More changes, more masks, pausing further openings - plus get back to the office.

I was quite Hmm at the idea of 5000 at the races on Saturday.

@pepperycinnamon

A face covering in a pub wouldn't really work.

On the contrary, it'd be perfect for the economy. You take it off for the first couple of pints and then forget and pour your pint down your front as the mask impedes drinking, therefore you buy more pints as they are going so quickly.

I like your thinking!! Grin
TheGreatWave · 31/07/2020 13:57

@crosseyedMary

We are a country of selfish twats who don't care I think we are a country of people who are struggling to cope with an impossible situation, and during this impossible situation the people who we elected to act as our leaders are obviously lying covering things up and giving confusing messages.
The government have manoeuvred the population into a place that they can only ever have dreamt of.

Instead of looking at their appalling handling of the whole situation everyone is too busy looking around to find the "selfish people" and blaming them.

PhilCornwall1 · 31/07/2020 14:00

@crosseyedMary

A face covering in a pub wouldn't work but who would want to be in a pub environment during a pandemic, surely you'd have to be pretty dumb to think it was a good idea?
Has been fine in the bar we go to, it's certainly not been rammed at all.
labyrinthloafer · 31/07/2020 14:00

@GreytExpectations

I feel like people on Mumsnet don't comprehend how much the country will crumble if our economy collapses. They had to open more businesses up to keep the country surviving. If the economy crashes where do you think money for education and hospitals comes from? It's not about not caring about schools, it's much bigger than that.

Yes, masks need to be mandatory is more places and actually enforced. Social distancing needs to also be strict with limited numbers allowed in at a time. I saw this coming because the rules in place are being enforced and we are a country of selfish twats who don't care. Look at all the uproar on here about having to wear a mask. If we want to get out of this shit show people needs to get a fucking grip

I feel like some people don't understand how we won't be able to restart the economy until the virus is under control.

It isn't one or the other, they go together.

Twilbury · 31/07/2020 14:02

@thegreatwave I agree with you , the manipulation and turning groups of people against each other is so sad.
As long as we are blaming each other and batching about our neighbours then we are leaving the people in charge alone.

PhilCornwall1 · 31/07/2020 14:02

My dh has received a letter that he is to shield for a further 2 weeks?

I've had the exact opposite in a text message.

Tabletime · 31/07/2020 14:02

I agree that 'Us For Them' is a @RandomStupidName for ignorant people and your comment reinforces these views.

You can't keep schools closed any longer. Our DC's education and MH is too important plus if the DC are off school, people can't work and furlough will have to be extended. It is just not feasible.

Some children's mental health is adversely affected at school. Some mental health issues need to he dealt with by the proper authorities, which the government keep scaling back. For the large majority of children, time at home and a pause in formal face to face education, provided remotely by their teachers, should not be a traumatic experience.

Of course schools are necessary and they are opening. Of course the economy matters. But stop trotting out ridiculous dramatic statements to pretend you're too special to be inconvenienced by closures, queues, doing your bit by all humans wearing masks and distancing.

The complaints and reluctance are precisely what will close schools again and then your children will be back under your feet and probably being terribly damaged.

SengaStrawberry · 31/07/2020 14:03

Totally agree. Blame people not sticking to the rules! Blame the fatties! Blame everyone but us for making a complete arse of it in the first place!

The government have manoeuvred the population into a place that they can only ever have dreamt of

This x 1000. They tell us to stay at home and we all do it, they deliver such confusing and ever changing instructions nobody can keep track of them, then when it all gets worse it’ll all be our fault. As well as turning a proportion of the population into a version of the Stasi. And please, please don’t pipe up about fucking Godwin’s sodding law.

crosseyedMary · 31/07/2020 14:05

I don't think we're going to forget the mistakes made by the government

Twilbury · 31/07/2020 14:08

@crosseyedMary I definitely won't forget but I do meet people who still tell me they think he is doing a good job.

I was even told by one person that an enquiry wasn't needed because it wasn't fair as he had tried his best.

I am so angry and I struggle to understand how anyone can still have Johnson's back.

This completely, maybe if they hadn’t been so fixated on centralising everything & hadn’t pissed all over local expertise & decimated those services over the years it might not have been so bad, but no hand out contracts to Deloitte/Serco etc & piss even more money up the wall disgraceful lot of charlatans.
feelingverylazytoday · 31/07/2020 14:10

@Polkadotties

Pubs are only being kept open due to the shit loads of money they bring in. I can go to the local pub with countless other people but not my sister own wedding reception
I'm sure Boris Johnson would love to get the whole wedding industry open again, it generates a massive amount of money especially during the summer months. Unfortunately, large family and social gatherings are known to be high risk events, there's plenty of evidence for this. That's why they're not allowed.
justasking111 · 31/07/2020 14:11

so bloody confused was waiting for Drakeford in Wales, had no idea Bojo was speaking today. Talk about different hymn sheets when crossing the borders.

PickleC · 31/07/2020 14:12

It is remarkable - they delay lockdown, send people into nursing homes untested, couldn't get the testing up quickly enough, fumble every bit of information delivered, track and trace isn't working properly, there is the app that never was ...... But then throw all responsibility back onto individuals and businesses. Oh and getting the blame in early on people bringing it back from overseas, as if most countries don't have better rates than us.

It all pushed up cases and deaths and we could be in a much better position. Nobody wants permanent restictions or there won't be many businesses still able to open back up but their own incompetence raised infection rates higher than they needed to be and put so many lives and jobs at risk.

crosseyedMary · 31/07/2020 14:16

I struggle to understand how anyone can still have Johnson's back
I think this might come down to having an authoritarian mindset, such people have been socialized to unconditionally accept what is said by those in positions of power and authority, I think it's also to do with black and white thinking ....not having the cognitive capacity to appreciate the subtleties and nuances of situation.
I'm not so much saying that people are stupid more that they are too stressed and/or lack the education required to think critically

Stasi?

Do some googling and out what it really would be like if we had the Stasi.

Such a very, very silly thing to say, coming from profound ignorance.

We don't need Godwin's law we need a "stop being a hysterical muppet" law.

@Twilbury

I hate this government!
Well let’s see your bright ideas about dealing with Covid 19
justasking111 · 31/07/2020 14:23

OMG is Boris going to storm museums, churches to make sure we are all wearing a mask. How the heck will it work without a huge change in the laws of this country. In Thailand and other places they need the army on board to achieve this type of compliance.
