Just heard this on breaking news.

From midnight tonight? Bad news for anyone who is there now and due to travel home. We were supposed to be going at the end of August and now I’m limbo about what to do!!!

@Freeekedout

We booked in September and took out insurance through the Post Office at the same time, so a reputable enough source. But their policy excludes epidemics and pandemics so, contrary to popular belief, those who booked before Covid aren't covered 😢
Check this out. I may be wrong but I am sure I heard or read somewhere back in April or may time that anyone who booked before lockdown would be covered.

The same as the Iceland ash cloud. Many insurances don't cover for acts of god.

But yet this was an unprecedented situation and some of the rules relaxed.

Freeekedout · 25/07/2020 21:58

ohthegoats And your point is...? Done of us are law abiding citizens who take our social responsibilities seriously and would quarantine on our return of that's what the government tell us to do.

NewNewt · 25/07/2020 22:00

depends on the insurer. Mine covered until 20th March. Some always had pandemic and epidemic exclusion clauses.

DisobedientHamster · 25/07/2020 22:00

@IAintentDead

Is anyone really worried if random internet posters think they are selfish. I can't think of anyone's opinion that could matter less.

As for the 'zero sympathy' people - Again, having or not having your sympathy couldn't matter less

👏👏👏

In real life, some people will just go anyway, say little to nothing, come back, sign a few forms and carry on. There isn't the manpower to police this.

Alex50 · 25/07/2020 22:02

My son came back from Tenerife a couple of weeks ago, he’s fine had a test when he came back, he said there were Russians flying from Tenerife back to the uk and then to Russia as they couldn’t gets direct flight home, it makes a mockery of the whole thing.

DisobedientHamster · 25/07/2020 22:02

@ohthegoats

No one is policing a quarantine properly in the UK.
And? There's not even enough manpower to police it during regular times. 10 years of Tory government cutting and cutting hasn't helped, either. So don't vote Tory. Vote for a stronger police state if it gives you the warm fuzzies and keeps you cozy at night.
Alex50 · 25/07/2020 22:04

@DisobedientHamster so true no one will check, the whole thing is farcical.

MarshaBradyo · 25/07/2020 22:06

In real life, some people will just go anyway, say little to nothing, come back, sign a few forms and carry on.

There will be some who won’t care, but like other stuff (restrictions / masks) most do what is asked.

Plus restrictions brings in travel cancellations and insurance issues

NewNewt · 25/07/2020 22:09

unless your jealous neighbour reports you ....

Thing for me now is, how good a holiday is it even going to be now? Virtually empty hotels, no other kids to play with, defeats the object for me. Friends in Majorca now (booked in August last year) report that its all fine but they're the only English speaking people in the hotel and everywhere is very empty.

mac12 · 25/07/2020 22:09

@olympicsrock sorry to hear about your travel disruption. Off topic & I’m sure you’re already being careful as HCP but please don’t think you’re immune for a year, there are already multiple cases of reinfection in Israel, Iran, Italy & the US. m.jpost.com/health-science/israeli-doctor-reinfected-with-coronavirus-3-months-after-recovering-635550/amp?__twitter_impression=true

itsgettingweird · 25/07/2020 22:09

Actually having had a quick google of post office travel insurance they actually state they won't pay out if you've had to cancel because a family member has died of covid Shock

Like you could have known that would happen if you booked September 2019.

But it seems if you died of something different they'd pay out.

itsgettingweird · 25/07/2020 22:10

Oh and I meant family members named on travel documents as travelling.

Not just great aunt Joan who wasn't even due to fly.

DisobedientHamster · 25/07/2020 22:12

Plenty of people don't have such neighbours or young kids, or kids at all, and enjoy the emptiness. All depends on what you're looking for.
tigger1001 · 25/07/2020 22:14

It shouldn't need to be policed. If people go then they factor in the requirement to quarantine in return. It shouldn't need to be enforced.

Sadly the pandemic has shown that people really are that selfish.

NewNewt · 25/07/2020 22:15

er, that is very far from proven and many papers are coming out now saying at least 3 months immunity as thats obviously as far out as they've been able to test and actually its expected to be more like 1-3 years for most people. Even the article you linked to makes it clear they think that they're detecting the same infection 3m later:

"The doctor “tested positive again because she has remnants of her first virus still floating around in her body,” a hospital spokesperson told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday"

Many/most/all of the apparent reinfections detected within the comparatively short timescales that we're still in for this pandemic are thought to be the same infection that went below detection levels then came up again and false negative tests.

saltycat · 25/07/2020 22:15

We have to get real here. I was very surprised that Spain was ok at first but Portugal was not included in the initial announcement.

This Summer is a write off. And ironically would be such a lovely time to go with few people around and so on. But it is a risk to you, your family and shielders in your circle.

Sorry for those who might lose money. But if you go, please observe the quarantine on return.

You see the Government have abdicated responsibility for this to YOU. Not any overseer, not any police, but you. Cummings written all over this. Talk about passing the buck.

But however, most of us know what the right thing to do is.

ShanghaiDiva · 25/07/2020 22:22

Dh returned from China at the beginning of the month and completed two weeks quarantine at home. However, nobody checked that he stayed at home, not even a phone call.

And the person or people who lived with you are not obligated to quarantine so the entire thing is pointless.
ShanghaiDiva · 25/07/2020 22:26

Exactly!

Bringonspring · 25/07/2020 22:28

Idiots for going

daisymay133 · 25/07/2020 22:33

People won’t need to factor in isolation

You won’t be going!!!

EasyJet just cancelled mine - email just came thru confirming they’re cancelled due to gov advice it’s non essential

No one will be going mainland Spain now whether they want to or not

Islands will be based on operators but many won’t fly you

timeforawine · 25/07/2020 22:35

Those saying those going are selfish etc, we will go because we will lose all the money, we booked before covid, couldn't cancel earlier as was told 'see nearer the time' insurance you can only claim within 30 days of travel if the FCO advices against travel, but now the FCO advice is ok to the Spanish islands we have no get out clause. But we will adhere to rules, we won't go out, we'll pull our daughter out of nursery earlier than planned (she starts school in September) and we'll have online groceries delivered, it's shit but we don't want to lose all that money Sad

EasterIssland · 25/07/2020 22:37

@daisymay133 When were you due to fly ?

Stellakent · 25/07/2020 22:39

I booked my holiday to Spain last year - before we'd even heard of Covid 19. I was due to go tomorrow. I had an email from the tour operator cancelling my holiday just over an hour after the FCO announcement. I'm disappointed, although we were unsure anyway about going, but will get all my money back.
