaClaritaDiet · 16/09/2020 12:08

How many people are actually stock piling right now after reading this...

LemonTT · 16/09/2020 12:10

Another agitating and scaremongering post. I wish MN was responsible enough to take this type of thing down.

OP you may well have a genuine observation but it badly made and thoughtless.

Panic buyers are a massive pain, particularly the bog roll bandits. I mean, we all need bog roll...but do you want to live in a world where no other fucker can wipe their arse?

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 16/09/2020 12:12

I think people are bracing for a lockdown and doing "just in case" shopping.

RedRiverShore · 16/09/2020 12:12

I bought extra a month or two ago to see us through the winter, lots of bulk cleaning stuff, toilet rolls, hand wash, tissues from Amazon on offer, no point in leaving it and causing shortages, also it’s more difficult to buy bulk from supermarkets, that’s what places like Amazon and Costco are for.

CorianderLord · 16/09/2020 12:13

All normal here in London

SockYarn · 16/09/2020 12:14

Totally agree. Now the next time any of the however many hundred people who have read this post go into the supermarket they have this little voice in the back of their head saying shortages, lockdown, panic buying, shortages...

So they buy 6 extra bags of pasta and 36 loo rolls. And some rice and soup.

And then lots of other people spot trolleys pilled high and add a bit more into their trolley too.

Andbefore you know where you are, the supermarkets are breaking up fights between people over the last can of tuna.

Agree that these sorts of posts are purely intended to scaremonger and should be banned. Completely irresponsible.

Thewiseoneincognito · 16/09/2020 12:15

I have dejavu

pastandpresent · 16/09/2020 12:15

Some of the stuff are missing. Cannot get tinned artichokes and agar for a while in local tesco. Wonder if they got rid of things which aren't popular to provide space for others.

Normal stuff are totally fine here.
