Government announcement at 10.30 tonight

Im listening to LBC radio and they have just said there will be a live government announcement on LBC at 10.30 tonight that will affect households. I am confused why would this be on LBC at that time, if they know the announcement they are going to make, why not make it earlier?

6 is ridiculous at this point, especially for school kids. If they can have 30 in their class at primary school, why can't they meet up with their friends outside of school?

If they can have bubbles of 2-300 at secondary, why can't they meet up outside of school?

I sense a revolt coming...

monsterad · 08/09/2020 22:46

@irregularegular

But I can be squeezed into a classroom with 30 children and no mask! hmm

The more restrictions are imposed (and the more people follow them) outside the classroom, the safer it will be for you inside the classroom.

Yes, again, agreed

@Littlefiendsusan

How does this work when my dd's birthday party consists of the children in her school-year bubble 🤔
I think the bubble notion is school based only. You can only have a group of 6 everywhere else, including adults
LangClegsInSpace · 08/09/2020 22:46

How dare they do this while testing, contact tracing and support for isolation is such a shitshow? They should sort out out their own responsibilities before restricting public freedoms any further.

Fuck you Boris and the rest of your shower.

Put me down for a vote for the mango stone.

tillyandmilly · 08/09/2020 22:46

blimey you lot go to bed early!

TheNewLook · 08/09/2020 22:46

My outdoor fitness group just started back today. The coaches were working on the instruction of up to 30 in an outdoor setting, maintaining a social distance.

Will this not be allowed now??

Er, you can't have a birthday party in that format (and nor should you have been anyway). It's simple.
ithinkiveseenthisfilmbefore · 08/09/2020 22:46

Sports etc will be allowed if covid precautions are being taken.

Don't see how that works in football, tbh.

The whole thing is ridiculous at this point.

Iwishiwasawizard · 08/09/2020 22:46

I think they were likely worried about Freshers week and all the house parties that come with it, seems like the timing is in conjunction with that

Because each time they're exposed it's a risk. Cut down the exposures, cut down the risk.

It's so obvious

greengreengrass14 · 08/09/2020 22:47

changing the law doesn't happen that easily.
Unless we live in a fascist dictatorship, which we don't
Cut me some slack mumsnetters I'm tired sorry.

Law needs to go through parliament unless we are in state of emergency and total fascism.
which we are not YET>

cantkeepawayforever · 08/09/2020 22:47

The way i read it is that there is no change for those who have followed current guidance.

However, the anomaly that there was a limit of 6 in guidance but 30 in law has (sensibly) been removed to allow enforcement if needed.

Essentially, we have 'overspent' on our risk 'bank account', and with further big 'risk bills' rolling in (schools, universities, an accompanying return to work), being able to enforce the existing guidance on keeping the risk expenditure low in other areas seems sensible.

Not popular, of course. But not stupid.

MJMG2015 · 08/09/2020 22:47

@Jenasaurus

How will this impact sports like football etc is that something that is likely to be excempt
Organised sport is exempt.

Big surprise
NOT

TinkersTailor · 08/09/2020 22:47

It just gets worse by the minute.

I thought we couldn't have gatherings of more than 6 anyway?
How do they justify sending all those kids off to uni? Coming from different households to live in one flat/house seems a disaster to me.

It's a very slippery slope back to full lockdown now. DD had her first settling in session at school today (meant to start full time on Friday) I'll be surprised if she gets at least one full day at school.

I saw Matt Hancock had come out to say that groups of 20/30 year olds socialising is the reason that the numbers had risen. Nothing to do with your fucking useless governments eat out to help out scheme then, no? Infuriating.

LastTrainEast · 08/09/2020 22:47

"99% false positives" is that directly from an expert on youtube?

ineedaholidaynow · 08/09/2020 22:47

@Littlefiendsusan if there are more than 6 people at the party it will be illegal. Parties are nice but not essential, school is essential

BrokenBrit · 08/09/2020 22:47

Not clear at all on how this will affect clubs and sports, for example yoga classes and dancing.

LoveNote · 08/09/2020 22:47

kids meeting after school bring along parents, siblings etc etc whom don't go into classrooms

notevenat20 · 08/09/2020 22:47

It's not bonkers. The purpose of greater restrictions elsewhere is to allow schools to stay open (among other things). Or at least it should be. Personally I think we should have kept pubs etc. closed to keep schools open for all kids.

I agree completely. Thank you for saying it.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 08/09/2020 22:47

Words just can’t describe this government.

There was a picture on Facebook a few days ago, it said if the prime minister said you won’t catch COVID If you stick your fingers up your a**e, what would happen.

I suspect a lot of smelly fingers

SallySeven · 08/09/2020 22:47

I have to admire the gall of the political elite that says UK manufacturing must always be allowed to shut down if it can't compete but city centre landlords' needs should be centered during an (essentially) airborne pandemic.

sirfredfredgeorge · 08/09/2020 22:47

*Looking at the BBC link, I think I'm better off than I was before?

I live on my own. I have no support bubble.

Before tonight, I could meet up to 5 other people outside from up to 5 other households but could only meet 1 person inside (or more than one if they were the same household).

Now it looks like I can meet up to 5 other people inside? Handy if it's true because it's getting chilly seeing friends now!*

No, before you could've met 29 other people from 29 other households, the exact nature of the law change is not yet known, but it seems to be closer to the guidance - ie no different to what you thought were the rules.

PinkMacaron · 08/09/2020 22:48

Do children count towards the six as one whole person? Or are they 0.5 of a person?

What about me and DH? In many ways two became one when we got married.

TheNewLook · 08/09/2020 22:48

I think it depends on the nature of the party. My daughter is attending one this weekend involving 15 children but they will be doing the particular activity in groups of 5 and not really mixing with the other groups.

windyautumn · 08/09/2020 22:48

I think they could do with being really clear about the motives. Reducing social contacts in social settings / homes to protect the essentials of workplaces and schools. Without the rationale it just sounds a bit bonkers (big bubbles vs 6 at home) but if it's like a exposure budget, it makes sense.
