Another country added. I really do think foreign travels a bad idea until this crap is over.

Hope those in France can get back easily

Why do they give notice ? Would be better to start immediately. Now we will have totally packed trains and ferries as people scramble to get home, increasing transmission risk, and those people won’t quarantine. It seems incredibly stupid. If you need to add a country to the list then you need to add it, not add in a few days time.

I don’t understand why they give notice about the quarantine. All that causes is more people who may have been exposed to rush back to the UK. I agree with the way they did the Spain announcement - I say that as someone who was literally heading out of the door to catch a flight when the announcement was made. We didn’t go because work would not have been understanding given that the quarantine was in place before we left.

We ended up going to Greece, and would have quarantined properly had it been announced while we were out there. I think anyone who goes away at the moment has to understand that the situation could change while they’re away.

We had a great holiday and it felt so much safer than the UK - the beaches were really quiet. Most things at the hotel were done outside and social distancing was followed in the restaurant. On our outward journey, our QR codes to check where we had travelled from were checked on departure, on arrival at the Greek airport and our hotel. They weren’t even looked at on our return to the UK - assuming there’s not some high tech way that it is linked to your passport so they can flag if you’ve not done it, it would have been quite easy to just slip through without providing details of where you’d be quarantining if necessary.

I don’t know where / when you flew back to the UK but I can assure you the form was checked at passport control at LHR yesterday. The border control officer remarked to us that we were lucky to be back before quarantine (we weren’t rushing back, we were just booked to come home yesterday anyway).
voxnihili · 15/08/2020 06:37

We flew into LGW yesterday. There were some officers before you joined the queue for passport control asking if you’d filled it in but they didn’t actually check - just took your word for it. Lots of peoples were filling it in before joining the queue as there were instructions of what to do if you hadn’t.

Wow i’m surprised it’s so different at LGW. Definitely checked at LHR! Signs to say not to progress into queue without completing it etc

If it's a 100% check then that must be a very recent change.

It's certainly been possible to enter at LHR without a check of PLF or an obvious check of the QR code over the last few weeks/months.

It was certainly a 100% check of those going through passport control yesterday (we were there a while!). I had my DD on my form and and my husband was on a separate form and they checked the details, took both our phones to check the form etc, while checking our passports.
ImAncient · 15/08/2020 08:22

Neighbours flew into Luton from Spain & didn’t even fill the forms in & no one was checking whether they had.

Personally I don’t think you should be allowed to board if you not completed the forms.

wintertravel1980 · 15/08/2020 09:50

We flew in via LHR in early August (i.e. not so recently) and it was a 100% check at the passport control.

Peanutbutterchomp · 15/08/2020 10:57

We’re out of quarantine now, but when we flew into Edinburgh there was no one checking anything- we went through the automatic machines at immigration and didn’t even speak to any immigration official in person.

There were no random checks via phone or text to check we were at home - nothing at all.

We do, however, have our very own ever vigilant watch neighbour who shouted at me and DD a few days in when I was taking her to an emergency orthodontist appointment (orthodontist told us to come in and to not attempt to fix it ourselves). That was me told. Wouldn’t have minded so much except she was standing on her doorstep chatting to another parent no more than a couple of feet apart, no attempt at social distancing. Hmm

Friendsoftheearth · 15/08/2020 13:29

disorganised I think many post on social media so the neighbours are not needed as such, as friends, family and work etc will know where they have been, and I guess if they are not doing the right thing by quarantining themselves, school, office etc will soon let them not to come in, take action etc.

misschoices · 15/08/2020 13:48

I think they're banning travel for political reasons - such as wanting us to only travel domestically to pump money in our economy.

This is bonkers to me! I want to go to Spain!

Friendsoftheearth · 15/08/2020 14:27

Really? So you think the SNP who pushed to ban France before the gov wanted to is doing it for 'political reasons'??? Really? Given their political ambition is to become independent and rejoin the EU.

This has nothing to do with politics, and everything to do with the rocketing infection rate.

The last thing any government wants to do is sink it is own travel and airline industry.

The UK hotel industry is already completely full anyway, so where is the benefit exactly?! I would strongly recommend you look at the actual statistics and base your views on that. If France and Spain's levels were low I would agree with you, but they are not, they are really bad!

UK; 18 cases per 100,000
SpainL 100 cases per 100,000

Can you see the difference now?

RunningNinja79 · 15/08/2020 16:04

So I've seen a couple of times on this thread about quarantine in France. Where is the link to this please? I have not seen it anywhere else and it is something we are looking at. I'm fully expecting it, but as far as I can see nothing has been announced by 4PM today (the time I'm writing this as I know it will be announced after and then loads of people will jump on me for not seeing it)

MRex · 15/08/2020 16:11

Clement Baume announced it would happen, but as far as I can see the official quarantine requirement isn't in place yet. Maybe it'll be announced on Monday. Here's a link to a quote:

RunningNinja79 · 15/08/2020 16:14

Thank you @MRex

So just been threatened. Fully expected it to happen, just like the quarantine in the UK when coming from France.

Friendsoftheearth · 15/08/2020 17:20

The only difference being that UK is well under the 20 cases per 100,000 so there is no real reason at the moment for France to instruct a quarantine from travellers from the UK running France's stats are nearly double that of the UK, so I hope we can avoid the tit for tat escalation, which will be childish given the problems we all face dealing with covid. Wanting to avoid widespread imported infection should not be seen as a personal slight to France or others but a safety measure that should be an option for all countries to take.
