What are the chances ? Sky News are reporting the possibility and a second lockdown has become a reality in Israel.

How likely do you think it is ?

I think the government will do everything they can to avoid another lockdown, closing pubs etc first. However it may be inevitable if the rates continue to rise.

@rubbishatballet

Are you sure this isn't for flu? That would be the normal time they do the flu vaccinations and there is no news of a covid vaccine being ready.

Yes, absolutely positive. It's the Covid-19 mass vaccination programme - the flu vaccination programme plans are (currently) separate.

That would be like opening the beaches just after a shark attack. Even if it was ready, October is too soon. Who's going to take a vaccine just after a person who took it spine blew up or whatever? I know I'm being flippant, but the press would have a field day.
KitKatastrophe · 14/09/2020 07:16

The change from flatten the curve to almost eradication type policy made me think that there was something about this virus that was not being made public
I seriously doubt that all the governments and scientists of the world have colluded to hide something about the virus.
The change to eradication policy is because that's what the public are screaming for. You've seen people on here, on Twitter and Facebook saying that they will do anything to save one life from covid. The outcry when the government suggested a herd immunity trajectory right at the beginning. The threads of "how can you celebrate that deaths are down to 30 a day, one is too many!"
Those who shout the loudest get heard.

“Trials of a Covid-19 vaccine being developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University will resume after being paused due to a reported side effect in a patient in the UK.

On Tuesday, AstraZeneca said the studies were being paused while it investigated whether the adverse reaction was linked with the vaccine.

But on Saturday, the university said it had been deemed safe to continue.”

“The government's chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, told the Downing Street press conference on Wednesday what had happened in the Oxford trial was not unusual.”

Beautiful3 · 14/09/2020 07:22

No, I'm not doing it again. I followed all of the rules the last time, only to be blindsided by members of the government not doing the same. Those members weren't even punished! One rule for them, another for us ejits.

And just to ask whether they have tested the covid jab and the flu jab together, because I know they haven't and they would never risk giving a new covid jab that close to the flu jab. You're talking porkies comrade, back to the ballet for you.
rubbishatballet · 14/09/2020 07:26

Newjez well it would be about a month - start date is currently mid-ish October and I imagine they would only announce just before they were ready to get going. I'm not going to pretend to know what's going on on the trial/clearance or comms side of things, but I do know something about the rollout side and what various bits of the NHS have been asked to do and over what timescale. Could all yet come to nothing though I guess, however the specifics and scale of the ask suggests to me that there is reasonable confidence that it will be going ahead in some form in that timescale.

Arguably the Oxford delay (assuming it's even the Oxford vaccine, I don't know if it is) could be spun to help instil confidence that testing has been rigorous.

Stinkyguineapig · 14/09/2020 07:28

The gov need to concentrate on the testing system. Theres no point talking about vaccines and saliva tests when the system we actually have for testing has collapsed.
People are either going to give up because they cant get a test, or not even bother.....which will lead to some people staying in and isolating needlessly, and others out spreading the virus.
We dont need a world beating test system - it's not a competition- we just need one that works!!

mrshoho · 14/09/2020 07:28

if we do it will be because the covid testing system is not coping with the demand for tests. People are trying to do the right thing but it is the government that is failing us. We were told that to get the country back up and running we would need fast and reliable tests and this is not happening. Blame the government.

Stinkyguineapig · 14/09/2020 07:30

If we have another lockdown.....wont we be in this position again in the new year?

Valleydad99 · 14/09/2020 07:31

Yes, but the government has no plan B so back to furlough for everyone so that we can one up Spain on how strict on the virus we are!
midgebabe · 14/09/2020 07:33

It is incredibly difficult to flatten a curve of cases of something that is infectious with no symptoms and grows exponentially ...it's an unstable system.

They have flattened the deaths occurring curve for the time being, but to keep that flat , close to eradication is needed

Bol87 · 14/09/2020 07:34

The covid vaccine did NOT cause anyone to be ill. It was paused as someone had inflammation on their spine who was on the trial. They need to determine it wasn’t the vaccine that caused it. Given how quickly it’s resumed, they have obviously easily ruled it out. Stop spreading false information.

midgebabe · 14/09/2020 07:34

It's not just the testing shambles, people need to be able to take time off work to isolate without losing wages

A policy of sick pay designed to deter sickies is no use in this situation

It's not a race to the bottom.
Worriedmum999 · 14/09/2020 07:38

The NHS have been asked to submit plans for mass vaccination by the end of October. Google it if you want to, it’s there. Doesn’t mean the programme will start then, just that they will be ready when it does which I expect will be this side of xmas for NHS staff.

LadyPenelope68 · 14/09/2020 07:48

@speakout
have no idea but sad to see empty shelves in ASDA today- pasta rice, canned stuff, all gone.
In my local Tesco and Sainsbury’s, the shelves were similar of those items again, was a bit dejavu☹️

GreekYogurtWalnuts · 14/09/2020 07:49

If we do end up having to have another national lockdown it will be the fault of people refusing to comply with restrictions and I don't think people will be very happy about it.

All the mask wearing, isolating, social distancing, reducing the amount of people you meet, is so we could avoid another full lock down. It's beginning to look like we've been fucked over by the selfish moron's who claim they know better than the world's leading experts.

Well thanks guys Hmm

MadameBlobby · 14/09/2020 08:05

No it won’t.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/09/2020 08:09

@amusedtodeath1 no it won't. It's the government decisions to reopen everything all at once. The same thing is happening all over Europe, it's not just here.

TheDragQueen · 14/09/2020 08:11

Maybe the whole lock down thing is a failed policy? It’s never been done before in the entirety of human history so we had no real idea whether it would work in the first place.

At the moment the cure is looking worse than the disease.

Ecosse · 14/09/2020 08:14

The Guardian reporting that there will be 670,000 more people in extreme poverty as it is before Christmas. That will leas to hundreds of thousands of health conditions.

You could add millions more to that if there’s another lockdown.

Starting to look this way isn’t it. I’ve been wondering if there naturally has to come a point where they realise they can’t do anything to stop it really and leave people to self police. If there is it might have been better to have reached that point in summer instead of now
