Another country added. I really do think foreign travels a bad idea until this crap is over.

Hope those in France can get back easily

I know @pontypridd but you need the correct cover, many people probably don’t realise their insurance has suddenly become invalid

pontypridd · 14/08/2020 00:38

That may be true. But 99victoria gave names of insurance companies that can provide the right cover in place of those that can't.

ohthegoats · 14/08/2020 00:38

I understand travel insurance. EHIC would cover being sick in the EU, and 4 days travel won't take until 31st Dec.

MRex · 14/08/2020 00:44

@pontypridd - it doesn't matter what her insurance says about health cover, she's been very clear that the plan if they get unwell with covid in France is to catch a flight home at the end of their 4 days as planned. While knowingly symptomatic and infectious.

pontypridd · 14/08/2020 00:56

@MRex - how can that be her plan? She doesn't know that she'll get covid in France - so how can she plan to fly home with it after the 4 days?

And I thought 99victoria said she wasn't going to fly anyway?

MrsKingfisher · 14/08/2020 00:56

How does the government expect to enforce this properly? Friend of mine came back from Spain the day after the quarantine announcement she did quarantine and had one phone call to ask her if she was at the address stated on her form.

Unless they can enforce it how many people will just carry on regardless?

pontypridd · 14/08/2020 00:58

People will and are carrying on regardless.

The government know this.

The whole thing is a publicity stunt to make them look as if they are being a tiny bit vigilant. And that is all.

MRex · 14/08/2020 01:02

@Pontypridd - she said "we're only going for 4 days so if we're well when we leave we won't get ill enough in 4 days to need any treatment". If infected, the only way they can be sure they will "not get ill enough in 4 days" to need the insurance is if they return while infected.

Sweettea1 · 14/08/2020 01:18

they can get back just have to stay home once arrived

bottlenose301 · 14/08/2020 02:35

I have been in France and was scheduled to return at the weekend. However I had to change the flight today and I'm back now. I have been isolating in France with family who live there up a hill in the middle of nowhere but I'm understand the actual travel is the worry.
It just shows how quickly things can change. Look at Malta, barely any cases in July and now sky high.
Probably a mistake for people to book and I did worry about something like this happening but it'd kinda the risk you take.
I won't be going anywhere again now for ages, the last few days have been stressful and uncertain and really hit home what travellers are facing. It's just not worth it.
Sorry to those trying to her there or home x

CourseTheyWere · 14/08/2020 06:10

I think that it’s now too great a risk to travel anywhere. Cases are on the rise and there’s a proportion of selfish people out there who wouldn’t blink an eye about getting on a plane with mild symptoms and hope they get away with it just because they NEED their holiday.

Add in quarantine and insurance issues and it’s just a nightmare now.

SparklingSaskia · 14/08/2020 06:29

None of you planning to come to France have thought that the French government might order a quarantine for travellers from the UK too? They just did.

MRex · 14/08/2020 06:39

That's very sensible of Jean Castex. People need to be deterred from travelling either way with cases on the rise in both countries. It's sad, but hopefully won't last long (would be less time if it weren't for the idiots who still don't understand about quarantine).

Friendsoftheearth · 14/08/2020 07:09

I am relieved the government have taken action, I hope they have done it soon enough to avoid another full lockdown (and many more deaths) happening here. Spain will need a full lockdown is my guess to get the virus under control there. It is just a nightmare for everyone, travel is never going to work in a pandemic, but you can't blame people for trying to get away. It has been a very tiring year.

Friendsoftheearth · 14/08/2020 07:11

The tit for tat from the French government is childish and unhelpful.

UK stands at 18 cases per 100,000
In Paris/Marseille it is 50 cases per 100,00 - 30.5 in the rest of the country.

Clearly, there is a very big difference in new infection rates between the countries, it is not unreasonable that any country should stop travel if another country is facing a new wave of infection.

notevenat20 · 14/08/2020 07:25

How do the rules work if you cross the border and fly back from Italy to avoid the quarantine?

TimeToGoNuclear · 14/08/2020 07:26

I’ve been looking on European news sites and can’t see anything about reciprocal quarantine restrictions being announced in France, is this an official announcement?

notimagain · 14/08/2020 07:27

None of you planning to come to France have thought that the French government might order a quarantine for travellers from the UK too? They just did.

Can't find any confirmation of that..(though I suspect it's bound to happen any minute now).

Friendsoftheearth · 14/08/2020 07:27

If you cross the border before 4am tomorrow morning, you can fly home from Italy. Any stopovers however small in France after that time, you will need to quarantine.

whenwillthemadnessend · 14/08/2020 07:28

99victoria. If you get a fever out there they wont let you on the plane to come home right? You do realise airports have measured in place. ConfusedAngryHmm

You still need to be back in the UK before 4am Saturday, if you've been in France / Monaco at all. We are in France and went to Monaco for the day and luckily our flight home was always scheduled for this afternoon. Fully expecting the airport to be an 'experience' shall we say!

Except they don't. No temp checks at LHR or on arrival in France on Monday...
countryroses · 14/08/2020 07:51

It seems to me that the English one is a weird, woolly version of quarantine. It is nothing like the countries that are doing this properly and have the tech to do it.

ImAncient · 14/08/2020 08:02

@manicinsomniac

I know someone who went to Portugal a couple of weeks ago. She got ill while over there (not Covid) and required a visit to hospital for a rehydration drip or something. She said it was all covered by the EHIC and it wasn't a problem that she had no other insurance.

Not something I would have wanted to do though!

She also went for a Covid test on her return and, once she got her negative result, did not quarantine strictly Hmm (ie she went for walks and to the supermarket)

My cousin has just gone to Cyprus & you don’t need to quarantine as it’s mandatory to have a clear covid test certificate within 72 hours of landing & they are also randomly testing entire planes on landing. They are testing 1000 passengers a day.

I don’t see why if you got a clear covid test why you need to quarantine but I’m quite prepared to be told I’m wrong.
