Another country added. I really do think foreign travels a bad idea until this crap is over.

Hope those in France can get back easily

Will travel insurance pay out if you can't go because of the quarantine period (even if you booked in 2019, pre covid)?

Won't insurance firms argue that the holiday is still available, so tough?

It is quite confusing.

GabsAlot · 13/08/2020 23:44

i dont know why people are so shocked -it happend to spain numbers were rising all over and people still think this is over

if ubooked ages ago fair enough anyone else is stupid

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 13/08/2020 23:47

I booked August 2019. My holiday country is one of the 16 mentioned as possibly being next up for quarantine so I'd like to understand the insurance position.

CKBJ · 13/08/2020 23:50

Numbers have been rising in France so shouldn’t come as a surprise after Spain. What I don’t get is why wait to Saturday?Surely if you come back tomorrow you are at the same risk as if you come back Sunday?Likewise if you came back today, yesterday etc a similar risk too?

We can't use Battleface as my husband is 60 and they will only insure up to aged 59 but I have found a couple of other insurance companies who will cover against FCO advice - Campbell Irvine and Versatile Insurance. We don't need to be covered for anything Covid related - we're only going for 4 days so if we're well when we leave we won't get ill enough in 4 days to need any treatment. We have our EHIC cards too.

Going forward I feel mainstream insurance companies are going to have to look at changing their policies to include Covid and FCO advice changing. This uncertainty will probably go on for a long time and the insurance companies refuse to cover people then they will just lose business to the ones who will!

manicinsomniac · 13/08/2020 23:53

I know someone who went to Portugal a couple of weeks ago. She got ill while over there (not Covid) and required a visit to hospital for a rehydration drip or something. She said it was all covered by the EHIC and it wasn't a problem that she had no other insurance.

Not something I would have wanted to do though!

She also went for a Covid test on her return and, once she got her negative result, did not quarantine strictly Hmm (ie she went for walks and to the supermarket)

ineedaholidaynow · 13/08/2020 23:58

Insurance premiums are just going to go up

pontypridd · 14/08/2020 00:02

Thank you 99victoria.

@MRex we're flying

And you're a nice person, aren't you

GabsAlot · 14/08/2020 00:07

thats ok then you wont infect anyone on a plane will you

ohthegoats · 14/08/2020 00:08

EU health card covers it, yes?

EasterIssland · 14/08/2020 00:10

Thanks to those that have said about which insurances cover when fco goes against it. Spanish here who has have to cancel 2 trips to visit friends and family already. I’ve another one in Xmas ... depending how this continues I might need to consider checking for Insurances that would cover it.

Wtfdidwedo · 14/08/2020 00:14

@tapdancingmum

What I don't understand is why they give a couple of days notice. Surely if you're there and you come back tomorrow your exposure risk has been just as high as those coming back on Sunday?
Probably bbecause last time they announced a need to quarantine with barely any notice the news channels were full of sad faced Brits on cheap breaks to the Costas whining about having no notice.
pontypridd · 14/08/2020 00:15

John Keefe, UK director of public affairs for Eurotunnel has just been on Newsnight saying that he expects many people to continue traveling to France in the coming weeks and is not concerned about losing revenue - he is aware of many people that are not concerned about quarantining when returning to the UK.

MRex · 14/08/2020 00:16

@99victoria - actually I was giving you the benefit of the doubt that you must be driving. So there's been information about this pandemic since last year, lockdown from March, nearly 21 million known unwell, 750k known dead around the world, well aware you'd be breaking French law, well aware you would be lying to the airline. But your plan A is to both get on a plane infected with covid and infect whoever gets in your path, never mind the outcome for them, because the insurance is cheaper. Wow.

Oh, but it's not "nice" to point out your stupidity.

manicinsomniac · 14/08/2020 00:16

99Victoria Surely you wouldn't consider getting on a plane knowing you were symptomatic, would you?!? You''d have to be prepared to recover in France. At least until the infectious period was over (I don't know how long that is - 10 days?)

ineedaholidaynow · 14/08/2020 00:18

EU health card covers what?

Travel insurance covers things like if you have an accident abroad and need special help on the plane coming home, also covers worst case scenario of someone dying abroad and repatriation of the body (which isn’t cheap). Will also cover if you need to spend extra time abroad if you get ill so need to stay in hotel, change your flight etc.

Your EU health card doesn’t cover any of the above.

SexTrainGlue · 14/08/2020 00:25

France might impose quarantine of arrivals from Britain, so your 4 day trip had better be rebooked as as 18 day one

And no you really mustn't get on a plane if you have any symptoms

RoseAndRose · 14/08/2020 00:28

EHICs cease being valid for Britons at the end of the year, don't they?

pontypridd · 14/08/2020 00:28

What are you all talking about?

You've all gone mad.

There is no law to say that people can't go to France now. They just have to quarantine when they get back and that is their choice - same as it's your choice whether you go to the cinema, to a friend's house or restaurant etc here in England. The difference is you don't have to quarantine to do the latter. The similarity is that you could pick up Covid and spread it whether in France or the UK.

ineedaholidaynow · 14/08/2020 00:31

You can still go but you must ensure you have valid travel insurance because as soon as FCO advice changes most travel insurance policies become invalid (doesn’t matter if it covers COVID that is a separate issue)

HandsOffMyRights · 14/08/2020 00:32

@IncrediblySadToo

I wonder what percentage of those who should be quarantining on return actually are?
I've already heard of somebody who won't bother as "nobody will police it."
pontypridd · 14/08/2020 00:32

99victoria has listed insurance companies that cover despite FCO advice - above.
