To enforce social distancing.

No doubt they will find many volunteers on Mumsnet!

Just listening to LBC right now, they will have no powers, (only lies with the police), they will be supplied and funded by Councils. But councils are not being given extra funding for these people either. Quelle Surprise!

Apparently they will be handing out hand sanitizer and face masks or something like that and reminding people of the rules, that's more or less it.

So back to pre "Authoritarian Marshals" and forget about a Police State. As you were.

They hysteria on this thread from SOME posters has been totally extraordinary.

@DurhamDurham

My next door neighbour will be in his element. He was timing us all when we went out for walks at the start of lockdown. He was trying to impose his own belief that we had to be back in an hour.
Where did this belief come from? I've come across a lot of people that genuinely believed it was the law at first. My own parents are still timing themselves when they go out for a walk! They know it's not law now, but think it must somehow be dangerous to go out for any longer 'or they wouldn't have made the rule in the first place' Confused They get annoyed that their neighbours aren't sticking to it as they're risking everyone's health, or something. There's no telling then otherwise.

@yolio

justasking111 Thanks, I get what you are saying, but the new crop of Covid inspectors should be recruited in enough numbers and with the powers to break up big gatherings. That is the source of the problem. No point in going into someone's house to break up a civilised gathering of 7 gathering at a distance from each other.

We'll see what happens.

The police can carry batons, tasers, are trained in self defence, they are in a different league and well trained.

Agree with you, I said this before it was confirmed that these people will have no powers apart from advising and reminding. See my post above.

Just seen this from the independent they can refer to the police for reinforcement, fines etc. Can just see our lot of police friends rolling their eyes at this. Having said it the majority will comply.

I don't know if it's the case here, but in Ireland the police said quite a while back that they're not enforcing social distancing any more, they don't consider it to be their job and they have better things to do. This covid marshal thing makes it seem like something similar has happened here - the police have told the government they can't be arsed to watch where people are standing and so Boris, in his infinite wisdom, has come up with yet another pointless sop to make people feel like something is being done.

justasking111 · 10/09/2020 15:28

@TheDailyCarbuncle we were talking about police here in Wales at lunch time, since the borders opened up and 5 mile rule was disbanded we have not seen a police car nor an officer on foot since. They have just disappeared from view. They did intimate to the welsh government that they were not here to enforce lockdown rules back then so do not suppose their views have changed. Although they did turn up in Birmingham the other weekend when there were raves going on.

RedToothBrush · 10/09/2020 15:29

Well

Sarah Calkin @sjcalkin (of the local government chronicle)
Just been told by @mhclg (ministry of housing, communities and local government) there will be no extra funding for the Covid secure marshals announced by the PM yesterday.
So of the headlines from yesterdays press conference one is not scientifically possible & another is something they would like skint councils to do for free

RedToothBrush · 10/09/2020 15:35

So, an idea that might play out well in terms of popularity of the headlines but its dead in many respect before its even begun because it doesn't appear theres any money to fund it.

cologne4711 · 10/09/2020 16:48

Where did this belief come from Michael Gove said it. For once I agreed with him!

cologne4711 · 10/09/2020 16:50

(but only at the height of lockdown - not now!)

I didn't think it very sensible for cyclists to be going out for 4 hour bike rides and I think it was instrumental in the Welsh and Scottish governments bringing in the 5 mile rule. Which was silly in itself. The virus doesn't know how far away from home you are.

PennyDreadfuI · 10/09/2020 16:53

@cologne4711

What he actually said was for most people, around an hour would be a reasonable amount of time for exercise. He didn't say people were only allowed out for an hour, but that's how a lot of people (mis)interpreted his words.
MaxNormal · 10/09/2020 16:59

is anyone over 50 dispensable

Why, does anyone over 50 have a 100% fatality rate?
And France and Spain haven't "done nothing", they are absolutely mask-tastic over there.

EvilPea · 10/09/2020 17:35

The police can’t do right for doing wrong, I’m not surprised they don’t want to be involved.

FelicisNox · 10/09/2020 17:42

You all need to get a grip.

If everyone did what they were supposed to be doing this wouldn't be necessary would it?

The government gave you all the option to do the right thing and as usual the British public do as they effing please and sod everyone else so this shit show is dragging out twice as long.

To answer a few idiotic comments:

  1. you are NOT more at risk in a care home or hospital, you are at risk wherever you are if you are at risk at all and the age group 50 and 60 with underlying health problems are the most at risk, not the elderly.

  2. marshalls will be nice normal folks being paid to a job the same as the rest of us so show some f*cking respect..... we all have bills to pay.

The British public did exactly what they were told to do - EOTHO (in their droves), go back to the office/school (and university too, in the next few weeks), go shopping to boost the economy, use public transport, go to the pub, get their nails done... All the stuff we were told it was ok to do. In fact, we were positively encouraged to do it all.

I'm so tired of the government telling us it's ok to do stuff, then blame us when it all goes tits up. What's even worse than the government doing it is when Joe Public decides to do so, too.

mchristopher · 10/09/2020 17:51

Totally agree with Lizzie Siddal. Suggesting a covid marshall is an example of a police state is very childish. This sort of attitude is what has turned this country into a laughing stock. Just do what you're told for a tiny section of your hopefully long life and stop having a tantrum every time someone asks you to do something for the good of society.

larrygrylls · 10/09/2020 18:09

I kind of get the impression that most people are 'bored with Corona' and want to imagine it has gone away. Well, it is not bored with us yet.

And there is zero point in having rules with no enforcement. A lot of people on here seem to want to be the 'exciting' exceptions who ignore the rules whilst quietly hoping that the 'boring' majority obey them, so they can keep on having fun.

If people have parties, the old and vulnerable will be confined to tiny bubbles, many of just one person, themselves. Is this what people really want?! In addition, many many middle aged school staff will be at risk if the virus is rife in the community.

A little bit of patience and respect is required.

honeybee88 · 10/09/2020 18:16

Ok so no thread has made me laugh more but also worry more. I dont answer my door to anyone so they would need to kick it down. I live alone with my children and unless I know you then you don t find my door open. What if this is all a hoax and its just to have an excuse to kill old people and make us a police state? Just saying.......funny how last year 10 000 people died of the flu but this year no one died of the flu.... There is a diffrence between dying OF C19 and dying WITH C19. But when I hear of someone having a heart attack and death cert said C19? Then what?? There will be no one at my house but my door will remain locked! This is all a game of money and politics where Bill Gates will earn more millions from vaccines and we wont know the side effects untill the next generation! We cant built up natural immunity as we are so used to sticking needles in our bodies to fight disease that when any virus comes along we drop dead like flies. I am now certain my friend had C19 at Chriatmas and she was very ill with 'flu' even althou she had had the flu vaccine. She had had lunch in London with friend just returned from north Italy! She came to see me but I didnt get it. I have never touched any vaccines in my life. I never get the flu and I am seldom ill. I suffer sinusitis occasionally but nothing major. The more we rely in vaccines the more vaccine we need.....are we going to get marshalls coming to make aurw we have them too? Watch the news and listen to how they arw trying to brainwash you with propaganda calling people anti vaxxers. Thank God I can think for myself.

larrygrylls · 10/09/2020 18:19

Honeybee,

We did brilliantly at building up natural immunity with small pox pre vaccination era!

BeijingBikini · 10/09/2020 18:24

the age group 50 and 60 with underlying health problems are the most at risk, not the elderly.

What? Have you looked at any death graphs from the ONS? CV deaths go exponentially upwards in age, vast majority of deaths are in over 85s.

HeresMe · 10/09/2020 18:36

*Just do what you're told for a tiny section of your hopefully long life and stop having a tantrum every time someone asks you to do something for the good of society."

So we aren't allowed to question if it is even good for society wow, we should just accept everything the government says wow just wow.
