Another National Lockdown

What are the chances ? Sky News are reporting the possibility and a second lockdown has become a reality in Israel.

How likely do you think it is ?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/09/2020 09:11

@Itsabeautifuldayheyhey Spain had a much stricter lockdown than us, stricter mask laws and it didn't help.

tappitytaptap · 14/09/2020 09:17

So how do I work then, if we can’t mix with other households, magic up extra days at nursery that don’t exist? Nope, won’t be complying 🤷‍♀️

Oaktree55 · 14/09/2020 09:18

@Waxonwaxoff0 the reason Spain is in a mess now is they didn’t have an adequate tracking system in place. They also in many areas opened bars etc in tourist season. Their strict lockdown initially did work it’s just they let the virus surge again as a result of the above failings. Unfortunately our track and trace is also inadequate.

ZiggeryZaggy · 14/09/2020 09:21

Sending the “everyone must get back to the office” message out was a bit unhelpful, for organisations where home working was possible.

I am back in, and don’t need to be, but have been told I need to “set an example” for the other staff who were reluctant to return. Really, they don’t need to be there either as they were working from home in a slightly different way. So, I am mixing with several people a week who I had no reason to see in person before.

Our boss just prefers to keep an eye on staff though and wants to know we are there, so that new government line was perfect for her.

RancidOldHag · 14/09/2020 09:27

@MadameBlobby

Mask-wearing (not face coverings) to be worn by law over the mouth and nose outside the home. If you can't comply then, unfortunately, you will need to not go out until you have received a safe, effective Covid vaccine

You seem nice.

It's no different to saying that the exceptionally vulnerable shouid not go out. Different reason (as only one of the groups puts the population at large at additional risk). And people seem very ready now to say openly 'disabled - get thee hence'
planningaheadtoday · 14/09/2020 09:28

@rubbishatballet I'd heard this about the oxford vaccine too.

They have the vaccine they are currently testing on standby to give in this country as soon as the last phase of testing is complete. It's ready to go once safety checks are finalised.

They are rolling out flu vaccination right now. They can immunised in 6 weeks as they normally do. Then start on the covid vaccinations once and if the go ahead is given.

That was my understanding. I follow the vaccine carefully as I'm in the shielding group and it will be life changing to me.

MarshaBradyo · 14/09/2020 09:29

It’s not so strange that roll out could be planned atm. It doesn’t mean it goes ahead but every stage of vaccine development has overlapped.

MadameBlobby · 14/09/2020 09:33

Well yes it is @RancidOldHag (love the username btw!) because the advice to the ECV to shield was not mandatory.

BabyLlamaZen · 14/09/2020 09:37

all this "back to office" crsp.

Why not just say "look, work from home where you can. But buy your lunches and coffees out so we can support those businesses."

You never know, being straight with people might actually work.

Tootletum · 14/09/2020 09:38

Half a million people will be losing their jobs in the next six weeks. That's without a lockdown. We'll be paying for the last one for the next 5 years. So, no, it won't happen..

Underhisi · 14/09/2020 09:42

"It's no different to saying that the exceptionally vulnerable shouid not go out."

None of the general population should be telling anyone they should not go out. My son was advised to shield but he still went out for walks because otherwise it is likely he would have ended up being sectioned.

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 14/09/2020 09:45

I mean that I won't comply because I will never again agree to not going to the help of my elderly parents as their health was failing and they were hospitalised.
As I understand it, you could always provide care and support to those in need of it. However, if visiting hospitalised patients is banned again, you would have no alternative but to comply, horrific as that scenario is.

I'm not much of a socialiser so other things being closed or restricted affects me very little although I do have every sympathy for those relying on those industries to make a living.
So your stating you won't comply doesn't mean much if you could still visit your parents to provide support and other things being closed doesn't really affect you.

What aspect are you not going to comply with? 😂

Newjez · 14/09/2020 09:53

@rubbishatballet

The NHS is planning for the mass vaccination programme to start in October, and I think the gov will do everything to hold off on another lockdown until they know how that's going (or not).

Ok. Now what you said, and what this article says are not the same thing.

This article says that the NHS have been asked to submit plans for the mass vaccination by the END of Oct.

No one is getting covid vaccine in Oct. I get my flu jab the end of September, and they have no idea whether the flu jab and covid jab are compatible. So even if it was ready, it wouldn't be used in October.

Now, if the plans are submitted by the end of October, then I'm guessing November and December will be used to put the infrastructure for those plans in place.

So, if we are really lucky, and the vaccine is ready by then, we might get a vaccine in the new year, Feb march possibly.

This is very different from what you said.

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 14/09/2020 09:53

The the outpatient clinics are finally back up and running and the backlog being worked through.
They might be in your hospital/trust. My DH has another telephone appointment at the end of this month following the one he had 3 months ago. His GP requested a 7-day urgent referral for his prostate. I'm not sure how they can diagnose or rule out prostate cancer by phone.

Another relative is having a MH check by phone too rather than hospital consultation. This is in another county.

rubbishatballet · 14/09/2020 09:55

@MarshaBradyo

Absolutely, and who knows what will ultimately happen, but there is definitely a hard date in October that is currently planned to be the start of the programme.
Spikeyball · 14/09/2020 09:58

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey is clearly a wing up merchant and happy to behave like a cunt in doing so.

Babyfairy0923 · 14/09/2020 10:06

@Southernsoftie76

Reading some of the replies on here it’s like going back to February, nope, won’t happen, scaremongering etc, at least nobody is spouting it’s only flu now. A month ago many posters said a second wave wouldn’t happen, a new poll shows 80% of GP’s believe it will happen. None if us know how the next 6 months with pan out but I believe we will end up with so many local lockdowns and restrictions that it might as well be a blanket lockdown.
Exactly this!
PremierInn · 14/09/2020 10:11

If most people had believed from the start that it was at least a year, more likely two, of this perhaps thet would have approached lockdown more realistically (either earlier or alternatively, less strictly as per Sweden)
The human condition appears to be a total inability to see reality so there you go

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 14/09/2020 10:30

"Mask-wearing (not face coverings) to be worn by law over the mouth and nose outside the home. If you can't comply then, unfortunately, you will need to not go out until you have received a safe, effective Covid vaccine."

@Underhisi:
Clearly torturing profoundly disabled people is something you are in favour of. You must be getting really excited about all the ways you can make people like my son suffer.
I know it would be terrible for some people but drastic times need drastic measures. The virus is still being transmitted too freely and strictness, on a temporary basis, is called for.

People who cannot wear masks aren't immune from the virus. They could have the virus and be asymptomatic and pass it on to others, equally vulnerable, who are also currently exempt so not wearing a mask. Your son could have the virus, asymptomatically, and pass it on to someone else who dies from it.

What would you do if there was a gas in the atmosphere that killed and your choice is between wearing a gas mask to protect yourself and staying indoors away from the gas? Would you not keep your son in , temporarily, until it was safe to go back out?

jasjas1973 · 14/09/2020 10:30

PR, just like testing 500k by October, 10million saliva tests by Xmas or the "game changer" antibody tests... promised weeks ago.

It looks very likely that CV was doing the rounds, pre xmas, across Europe, yet it took 2 or 3 months before deaths caught up, probably because it affected the young and healthy first and they passed it on to the elderly etc.

ATM we are in this xmas stage again, so much like in France, deaths will increase and a lockdown of sorts is inevitable, we aren't even able to keep CV out of Care homes, despite knowing what will happen... a deliberate oversight?

SqidgeBum · 14/09/2020 10:34

For those who are thinking lockdown would fix this, this is from the WHO this morning and is being reported on sky news. Not even a vaccine is going to fix this. We need to learn how to live with it, not hide in our sitting rooms for the next half a decade ...

"WHO devising five-year plan - as vaccine won't end pandemic

Europe's 55 member states are holding an online meeting today and tomorrow to agree on their overall five-year strategy for the virus.

And there's a warning things will get worse across Europe in the coming months.

"It's going to get tougher. In October, November, we are going to see more mortality," WHO Europe director Hans Kluge told AFP.

Mr Kluge also cautioned that a vaccine won't bring an end to the pandemic.

"I hear the whole time: 'The vaccine is going to be the end of the pandemic.' Of course not!

"We don't even know if the vaccine is going to help all population groups. We are getting some signs now that it will help for one group and not for the other.

"And then if we have to order different vaccines, what a logistical nightmare!

"The end of the pandemic is the moment that we as a community are going to learn how to live with this pandemic. And it depends on us and that's a very positive message." "

The use of face masks in Spain differed from region to region though.

All we can do; wash hands, wear masks, stay home if we are ill, try keep big gatherings to a minimum, but still go to work, school, see family. It's literally all we can do. It does accept that people will die but we genuinely cannot stop that happening.

Fluffycloudland77

It won’t work though, Dominic Cummings didn’t abide by the rules last time & people won’t forget that.
What, one man, albeit a Govt advisor, took his family to a second home against the rules and you think everyone will decide not to comply because of that?😂😂😂

We aren't all sheep.

Obviously not everyone, but we do know that his actions plus the government defence of them led to a loss of trust and compliance. The evidence is very clear.

As far as I'm aware there hasn't been any research suggesting any reversal of this phenomenon, though glad to see anything I may have missed. But in the absence of any, it's a fact on the ground. It doesn't go away because some people have feelings about it.
