Are we a couple of weeks behind Spain and France?

If Spain is v.likely in a second wave and France not far behind them does that mean we are also heading straight in to one again?

Will schools open regardless this September?

@derxa

I'm gonna go fucking insane reading this hysterical shite. Goodbye Mumsnet. Will return when the pandemic is over and sanity returns That's how I feel. Poor school kids and young people
This is the sort of thing that's making me rethink smoking.

I quit some years ago. Now I'm considering taking it up again. It's no world to be old in. Not today's society.

A return to widespread smoking is a win win. More tax - much needed to offset the economic impact of coronavirus, lower pension burden, and no more worry over care home funding.

Nicotine might protect against severe illness from coronavirus to boot. I know there was a clinical trial looking into this.

Education IS a priority.
And we will wear masks if needed, both children and adults. We will get used to it. To sanitising, distancing, desinfecting toilets/ surface after we use them, whatever needed to get out of this. But we cannot cope with a lost future, with children disengaged from their education, and lacking in knowledge

MushMonster · 25/07/2020 22:40

Our school has been giving them work to do, but no actual lessons. They wil never learn anything like this!

ShootsFruitsAndLeaves · 25/07/2020 22:43

I’m a little confused by this. Does the UK not still have the highest daily covid death rate in Europe? So you’re still in your first wave?

Are you really this poorly informed? Or merely obtuse?

Pomegranatepompom · 25/07/2020 22:44

@flowerycurtain absolutely agree. The priorities were wrong.

Oaktree55 · 25/07/2020 22:47

I now see how we have the Prime Minister we do who says “we will be near normal by Christmas” when the whole of the U.K. appears to have its head in the sand, if the responses in the main on here are representative. Look at how poorly our track and trace is performing. Read up on what scientists and medics are predicting. It’s really not rocket science.

Pomegranatepompom · 25/07/2020 22:47

People (some) have enjoyed the extra time at home but if people don't want to go back to their jobs, there's going to be a lot of being willing to apply/train.

Annierose293 · 25/07/2020 22:53

A lot can change in 5/6 weeks.
As I stand at the moment I have to send my child (who is at high risk of complications if he gets the virus) to school or face a fine.
Whether that will change if the cases start to rise again between now and then, I have no idea. It terrifies me. I almost lost him once and I can't risk him getting this not knowing how it will effect him.

derxa · 25/07/2020 22:53

Our school has been giving them work to do, but no actual lessons. They wil never learn anything like this! It's an absolute bloody disgrace and I used to be a teacher.

If you don’t want to send him don’t. Fines will be unenforceable and Gov knows it. Law based on reasonableness and it would be reasonable to keep any child off school when the distancing measures don’t match guidance elsewhere. Someone will tests fines in Court pretty soon if they’re ever issued.
Pomegranatepompom · 25/07/2020 22:59

@derxa It's a complete disgrace - so disappointing.

DebLou47 · 25/07/2020 22:59

@ktp100

I’m also hoping they u-turn on schools and go for remote learning as much as possible. With no social distancing or PPE is sheer madness to be even contemplating it.

Totally agree.

bananaskinsnomnom · 25/07/2020 22:59

As someone who, like the majority, doesn’t truly understand the science of how this virus works (and lets be honest the vast bulk of people don’t truly understand) - I do wonder why it hasn’t rocketed already. Think about our beaches, the protests, lack of masks until last week, a lot of children (not all obviously) back at school, pubs and shops (without masks) have been open a few weeks now. If it’s going to rocket it will be soon but I wonder how it hasn’t risen more since significantly with these things happening?

Please don’t get rude anyone. No one has the answers here. These are just my thoughts and musings

LittleRen · 25/07/2020 23:00

@ChateauMargaux cases in Spain are around three times UK cases. Deaths may not be as high but we know it takes 2-3 weeks for someone to die from Covid, and we also know many young people are
catching it in Spain so deaths will likely be lower. We are also testing more than Spain.

The UK is densely populated and has a higher population than Spain - it’s unlikely we will ‘bottom out’ with zero deaths any time soon. Cases per one million in Spain are much higher.

We need to look as cases, not deaths.

Are you kidding ? Kids are suffering mentally and so are parents including myself working full time and home schooling .... if we keep licking down there will be nothing to come out too !!!
Karenovirus · 25/07/2020 23:01

IF you believe this virus is highly contagious & spread by the asymptomatic and everyone is susceptible then lockdowns aren't going to stop the spread. They'll just delay it.

Unless you isolate yourself completely, indefinitely.

Just suck it up. Some people are going to get sick & die. But then every year, people do. Some years more than others. And thank fuck this is a virus that doesn't kill babies & children for the most part. There are plenty of those around....measles, RSV etc ....But life goes on.

DebLou47 · 25/07/2020 23:01

@Oaktree55

For those wondering if the U.K. will follow suit: Is the virus the same here ? Are we biologically the same as the Spanish? Do we do the same things the Spanish do? Do we have a competent Gov with a working track and trace system?

Blimey guys it’s not rocket science. Of course numbers will go up here particularly when we all go inside more. Crikey 10% of people in U.K. been infected (at a generous guess) that’s 90% still susceptible to a virus that’s spread grows exponentially.

I wonder about the intelligence of many I really do.

This !!
ThatsHowWeRowl · 25/07/2020 23:03

Cannot believe that some people think the schools shouldn't re-open in Sept! Kids will have been off for 6 months, with a not insignificant proportion of those kids doing absolutely fuck all in terms of learning. Pubs, restaurants, shops are open but not schools? No. It doesn't even affect children badly, it's not fair on them.

JeSuisPoulet · 25/07/2020 23:07

We really need to hope the local authorities are getting some funding around now, so that they can do localised testing and lockdowns (we should have been doing this for the first wave but the centralisation of PHE led to cutting of the majority of track and trace experts). Many LA's are barely surviving as it is without another wave that they have to pay for.

Oaktree55 · 25/07/2020 23:08

Final point. People saying ALL kids are suffering and need to be back etc etc are wrong. Some kids will be severely disadvantaged, the ones who were the most vulnerable before this. Some however have parents willing to home school temporarily, some sensibly want to give science a chance to catch up (each day more is learnt so going back in September vs next year will likely be very different). Everyone says about kids mental health, how do you think they’ll feel when their teacher/family member is in icu from a school outbreak?! We’re in unprecedented times. Reverting to 2019 in any aspect of our lives including schooling just isn’t going to happen. We all need to work together to achieve a new normal.

SirVixofVixHall · 25/07/2020 23:09

The mental health of teens will suffer in school too, mine are already really worried and frightened about going back as some of their friends are having parties and not being careful at all, while others are also anxious and taking care. If you have a family who are at increased risk, as we do, then going straight from socially distancing and not meeting friends, to full on school with no protection, is a huge and very scary shift.
So it isn’t as simple as mental health suffering at home, back to school all will be fine. I know my dc will refuse to use the school loos and so not drink. They will be anxious about all the social interaction. After the recent study in South Korea that showed secondary aged children the most likely people to transmit the virus I am also extremely worried.

cosycatsocks · 25/07/2020 23:11

Of course there will be some sort of furlough scheme in the event of a second government mandated lockdown, politically there would have to be. They can literally print money!
Then hold on to your hats for painful inflation which will be needed to erode all the debt.

Sorry but I completely disagree you know most of the deaths are over 80? Do you also know there were 21 suicides in the last month in one city ??? Utter bullshit .. most people survive this virus .. I Am more worried about the pandemic if mental health after this than the virus sorry but you are talking shit
Pomegranatepompom · 25/07/2020 23:14

I would imagine children would feel less stressed about attending school than they do about parents working in high risk areas. Bit hysterical to give an itu example.
