To enforce social distancing.

No doubt they will find many volunteers on Mumsnet!

'Calm down'. Yep, the strawman appears. I'll never calm down when it comes to making civil liberties illegal.'

You say you've lived in a dictatorship previously, I wonder if some counselling may help as you are projecting massively.

There is a pandemic you see and to reduce further transmission social interaction needs limiting a bit. They really aren't all out to get you you know.

Foobydoo · 09/09/2020 21:24

@Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd

Do you mean our managed isolation facilities? These are all 4 and 5 star hotels. All people coming into NZ stay for 2 weeks. You are tested on day 3 and day 12. If negative you can leave. If positive you ad those you travel with are moved to another hotel.

That makes it alright then Hmm. And the NO exceptions part. Yeah, that's great.

I really don't see what is wrong with this. No one is forcing people to come in and out of the country.
SomewhereEast · 09/09/2020 21:27

Lets be honest here about the reality of Covid coppers (if we ever actually see them, which I doubt). First off the Tories will outsource this to Serco or some other bunch of incompetents run by their mates. The pay & recruitment process will be shit, so we're not going to get the best & brightest. The training will be piss poor & accountability & oversight will be pretty much absent I'm guessing. The resulting Covid Cops will almost certainly go for easy pickings - my guess is mithering some harmless looking lone woman about masks will somehow prove more important than dealing with the group of rough-as-fuck-looking young males getting drunk together in the park.
But hey it'll all be worth it Cos Covid.

Do you mind if I use this as part of my recruitment process ? Grin

SomewhereEast · 09/09/2020 21:32

Oh and don't tell me some of these trained-in-six-weeks wonders won't harbour the kind of conscious or unconscious biases which already bedevil policing - my guess is black or Polish people will magically turn out to be extra bad at social distancing when we see the who-gets-fined statistics Hmm

PseudoBadger · 09/09/2020 21:34

@EdithWeston

It would have to be the police who gave penalty notices, would it not?

I've seen too many people saying that they'll ignore the rules because no-one is enforcing them. This is indeed draconian, but it becaine necessary because of those who regularly took the piss, or just plain defied.

I expect they'll start by seeking cooperation, and breaking up large groups, reminding publicans and other business owners of their duties.

Looks like EHOs might also be involved (or did I mishear that?) in assessing whether premises are Covid secure - and presumably they'd use their existing powers to close business which pose a health risk until the business can demonstrate compliance

EHOs have been involved all along. It's just that Boris has only just heard of us.
SomewhereEast · 09/09/2020 21:34

@frumpety Go for it. How about "Pay, conditions and training are shit but you can take out all your inadequacies & resentments on random punters. So whats not to like?"

GetOffYourHighHorse · 09/09/2020 21:38

'my guess is black or Polish people will magically turn out to be extra bad at social distancing when we see the who-gets-fined statistics hmm'

You must be joking. Did you see all the BLM 'protests' that went ahead unchallenged in lockdown?

frumpety · 09/09/2020 21:40

starts taking notes When you say Polish, could all people of Eastern European descent be included ? or should my extensive training include some basic Geography/google map printouts ? It's just that I'm not sure most people can distinguish between the spoken languages of each individual Eastern European state, so it will be easier to lump them all together ? For training purposes only ?

lyralalala · 09/09/2020 21:46

@DurhamDurham

My next door neighbour will be in his element. He was timing us all when we went out for walks at the start of lockdown. He was trying to impose his own belief that we had to be back in an hour.
I wonder if you live near me.

Mine stationed himself at the entrance to the park making notes and reporting people constantly until he was told off by the community bobby.

He also reported my house for "large gatherings" numerous times until the same community bobby told him off again. He genuinely thought my MIL would have to move out of our house to make it legal.

He almost combusted when SIL's kids moved in in March (they stayed until July). The conflict on his face when it was pointed out to him that she'd sent her kids to us because she was working in ICU in a hospital with a lot of Covid patients was highly amusing to see.
@Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd
Civil liberties can't be illegal by definition!
What about civil responsibility?
By making certain social behaviours, you criminalise them. Red put it far better than I ever could, because as Red correctly put it, it's about enforcing social behaviour by law.

Astute and spot on post, Red, but falling on deaf ears.

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 09/09/2020 21:49

Sorry, I meant, by making certain social behaviours illegal.

frumpety · 09/09/2020 21:50

@SomewhereEast will PM you if any consultancy positions become available Grin

if you're power-mad thicko that loves snooping on people but couldn't get a job as a community support officer or a parking warden then here's the opening you've been waiting for!

SomewhereEast · 09/09/2020 21:52

@frumpety Don't worry! You just need to recruit from our local Facebook group, which is full of blokes who can accurate identify an alleged criminal's accent as Polish despite never having ventured more than five miles from Hull in their entire lives.

On an even lighter note, I am DYING to see the Covid Coppers go into action in some of the less naice parts of Hull...

Alabamawhirly1 · 09/09/2020 21:52

I'm much more scared of what the government are doing and the amount of control they are able to excert over our lives than I have ever been of covid - a virus that for the vast majority is so mild, you have to be tested to know if you have it.

How can the government tell me my mum and dad can't visit me at my home that I own, that is my property. How can that be legal.

These so called marshalls will be little men on power trips. Fining granny's for chatting outside the post office or kids playing in the park.

Nicedayforawedding · 09/09/2020 21:53

They are going to the pubs and restaurants

Sounds ok to me, something needs to be done to stop cases spiralling

DH survived a few years working for the DSS on Bransholme.

Firef1y72 · 09/09/2020 21:58

@Nestme

Well if we must have marshals please let them have powers to force all the attention seeking twits that "can't wear a mask because I am claustrophobic" to put them on or carry a lanyard or medical exception card that explains how they have a real physical or psychological reason not to wear one, rather than the scores of women I know who do neither.
Would you like me to wear a yellow star as well while I'm at it?

Seriously I am actually scared that I am now going to have to wear my lanyard in case one of these marshals decides to confront me. Should I really have to display my "otherness" to the world, when the one saving grace of my autism being an invisible disability is that it is invisible and in normal circumstances I dont need to let every Tom Dick and Harry know i have it.

Now I find I have to tell every bus driver, countless shop assistants and the random who confront me, because apparently I don't look autistic. (Not sure what autistic looks like but its not me). I stick to the rules, I have to, its part of who I am, but those same rules (and other people not following them) are constantly pushing me in to meltdown, then having the comments and looks pushes me further. If I wasnin constant fear of being confronted by someone in uniform, then I would most likely be in absolute meltdown (which you really don't want to see) on a very regular basis.

Jaxhog · 09/09/2020 21:58

The most likely place for a vulnerable person has always been in hospital

What world do you live in? Very few vulnerable people are in a hospital!

MadameBlobby · 09/09/2020 22:02

They’ll fuck it up anyway. If it was actually going to become a thing it would be sinister but it’ll go the same way as all their other marvellous plans.

Eng123 · 09/09/2020 22:03

@Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd
The limitations are only being transposed into law as people didn't observe their responsibilities. I'm more annoyed that idiots removed; my rights to live and work in 27 other countries, common environmental standards and a right to appeal to an impartial body - to name just a few!

'you're power-mad thicko that loves snooping on people but couldn't get a job as a community support officer or a parking warden then here's the opening you've been waiting for!'

What an awful sneery way to talk about people on a low wage. I'm sure they won't just be storming around telling people off. You never know they may be helpful, so many seem to struggle with the most simplest of instructions they could be a wealth of info.
