What are the chances ? Sky News are reporting the possibility and a second lockdown has become a reality in Israel.

How likely do you think it is ?

I can't believe there was a time when I really did believe things would be back to normal by autumn Shock Oh to be so innocent!

Leakinglikeacolander · 14/09/2020 00:03

I think they'd have to police the streets this time as there is likely to be a high level of non compliance.
Someone upthread said it would be political suicide, but there can't be one government member who thinks the Conservatives have a hope in hell of being re-elected next time, whatever happens.

Staffy1 · 14/09/2020 00:08

No. I think hospitals will do less non-covid things again, private hospitals will shut again. Pubs, restaurants, gyms, etc. will shut but everyone will still be expected to send their children to school and go to work despite public transport not running to full capacity again.

Vivana · 14/09/2020 00:09

If there is another lock down I certainly won't be working through it like I did the last one dealing with hundreds of. People 5 days a week. My anxiety was lsky high and dealing with abuse and rudeness on top,. I will ask to take leave or be signed off by my gp

houselikeashed · 14/09/2020 00:09

Well DH has worked one day in his main job since March, with no money from gov at all. So it wouldn't make much difference to us. The self employment financial support is a joke, and highly unfair.

Ecosse · 14/09/2020 00:12

Another lockdown just wouldn’t make sense. The death rate from COVID is very low indeed- unless you have serious underlying health conditions (even then- an 80 year old with co-morbidities still has a 90% chance of survival.

The focus has to be on protecting those who are at risk, rather than locking people at home and stopping then contributing to the economy who are at no or very low risk.

Although in this scenario all the people who work in pubs, restaurants and gyms etc won’t be going to we work

And neither will be they furloughed

And that is why those places will remain open - imho

TheDragQueen · 14/09/2020 00:14

1 in 10 work in hospitality and tourism. No idea how many work in gyms.

Theatres etc have already been shut down
So if we we shut down gyms, hospitality again we would be looking at, what, nearly 10 million unemployed. Which would then bring the entire economy down.
The country would be bankrupt and we wouldn’t have an NHS to protect.

Staffy1 · 14/09/2020 00:16

@rubbishatballet

The NHS is planning for the mass vaccination programme to start in October, and I think the gov will do everything to hold off on another lockdown until they know how that's going (or not).
Are you sure this isn't for flu? That would be the normal time they do the flu vaccinations and there is no news of a covid vaccine being ready.

Frightening

@Aridane

Oh Christ I can’t bear endless threads on here of people describing themselves as “key workers” again every 5 mins instead of saying they work in Aldi/are a nurse/a cleaner in a hospital. Feels like only 2 mins since that twattery ended

What a fucking patronising post (says a non key worker who Salutes the retails workers, hospital cleaners etc)

How is it “patronising”? I have full respect for everyone who worked and does work through all this shite but I still find people describing themselves as “key workers” arse clenchingly cringey. Just say what your job is ffs
Staffy1 · 14/09/2020 00:23

@AlecTrevelyan006

looks to me like cases have been rising since 7 July (630) having reached a low point of 352 the day before. Today they are 3,330

coronavirus.data.gov.uk/cases

Hospital admissions on 7 July were 206. Today there are 141
Patients in hospital on 7 July were 2,397. Today there are 884
Patients on ventilation on 7 July were 197. Today there are 79
Deaths reported on 7 July were 54. Today there were five.

so, the cases numbers have been rising for more than two months but all other important numbers have fallen. And some people want another lockdown?

madness

Yes but at that stage weren't they only testing people who went to hospital? So in reality there were probably a lot more cases than were recorded. Now a lot more people are being tested. I doubt it's become milder, just that the number of infected people is not as high (yet) as it was in July. At the rate it is rising it might not be long though.
snappyoldfart · 14/09/2020 00:24

I think 4 weeks we'll be back in lockdown. Just a wild guess, gut feeling, but I'm off buying Christmas gifts this week as I strongly suspect we won't have enough delivery or infrastructure if the high streets are shut and everyone orders online.

MadameBlobby · 14/09/2020 00:28

I think that’s right Staffy. We are probably at the stage we were a few weeks before lockdown but ignorant as no one was being tested.

Howallergic · 14/09/2020 00:29

They won't attempt another lockdown.

ceeveebee · 14/09/2020 00:57

They started community testing in May so no that was not just people in hospital.
However ONS estimates for end of June/early July were 25,000 cases per week (vs reported cases of around 5,000 per week). We are about back at that level now based on reported cases but probably in reality more like 30,000. And yet hospital admissions and deaths have halved.

Dastardlythefriendlymutt · 14/09/2020 01:25

Think it will happen by the end of October

Flaxmeadow · 14/09/2020 01:26

In case anyone hasn't noticed, we are still in lockdown. Some restrictions have been lifted but it never fully went away.

Didn't people listen to what the Gov't and scientists, and in other countries, said back in March? They told us we would probably be in a state of "rolling lockdowns" for months, possibly years. They provided graphs and everything.

Loonyloo87 · 14/09/2020 01:47

Why do some posters seemingly want a second lockdown? And why would they lock us down again for only 5 deaths (today figure) just madness really

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 14/09/2020 01:56

Thanks as not only have people not notice they (minority) have been ignoring all scientific Covid risk mitigation measures and rules for some time hence the new wave currently. Probably mixture of Covid fatigue, stupidity and rebellion. Not particularly challenging science as if we don't do our civic duty to eradicate we will be forever losing more lives and livelihoods - simples. Don't expect any magical cure as that won't happen either as with the "promised" world class test track and trace. We do have world class Covid outcomes as only beaten by USA and India for now. Very sad to see how (some) Brits don't care despite 50k excess deaths so far and a collapsed economy with WTO Brexshit deal to make things even more problematic soon.

HeIenaDove · 14/09/2020 02:01

There is also the stress of those who have had to lockdown in their homes.............that are still covered in flammable cladding.

Maze76 · 14/09/2020 02:01

I do not believe that the public have been given the full facts about the virus. It just doesn’t make sense. Yes, there will be a second wave, the relaxation of the lockdown was done to boost the economy, to give people a taste of normality. They knew that more restrictive measures would be required during the winter months. It’s a big ask to impose full lockdown for 12/18 months. This virus hasn’t gone away, but we are being almost stage managed into believing the threat is low. It isn’t and we will see that in the coming weeks.

Kokeshi123 · 14/09/2020 02:02

The country where I live never had a full lockdown, just closed the nurseries and schools etc. If they close again, sorry but I will be hiring a babysitter by the hour to look after the toddler and continuing to work. I am not going to keep packing up work for weeks on end, and I refuse to try and homeschool an older child while a toddler smashes the place up around me. Happy to mask up and avoid big-spreader type situations but I am not putting myself and my kids through THAT again. It was hell last time.

KitKatastrophe · 14/09/2020 02:38

we have been spoiled over the summer - able to go outside
We have different definitions of "spoiled".

Surely a government with any sense would close down certain parts of society first, or put heavier restrictions on. Places where social distancing doesn't happen - they must be a aware of these. I'm thinking pubs, theme parks, larger events.

Topseyt · 14/09/2020 04:02

@RingORingORoses

Highly probable

The poster saying they ‘won’t comply’.... you won’t have much choice with everything closed again

I mean that I won't comply because I will never again agree to not going to the help of my elderly parents as their health was failing and they were hospitalised.

I'm not much of a socialiser so other things being closed or restricted affects me very little although I do have every sympathy for those relying on those industries to make a living.
