Another country added. I really do think foreign travels a bad idea until this crap is over.

Hope those in France can get back easily

I'm only surprised it took as long as it did. It starts from Saturday so I imagine there will be a mad scramble to get back.

tapdancingmum · 13/08/2020 22:18

What I don't understand is why they give a couple of days notice. Surely if you're there and you come back tomorrow your exposure risk has been just as high as those coming back on Sunday?

ureterr1blemuriel · 13/08/2020 22:18

It starts from 4am Sunday so over 48 hours away - it’ll be crazy on the Eurotunnel!

Eccle80 · 13/08/2020 22:21

It is 4am Saturday I think, and affects the Netherlands and Malta too. We were meant to be going to the Netherlands tomorrow but thankfully decided a couple of months ago to postpone till next year

palindromeam · 13/08/2020 22:23

I am feeling peevish.

I am looking forward to some people I know being surprised at this and moanjng how inconvenient it is.

baterwaiter · 13/08/2020 22:26

Ryanair will no doubt keep on flying and pocketing the hard earned cash of people who can’t quarantine. My friend lost £1500 due to this.

Friendsoftheearth · 13/08/2020 22:34

Worth noting that insurance is invalidated now, as it is all but essential travel, please check your policies if you are there, and consider if you need extra cover or to return home. Saturday 4am is the deadline for the quarantine - FCO guidelines are separate.

FCO hasn't advised those in France to come home. Insurance covers you if you're already there, until you get home.

Does anyone know if those leaving France Friday evening arriving 6am Saturday morning (overnight ferry) are exempt or included? Asking for a friend (well sister actually!) Confused

The cut off is 4am Saturday so I would assume they'd need to quarantine unfortunately
ineedaholidaynow · 13/08/2020 22:47

Insurance covers you if you are already in France, but if you haven't started the journey there eg on plane, ferry then your insurance might not cover you once FCO advice changes .

Firefliess · 13/08/2020 22:47

I thought they'd do it in the next few days - a awful lot of Brits on holiday in France including lots of teachers. People are nervous of flying but self drive is up apparently. And France is the obvious place to see you've to. They don't want schools to fail to open because teachers are self isolating. They've timed it for just after the Scottish schools returned (so those teachers already back) but still 3 weeks before English term starts. They've got a week to finish off their holiday and get home, plus two weeks to isolate.

Firefliess · 13/08/2020 22:49

With an overnight ferry that at arrives at 6am you'd be in British waters by 4am surely? (Though I have no idea whether that actually counts!)

StitchInLime · 13/08/2020 22:54

Is it likely Qs will be crazy getting to and on ferries and Eurotunnel? Know people due to leave tomorrow morning with a 10 hour drive through France to then get on Eurotunnel or ferry (pre booked, just can't remember which one) and wondering if they'll make it in time with all the likely Qs?

MotherofKitties · 13/08/2020 22:54

Out of curiosity and because I can't find anything definitive online, does anyone know how or if the quarantine period is going to be enforced by the U.K. with French nationals/people who live in France travelling to the U.K.?

As in, is the government going down an Australian route of making people stay in government approved hotels/buildings for 14 days to ensure quarantine? Or just trust people to quarantine somewhere once they get here?

They'll just have to provide an address they're staying at, same as UK nationals.
MotherofKitties · 13/08/2020 22:58

Thanks @snowballer

Housemum · 13/08/2020 22:59

I kind of expected this, but gutted that we were 18 hours away from going on holiday :(
Obviously we can't go as FCO have issued advice, just need to get on the phone to the insurance company to get our money back (we booked last year and had insurance since then so no worry of Covid restrictions). Shame, we were going from one low - Covid area to another (rural France, middle of nowhere, been there before).

99victoria · 13/08/2020 23:09

My son is getting married in France in 5 weeks time. It was all booked last September including our flights etc. They procrastinated for months about whether to cancel and finally decided when the quarantine was lifted in July, that they would go ahead. Now it's all gone Pete Tong again.

We'll be going anyway. We'll get some new insurance to cover us and we'll do the 2 week quarantine. We're going to an area of France where cases are still quite low so I'm not missing my son's wedding. Bloody sick of the whole thing - que sera sera

brittanyfairies · 13/08/2020 23:21

I live in France and my family were due to fly out tomorrow morning. It's all cancelled now. I haven't seen them since this time last year. I'm gutted

IncrediblySadToo · 13/08/2020 23:33

I wonder what percentage of those who should be quarantining on return actually are?

MrsFogi · 13/08/2020 23:34

I am a bit lost here - if you are okay about quarantining on your return to the UK I take it you can still travel to France?

pontypridd · 13/08/2020 23:36

@99victoria what new insurance can you get to go to France now?

We're Ok with quarantining too - it's just the not being insured thing that worries us. Is there really an insurance company that would cover this now?

ineedaholidaynow · 13/08/2020 23:38

Battleface insurance appears to cover non essential travel against FCO advice
