Lots of things out of stock in the supermarket again?

Wondering if it's just us locally but pasta, toilet roll, tinned tomatoes and long life stuff all seem to be completely out of stock again :(

Is it the same when you are? I was hoping this wouldn't happen again but I suppose with the new rule brought in, people realising Christmas isn't going to be the same as usual and Brexit looming, perhaps people have started stocking up.

It's all so bloody depressing

it has been a running joke for years that UK supermarkets have empty aisles, and run out of random items all the time. It might be that they don't hide the gaps with other products, but there's nothing new.

I haven't noticed any different, there's always items missing from my shopping. It hasn't got better but certainly not worst around here.

NotAnActualSheep · 16/09/2020 11:20

Ah yes...students starting term too. Good point! Pasta plus tinned tomatoes plus canned stuff= standard student meal...

NaughtipussMaximus · 16/09/2020 11:21

Enough reserves to isolate for a fortnight, at least.

PollyPelargonium52 · 16/09/2020 11:22

Definitely less choice in our local Asda plus Tescos.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 16/09/2020 11:26

No pasta in our local supermarket this morning.
Tins very limited too, possibly due to people stocking up for having to self isolate. Bit worrying though.

All seems fine here (Scotland) but our schools went back mid August so maybe the stockers did their thing then.

Nothing remarkable to speak of here. There's always the odd missing item, but that's not unusual. Some premium toilet rolls are on offer, which doesn't suggest a shortage.

AriettyHomily · 16/09/2020 11:33

Yep, couldn't get any curry sauce / paste or roti last night from our local Express Tesco. The whole shelf of dry goods had been taken out.

We went to the curry house instead:)

Yay! Let's start scaremongering again and send out everyone to clear the shelves! Hmm

KatherineJaneway · 16/09/2020 11:35

I noticed this starting last Saturday. More people and trolleys at Tesco, shelves not bare but quite a lot emptier than they would normally be. Lots of space on the toilet rolls and kitchen rolls shelves. Friend's husband sad he went to Aldi on the weekend and they had no pasta left.

I also had issues getting a online shopping slot for this week, only a few days not available but it seems like people are starting to buy more in anticipation of having to self isolate for 14 days.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/09/2020 11:35

Maybe people are living in fear of another lockdown or having to self isolate as they get coughs and colds over autumn and winter and can't get a test?

I couldn't get white wine vinegar in Waitrose the other day. And Essential full sugar tonic water seems to have been completely discontinued, as has standard blackcurrant cordial without sweeteners everywhere.

But I think a lot of cheaper basics are moved aside at this time of year to make room for the more profitable luxury Christmas stuff.

gingerwhinger0 · 16/09/2020 11:38

I’ve seen a few sites telling people to stock up for the second wave maybe it’s that.
But no shortage of tinned sweet corn near me. Even bought a bag of flour last night, to use not to stockpile.

unmarkedbythat · 16/09/2020 11:38

Not that I've noticed but I would expect it, with everything that is currently going on.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 16/09/2020 11:40

Seems good here (Scotland) except lettuce. It's a bad year for lettuce.

AriettyHomily · 16/09/2020 11:41

@Baaaahhhhh

I've still got all the packets of dried pasta I bought last time, never used it Blush. Only three or four, but I prefer fresh, and was always able to buy that, so did.

No problems with Waitrose or Ocado. Funnily enough though, lots of items on two for three this week, and also got a stonkingly good offer of £20 off when buy £200, so bought a few cupboard items, because why not?

But that's why other people couldn't buy it when they needed it!
Stellaris22 · 16/09/2020 11:42

Haven't noticed anything where we are. We stockpile, but that's just buying extra tins every week. So with a weekly shop we will get an extra 4-5 tins of hot dogs, beans or a single packet of pasta. We were caught out last time and don't want to be in that situation again.

As long as people aren't clearing shelves and just buying a couple of extra things it makes sense.

Whattodo1610 · 16/09/2020 11:43

Our shelves are dwindling .... I think people are panic buying before everyone else starts to panic buy

TheWindOnTheMoon · 16/09/2020 11:45

I needed to get some bread flour and yeast last week and our local Asda didn't have either - big gaps on the shelves for other flour too. Have also had out of stock message in Ocado for skimmed milk but hope that was just temporary blip.

mindutopia · 16/09/2020 11:46

No issues here, though I struggled to get chicken thighs last week. Interestingly, I haven't been able to get tinned sweetcorn for quite awhile, but it was finally back in stock last week. Maybe it's just all coming to my Tesco.

Cheeseybites · 16/09/2020 11:46

Everything in stock in all our supermarkets. Past aisles full, tinned foods full, plenty of everything

Abraid2 · 16/09/2020 11:47

@Springxchicken

I'm in Lincolnshire and I've been able to get pretty much everything lately. Although tinned sweetcorn is also absent. A few weeks ago there was an issue with sandwich meats. No ham etc. I tend to just put a couple of extra tins in my shopping a week and make sure I have a large bag of pasta for emergencies. I've only just got my shopping back down to £80 a week. It went up to £110 a week in lockdown because I was having to buy whatever I could get.

Just a tip, although I appreciate it's not as cheap. I joined milk and more. I get my milk from them. I also get orange juice, bread, teabags, occasionally butter and biscuits too. It's just good for essentials. I can't express how much milk and more have saved me since march. They were the reason my kids had breakfast in those early weeks.

Another vote for milk and more.
Stellaris22 · 16/09/2020 11:49

Been using milk and more for years (I like reusing milk bottles), fantastic service.

SockYarn · 16/09/2020 11:50

Just proves how fucking stupid people are.

Even in March when everything was closed down, there was never an issue getting food. OK, so shops were having to ration pasta, rice and baby milk to stop one numpty buying 3 years' supply. But there was ALWAYS PLENTY TO GO ROUND.
