It has been six months and it's now very clear that covid won't be doing away in our lifetimes. A vaccine won't eradicate it (just as a vaccine didn't eradicate flu).

Most of you seem to be willing to accept social distancing and masks for the foreseeable. And I don't get it. We are a tribal species. We literally die without contact and get sick without communication. Kids are learning arrange, stilted ways of being that will just worsen their digital reliance. OCD is being normalised. Dating will be neurotic and masked. Freshers won't make new loves or lifelong friends like we did. As for their working lives...

I wouldn't mind catching covid (indeed I'm sure we all will sooner or later) so can someone explain to me what on earth is happening in their heads to tip the balance? If it only affected us, I could understand (well, I couldn't but this feels like child abuse on a giant scale).

Ariadne, pandemic refers to a disease which can be caught in multiple continents/countries. It does not refer to severity. Quarantine is not normally how a pandemic is dealt with - HIV is a pandemic, for example.

Aridane · 13/09/2020 14:44

I am well aware of what a pandemic is which is why I italicised it to distinguish from epidemic Confused

RedToothBrush · 13/09/2020 14:44

Oh go away.

Its boring.

Scbchl · 13/09/2020 14:45

I agree op

Flyonawalk · 13/09/2020 14:46

...and the word Quarantine does indeed come from ‘quarantena’ which means forty days is Italian. In Mediaeval Venice, ships had to be isolated for forty days before crew were allowed ashore. There was obviously great fear of Bubonic Plague, which had a fatality rate of 50-70%.

Happytobeme123 · 13/09/2020 14:49

@everythingisginandroses agreed! There's a poster slightly further up who is really suffering. I have made it back to work.
I dont like wearing a mask. Tough. I do it because I know that some people in a supermarket wouldn't survive it of they caught it.
Now I'm back st school, I've also started restricting my movement at the weekend. I wont go into my parents house. They're sad about the upcoming Christmas and I am too, but its better to keep people sade surely.
I hope you start to heal properly soon.

Whirlpoolsedge · 13/09/2020 14:51

I agree to an extent, I think if this carries on for years people will get fed up. But I’m happy to distance for the time being

Never read a post I disagree with so thoroughly. Utterly mystifying hogwash throughout.

Wow did you mean to be so rude? In which part?

I've not said whether I agree with lockdown or not, I've kept to the rules as stringently as anyone, but I also see people on here daily saying they've had a gutfull and will be ignoring new guidelines and I love in an area where many many people ignored lockdown throughout from March to July. They also got away with it on my street.
You cannot just make a statement like that and not back up or explain what you mean

everythingisginandroses · 13/09/2020 14:56

Thank you, @Happytobeme123 - wishing you a good recovery too Flowers My body has done a good job of healing, but wow, it took longer than I thought! I remember trying to change the bed and feeling like I'd attempted a 5k, and loading the dishwasher being an achievement!

WellRiddleMeThis · 13/09/2020 14:58

What an over reaction!

If it’s here to stay then it’s here to stay..

Flyonawalk · 13/09/2020 14:59

LadyoftheManners, you mention low infection rates being sensationalised. I agree the press are looking for shock headlines. The number of covid deaths is truly low in the UK at the moment (14 on 10th September, 6 on the 11th) so the media are shouting about infection rates as this sounds more alarming.

starpatch · 13/09/2020 15:00

I agree with you OP

Happytobeme123 · 13/09/2020 15:02

@everythingisginandroses Thank you. I smile at your dishwasher comment. Ditto for doing a wash load and hanging it on the line! Grin
I'd love to know if we're immune. Making the assumption not for now...
I hope you keep healthy.

endoftheworldaoife · 13/09/2020 15:04

@Happytobeme123 I care about reasons for living. For everyone not just me. If you told me that my options now are this forever or dying, I wouldn't pick to keep going. That's my personal view I know other people just want to keep breathing come what may. Which is fine but how can it be right to force some people to give up everything they value?

I don't think post viral fatigue is anything new. Existing is scary. Existing in a prison like society is worse.

@IncludeWomenInTheSequel I already posted my solution. To keep living a normal life. Covid simply isn't a reason for authoritarianism. I see people a lot but from Monday if I see two friends at once I'll be breaking the law.

(As for the person who asked where I came from there was a telegraph article about Halloween and covid so I came to look)

I can honestly see a civil war coming of this.

The more you post, OP, the more mentally unwell you sound.

WellRiddleMeThis · 13/09/2020 15:10

Christ Op where do you live? You make it sound like it’s not the UK.

Life goes on..... differently.

tiktokmakeaclock · 13/09/2020 15:11

end

You're minimising the reasons why this situation is likely to be temporary and catastrophising the difficulties in rather odd ways. I agree with others that you thinking is coming from quite a dark place.

Theworldisfullofgs · 13/09/2020 15:11

gypsy you are so right.

WellRiddleMeThis · 13/09/2020 15:11

Get a grip.... there’s no ‘ civil war’ coming!!!

Honestly,some people!!

sunglassesonthetable · 13/09/2020 15:12

So far OP you have got so many of your facts wrong.
Please don't worry about a civil war.

everythingisginandroses · 13/09/2020 15:12

Civil war? FFS, you are like one of those right-wing spooks from the 1970s, it figures that you read the Telegraph.

WellRiddleMeThis · 13/09/2020 15:13

It’s so troll like.... wind em up and watch em go!
