Im listening to LBC radio and they have just said there will be a live government announcement on LBC at 10.30 tonight that will affect households. I am confused why would this be on LBC at that time, if they know the announcement they are going to make, why not make it earlier?

@greengreengrass14 It’ll be passed under the Covid emergency legislation, that’s how it can become law so quickly.

SheepandCow · 08/09/2020 22:49

@Reddog1

And yet ..... forcing people to go to work because of pressure from city centre property owners (it’s not to save Pret, it’s to mollify the real estate crew). Thankfully, sensible employers are resisting.
The real estate crew will be just fine. If they can't get commercial rent, they'll just convert to residential (on the cheap to a poor standard).

No need to worry about the owners of Pret either. They're financially set for life. The many thousands of employees aren't so lucky of course. Nor are the hundreds of thousands of office related industries - facilities, maintenance, transport etc. The huge tax increase required to cover the mass redundancies including the social costs won't be so fun either.

Yes some super rich CEOs seem keen on a short-sighted skimping on office space costs. We can but hope the majority have enough foresight to realise the longer-term negative consequences to the economy and society.

Possibly done now, with a few days to go, to allow one last hurrah before autumn prudence has to kick in.

It was always the case of make the most of the hot (low transmission) late summer, before we have to be much much more careful in the winter virus season (the time when NHS is overstretched anyhow, so adding even a small Covid wave is going to be really rather crap)

Fyzz · 08/09/2020 22:49

Team sports seems to be a source of infection spread, lots of cases where virus runs through a team, lots of footballers infected. Seems like a very obvious area to shut down.

CormoranStrike · 08/09/2020 22:49

My son is a scout leader. Reckons that’s them back on red light footing and won’t be able to meet.

LesLavandes · 08/09/2020 22:49

Lovenote. As I said - shut up

Viviennemary · 08/09/2020 22:49

It would be nice to know what last week's rules were. Never mind next week's. What a fiasco.

sirfredfredgeorge · 08/09/2020 22:49

*My outdoor fitness group just started back today. The coaches were working on the instruction of up to 30 in an outdoor setting, maintaining a social distance.

Will this not be allowed now??*

It will depend on the exact details of the law, sports working under the DCMS frameworks they've agreed currently do not have the 30 person limit, so that your club was working only on that basis, suggests it might not be legal I'd say.

YummyJamDoughnut · 08/09/2020 22:49

@tillyandmilly

blimey you lot go to bed early!
I've been at work since 5am- finished at 6.30-pm! Been up since 4, so I'm knackered My 9-5 days were so much easier.
ineedaholidaynow · 08/09/2020 22:50

The virus won't be in a school unless someone brings it in, the majority of children with the virus at the moment that are causing bubbles to burst in schools are from children brining it in, probably from parties and mixing households

cantkeepawayforever · 08/09/2020 22:50

@ithinkiveseenthisfilmbefore

6 is ridiculous at this point, especially for school kids. If they can have 30 in their class at primary school, why can't they meet up with their friends outside of school?

If they can have bubbles of 2-300 at secondary, why can't they meet up outside of school?

I sense a revolt coming...

Because, overall, there is a risk 'bank balance'. By meeting as 30 in school (essential), a big withdrawal is made. So taking on further risks is not allowed, as it means tipping the whole thing into overdraft.

I don't know why the messaging around this isn't clearer, as the concept is very simple.

lyralalala · 08/09/2020 22:50

I wonder how long it will be before the one local busybody who just doesn't get it reports me for having too many people in my house again.

No visitors at all for us now as we are a household of more than 6.

monsterad · 08/09/2020 22:50

@PinkMacaron

Do children count towards the six as one whole person? Or are they 0.5 of a person?

What about me and DH? In many ways two became one when we got married.

I think this is a joke, but I'm sure people actually think like this
SallySeven · 08/09/2020 22:51

Woodlands there are at least no assemblies in our school.

CostaCosta · 08/09/2020 22:51

If my family (4) meets with my parents (2) can we then still, separately meet with my in-laws another time?

LastTrainEast · 08/09/2020 22:51

It's hardly surprising if the numbers go up. I was just reading about people arranging meetings in large groups and hugging strangers. Apparently to defy the government because they don't believe the virus is real.

LoveNote · 08/09/2020 22:51

@LesLavandes

Lovenote. As I said - shut up
er, no! I won't "shut up" love
LesLavandes · 08/09/2020 22:51

Well. Let's just try to follow this week's rules. They are sure to be plastered all over internet and on news bulletins now

DelphiniumBlue · 08/09/2020 22:51

@Lougle

BBC has just said the announcement will be tomorrow.
Wait, they are announcing tomorrow morning, but have already said tonight....This is bordering on farce. So I can go to school and work in different year group bubbles over the day, but can't celebrate my niece 's birthday next week because 4 of us plus 3 of them =7? Everyone is being urged to return to their workplaces, travelling on public transport that still isn't running at full capacity. Boris and his henchmen can't even make an announcement on their own timetable, but " say "it anyway. What's the problem, have they not worked out the details yet? Why announce you're going to make an announcement, announce it, then say it's not the full announcement, which will be announced more fully tomorrow??? What an embarrassing shitshow!
MJMG2015 · 08/09/2020 22:52

@TheNewLook

My outdoor fitness group just started back today. The coaches were working on the instruction of up to 30 in an outdoor setting, maintaining a social distance.

Will this not be allowed now??

Depends whether they can squeeze it in under the organised sport exemption. I suppose

Why such ig groups anyway?

Lazt · 08/09/2020 22:52

Of course it’ll be fine if you break this law in a limited and specific way

shinynewapple2020 · 08/09/2020 22:52

@Littlefiendsusan

How does this work when my dd's birthday party consists of the children in her school-year bubble 🤔

I think the idea is that the children coming together in the bubble for their education is necessary, but the party isn't .

Better bring it forward to this weekend !

meditrina · 08/09/2020 22:52

@greengreengrass14

changing the law doesn't happen that easily. Unless we live in a fascist dictatorship, which we don't Cut me some slack mumsnetters I'm tired sorry.

Law needs to go through parliament unless we are in state of emergency and total fascism.
which we are not YET>

Law was passed on 25 March

www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2020/7/contents/enacted

Section 22 covers powers to restrict gatherings

MarshaBradyo · 08/09/2020 22:52

@TheSeedsOfADream

Here is a blow dried mango stone that looks like Boris. I'm sending it to London to run the country. Is that OK with everyone?
Brilliant just like him

Completely missed all this but six rang a bell from before

AlecTrevelyan006 · 08/09/2020 22:52

@LastTrainEast

"99% false positives" is that directly from an expert on youtube?
Maths.

The specificity of the PCR test is at best 99.5%. So 0.5% of tests will produce false positives.

However, 0.05% of the population have SARS-CoV-2 according to the ONS survey.

If you test asymptomatic people, the number with the virus should accord with the number in the general population.

So if you test 100,000 people:

50 actually have the virus (100,000*0.0005)

500 return false positives (100,000*0.005)

The chances of actually having the virus if you test positive are 9% (50/550).

91% are false positives.

The test is fked, which is why the Govt just changed the guidance to require two tests before anyone is confirmed positive. Something the press have completely ignored.
