Are we a couple of weeks behind Spain and France?

If Spain is v.likely in a second wave and France not far behind them does that mean we are also heading straight in to one again?

Will schools open regardless this September?

Gosh I do hope not! And schools better be open!..

mac12 · 25/07/2020 20:09

It feels like early March to me. We have a chance to learn from other countries but I’m v worried we’re not going to listen, again. The full-on schools reopening without adequate social distancing & masks is a particular English madness. I just hope Hancock & Williamson are awake to what’s going on & the latest science. They can’t claim ignorance this time round.

baroqueandblue · 25/07/2020 20:10

Of course not, because as our glorious leader never tires of telling us, we've dealt with corona virus in every world-beating way possible and we won't know ourselves by November. Besides which, as tonnes of very smart people here will tell you, covid-19 is all a hoax and we're gullible if we wear masks to go shopping.

Oh wait - 😡

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 25/07/2020 20:14

I’m also hoping they u-turn on schools and go for remote learning as much as possible. With no social distancing or PPE is sheer madness to be even contemplating it.

Mummypig2020 · 25/07/2020 20:16

I think the mental health of children/teenagers are more important than the risk of the virus.

PotteringAlong · 25/07/2020 20:17

I’m hoping that they u-turn on secondary schools reopening with no masks.

Same here.

Me too. My youngest (Y3) didn’t get to return before the summer. He doesn’t want to be on summer hols, he wants to be back at school, it’s affected him massively. Older ds wasn’t phased by the whole thing as he’s a totally different character, he also got to return for a few weeks.
DancingInDespair · 25/07/2020 20:25

Yep.
They should have kept encouraging people to WFH, for a start.
I give it two weeks for a rise in cases, and I've not been pessimistic any of the way through, until now.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/07/2020 20:28

School better bloody be open. DS has changed into a completely different child since school closed, he's angry, lonely (only child) and lost all confidence. Plus I cannot work from home so no idea how I'm supposed to pay bills if school is shut.

RandomMess · 25/07/2020 20:28

I still can't believe that in Spain nightclubs reopened 😳

It’s important but not more so than the lives of staff or other family members.
yeOldeTrout · 25/07/2020 20:32

Nightclubs reopened in South Korea.

I didn't think France was so bad. Link? These curves don't look similar to me.

@ProfessorPootle same here with my year 3

Littlemeadow123 · 25/07/2020 20:33

I don't think it's a case of who is behind who anymore. Not like it was in March.

Can we please not wish a 2nd wave on ourselves?

nether · 25/07/2020 20:34

Rises in several places in Europe. Let's hope they can quash them rapidly, otherwise yes it could be quite worrying in a few weeks

I don't think anybody is wishing a second wave. Just dreading it. I don't know that my mental health can cope with any more to be honest.
mac12 · 25/07/2020 20:38

Schools need to reopen but they don’t need to reopen without masks, good ventilation & increased distancing (perhaps part-time, perhaps giving parents choice whether to home school). Learn from Israel’s mistakes so we can get kids back to school safely.

mac12 · 25/07/2020 20:39

Wishing a second wave? Dreading it, which is why desperately want england to rethink current schools plan

Littlemeadow123 · 25/07/2020 20:43

@DancingInDespair

There are some people on mumsnet enjoying this period a little bit too much. Like people who are hoping that there will be another lockdown so schools don't have to re-open. Or people who wanted lockdown to be extended to January next year just so they wouldn't have to go back to work. Not to mention all the doom and gloom and scaremongering types who are thoroughly enjoying living through a crisis and don't really want it to end.

Littlemeadow123 · 25/07/2020 20:46

@mac12

Just out of interest, what do you suggest a student who is hard of hearing and needs to lip read do if masks are made mandatory in schools? It has the potebtial to become quite isolating.

I work in a senior school and there is no way the students will keep masks on unless the staff superglue them to their heads.

ballsdeep · 25/07/2020 20:47

To the poster who said it feels like early march, it does to me too.

It's like watching it happen all around the world and praying it doesn't happen to us and then boom! I'm certainly not wishing for a second wave. I'm a teacher and desperately want things to go back to normal and children to be back in school. However, September is a long time away so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I wouldn't be surprised if teachers all have to wear masks

MRex · 25/07/2020 20:48

If we open nightclubs, theatres and other loud venues then yes. If there isn't good enough control and compliance in pubs around noise then yes. I hope we don't. I also hope France can still rein in their outbreaks quickly because they aren't yet as bad as Spain. There's a point where strong rises in cases across a country look inevitable, you see it in the countries marching up the table of worldwide cases, but Spain isn't there yet with these new rises and I hope they get a handle on this without getting there.

Mummypig2020 · 25/07/2020 20:51

It
Doesn’t feel like anything like March.

MRex · 25/07/2020 20:52

@yeOldeTrout - Nightclubs reopened in South Korea.
Eh? They opened, had a shitload of cases from several nightclub clusters, then closed again indefinitely. You might want to actually know facts before you shrug.
