It has been six months and it's now very clear that covid won't be doing away in our lifetimes. A vaccine won't eradicate it (just as a vaccine didn't eradicate flu).

Most of you seem to be willing to accept social distancing and masks for the foreseeable. And I don't get it. We are a tribal species. We literally die without contact and get sick without communication. Kids are learning arrange, stilted ways of being that will just worsen their digital reliance. OCD is being normalised. Dating will be neurotic and masked. Freshers won't make new loves or lifelong friends like we did. As for their working lives...

I wouldn't mind catching covid (indeed I'm sure we all will sooner or later) so can someone explain to me what on earth is happening in their heads to tip the balance? If it only affected us, I could understand (well, I couldn't but this feels like child abuse on a giant scale).

As it turns out code events seem to overtaken your no hospital admissions claim, as of 37 minutes ago:

Hospital admissions and patients have both gone up!

Patients on ventilators.

Aridane · 15/09/2020 18:29

@amusedtodeath1 - thank you!

Aridane · 15/09/2020 18:29

Most people are dying of suicide I know two

This has to be one of the most ridiculous posts on this thread (and it has stiff competition)

Friendsoftheearth · 15/09/2020 18:37

Most people are dying of suicide I know two

Lets not worry about the 45,000 people that died of covid in the UK then.

Not to mention the 930k that have died worldwide.

sunglassesonthetable · 15/09/2020 19:03

. If we carry on like this, we will die out anyway. Hooks ups and unplanned pregnancies must be way down. How are people going to get together?

Tbh I loved this post. 😂 It brightened up my day. But I cant even begin to get my head round it.

But OP doesn't ring true to me at all. Apart from getting most of the facts wrong.

Friendsoftheearth

Here is one of many sources you can get your info from. Have a look at the site. There is lots of info rather than believing everything you read in a newspaper. Works best on a pc.

www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2020/09/COVID-19-total-announced-deaths-15-September-2020.xlsx

Newspapers sell stories by scaring people.

Friendsoftheearth · 15/09/2020 19:29

Not surprising your dodgy link doesn't work! In fact it came up with a security warning, so thanks for that hun by

just believe stuff you read on the internet

DameFanny · 15/09/2020 19:56

It's a spreadsheet of official statistics friend

Pootle40 · 15/09/2020 20:02

I just have to comment @Friendsoftheearth. 45,000 people didn't die 'of' Covid. 45,000 people died who had a positive Covid test within 28 days of death. Many of them will have died of something else - look at all the people who caught infection in hospital when in for other potentially serious illness.

It just bugs the hell out of me when people keep incorrectly trotting that statistic out as it's not as black and white as that.

Parker231 · 15/09/2020 20:08

Regardless of which spreadsheet you look at, too many people have died of and with Covid.

Namenic · 15/09/2020 21:21

I think the with Covid not of Covid is a bit of a misonomer. Often infection complicates other diseases - immuno-supporessed people on chemo, heart attack during infection. Death can have multiple causes which all contribute.

Not many other conditions would cause the rapid rise in excess deaths this year. And is it surprising that There was a spike in respiratory synptoms and people on ventilators? The time course looks like an infectious condition.

Aridane · 15/09/2020 21:37

@Friendsoftheearth

The link posted by @Byallmeans does work - many things dodgy about that poster perhaps but not the link she has posted.

However, it doesn’t support by what she is saying. It merely records covid deaths IN HOSPITAL and not in the community (and presumsbly not the massacre in the care homes aka “they would have died anyway”).

If you want to see the statistics for deaths in hospital, here is a functioning link - 3rd item linked. And a screen grab of what Minimising Poster was linking earlier

Do tell...

Byallmeans · 15/09/2020 21:44

And Aridane I suggested she take a look around - you’d have to be simple to not find the deaths tab. I C&P the link to hospital admissions because she was talking about hospital admissions..

Quite.

Many elderly care home patients didn’t even get tested when they died. It was just assumed. A GP didn’t even have to be brought in to ‘diagnose’ it. Many could have had illnesses that could have been given simple medication but they were left to die.

wasthataburp · 15/09/2020 21:53

I completely agree with the OP. I am not willing to accept this and I do not want my kids hearing about coronavirus all the time.

I am not willing to accept wearing a mask long term in public.

The country needs to get back to normal as the risks do not justify these restrictions we are living with. Time to get our lives back

This reminds me of HIV. People don’t die of HIV infection, which causes flu like symptoms for 2 weeks. They die a few years later because the virus then goes on to cause the collapse of their immune system. 35 million people dead. Let’s not be complacent this time.

Shock HIV is pretty much a death sentence for everyone - don’t take this piss. 80% of people infected with COVID have mild to no symptoms. I know people who had and didn’t even know they had it, people who felt like they had a really bad flu - but they are perfectly fine now. How dare you liken this to HIV. Unbelievable and sick!

sorry to be pedantic but you're totally incorrect About that.

No I’m right about it. Unless you take antiretroviral therapy for life - You’ve got about three years.
Sparticuscaticus · 15/09/2020 22:29

I haven't read all the latest posts on this thread but just wanted to say that OP was being goady and it's running and running. I've heard enough to make me realise how there are people that don't give a shit about those invulnerable in community that might struggle in a pandemic that could kill them,

It has been very sad for me as a disabled person, a mum of 3, who love and rely on me, to read how indispensable OP thinks I am to society - despite the fact I work in the field and am literally keeping your relatives alive!!- how invisible people with disabilities and serious health problems are. When it doesn't suit people like OP!

You know...
Your accountant, GP , nurse or whoever that may be disabled and getting on "just fine " but have a recent history of cancer, COPD serious asthma diabetes MS, MND PD or other degenerative but manageable condition, or whatever , because we count. too!! And maybe our children don't want us to get extremely ill or worse

I have never felt so invisible when people talk about old people dying, I don't want my 80 year old dad to die or anyone else!! I value everyone'.. And my 80 yo Dad is less high risk than me!!!
I'm in and out of A&E as it is and I just don't want people to take this lightly ...

My children ARE back at school we will deal with what we do but don't pretend they aren't fearful for their mum or catching something and passing it on. They have said all along how they were finding ways to keep going, are resilient and even though I have worried about them and we've found so many ways to keep
their lives social and busy (even if via video chat & SF meet ups) .., to Quote my daughter "yeah but it's better than death isn't it mum? Cos you will die or be worse when breathing cos i don't want that"

That's just wrong. In 2019 there were 38 million people living with HIV and 690,000 deaths from HIV (around 18%) It's very dangerous to pass off made up statements as fact.
