Is anyone else sick of the mask brigade?

I am going to be wearing a face covering from the 24th.
However I’m getting sick of the constant steam of ‘shaming’ on social media especially.
The latest is a passive aggressive meme being shared which says ‘if you don’t like the mask, you definitely won’t like being intubated in the ICU’
I’ve just seen another one on a local page in the style of queen’s ‘we will rock you’. Basically “you’re a big disgrace, spreading your germs all over the place” blah blah blah.
I have anxiety and panic attacks and I am going to struggle wearing one, although I’m going to try my best. There are those who really won’t be able to for various reasons - asthma, copd, autism, other mental health issues and I bet they’re reading these posts feeling awful about themselves.

Middle section Meant to say if we didn't wear them at height why now and if it was to save PPE for the NHS the government willingly put us all in danger.

MrsGrindah · 16/07/2020 18:21

I don’t understand why a mask is seen as essential but not gloves? Yes a sneeze carries far and wide, but you touch multiple surfaces picking up and leaving god knows what. So if you are “ terrified” about people not wearing masks surely you need them to wear gloves too?

BigChocFrenzy · 16/07/2020 18:23

and I'm sick of whingeing by those who make masks into such a drama

We've been wearing them in Germany since mid-April

Those who genuinely can't wear them get a simple exemption form signed by their doctor

No drama

... and sorry to disappoint the Doomsters,
but despite / because of masks, footfall in shops and restaurants here has shot up once infections fell and the economy was reopened

Some of the elderly are staying home,
but there would be even more vulnerable people doing that if mask-wearing compliance here wasn't high

The Uk should recover too, like other countries, e.g. graph

  • UK lockdown has only lasted so long because it was started too late
Is anyone else sick of the mask brigade?

Slight problem with that, there isn't one.

The virus is inhaled, hence masks to protect those around - and to a much lesser extent, the wearer

Wearing gloves means any particles get on the gloves, so you still have to avoid touching your mouth & nose
Then you have to take off the gloves carefully

Much better to wash hands thoroughly, or use sanitiser when not possible

..... There is in Germany and it was organised in time for the regulation

The Uk govt is perfectly capable of doing the same

BigChocFrenzy · 16/07/2020 18:31

Noone with an exemption should be harassed in any way

Genuinely why?

MrsGrindah · 16/07/2020 18:38

@BigChocFrenzy Yes I know that I just meant the focus seems to be all on the mask but there are other contact points too.

You are thinking to highly of our "great leader" and the cabinet.

They aren't capable of colouring in a picture.

that's the main problem

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 16/07/2020 18:48

@StuffThem

Oh goodness the whole 'you won't like being on a ventilator' posts are bloody awful.

Well that's the whole point of them - they remind people what is at stake.

I'm fed up of all the anti mask posts on mumsnet. If you (genuinely) can't wear one then just go about your business, and stay the F away from me thanks.

No they don't, they just make me laugh at the stupidity of the person posting them.

I hate wearing masks, they are uncomfortable, I feel panicky and I can't breathe properly. I will obviously wear one where it's unavoidable but be I won't be going shopping or to restaurants while they are compulsory. The thing is, despite what certain posters on MN seem to think, I'm allowed to say I don't like them and why.

tigger1001 · 16/07/2020 18:56

@Meredithgrey1

I agree, I wear a mask, but I don't have to like it. I see the need for it, and I don't disagree with them being made mandatory, but I am allowed to say "masks are horrible and I don't want to wear one" - I still wear it, I do lots of things I don't like but accept are necessary. It's like when we first went into lockdown, anyone who talked about how they were finding it hard was instantly told to get a grip and shut up. Obviously wearing a mask is not as unpleasant as needing a ventilator, no one thinks that it is. But something doesn't have to be the worst thing in the world to warrant a bit of a whinge.
This! Totally agree. I hate wearing a mask, but I do so anyway (already mandatory here) I also now restrict my trips out the house now as have no desire to wear one longer than necessary so limit my trips to food shops every couple of weeks. That's no big deal to me, I just order stuff online instead of go into shops.

I am entitled to air my view on them, as well as comment on how often I see people wearing them incorrectly or feel that as they have a mask on they no longer need to social distance.

LastTrainEast · 16/07/2020 18:57

I suppose most of us are a bit tired of those having tantrums about it. Okay some people can't. Fair enough, but I'm talking about the "oh you can't make me so THERE!" people. Unless they are all 12yo there's something very wrong.

Further up someone said "YANBU /can't believe how easily the Gvt was hoodwinked I to giving into the crazies."

THE government? Like it was just the UK wearing masks, lol

Elsewhere on social media I've been told that it's abuse to make you wear a mask and could lead to a prison sentence. (they were not clear on the details)

That It's a plot by the Lizards, Jesuits, Bill Gates or the Milk Marketing Board to make people sick.

That it's to take away your human rights so you won't object when they round you up to go to the camps.

it's just a cloth over your lower face. Awkward, uncomfortable yes, but so what.

PhilCornwall1 · 16/07/2020 18:58

Christ, I buggered up my to, too and two in that line!!

ScrapThatThen · 16/07/2020 19:06

Public opprobrium or approval is the way humans engineer social compliance, we're wired that way.

Rupertpenrysmistress · 16/07/2020 19:17

I don't like wearing them but as a frontline nurse have been for the last 3 weeks for 12 out of 13 hours per day and often 3 days in a row. My skin is sore, my lips are so dry they may not recover, my ears have pressure damage but, my patients need me to wear them. My DH and DM who are shielding need me to.

You do get used to them, my ds who is asthmatic wears them and copes.

It really is another defence against this disease and I have seen too many die.

I am not sure me and my colleagues can take a second wave. I know some people really can't wear them. Let's all do the best we can please.

Runmybathforme · 16/07/2020 19:30

Glad it’s not just me. I bloody hate wearing them, which I have to do all day for work. I now have spots on my chin which I haven’t suffered from for bloody years.
But, so much worse than the smug “ oh you must wear a mask or you’ll kill us all “ brigade, are the Glove People. No amount of logic will budge them.
Before anyone starts on me, I’m a nurse, I bloody know about the masks, just sick of them.

InFiveMins · 16/07/2020 19:52

@StellaRockafella

Wearing a mask is about protecting others people from the possibility you might have COVID-19 and could infect others. Ergo, I consider the anti-mask brigade are selfish and disrespectful towards others.

I have zero tolerance for those who won’t wear a mask. I loathe wearing one but having worn one in public since late May. I am menopausal, hot and sweaty at the best of times. The mask makes me even hotter and sweatier. But, it’s about doing the right thing and thinking of others.

If you don’t want to wear a mask for whatever reason, stay at home. It’s that simple.

Or perhaps you should stay at home if you don't want to risk catching COVID? Why should I wear a mask because others are afraid of a virus with a high survival rate?

Those who are afraid can stay at home for years if they want to. The rest of us should be able to get on with our lives as normal. It's THAT simple.

Lweji · 16/07/2020 20:02

The rest of us should be able to get on with our lives as normal. It's THAT simple.

And let numbers go up again. And then back to lockdown. How does that sound to you?

Exactly. If the human race had cowered under the duvet we wouldn't be here now. We are here because done of our ancestors didn't hide under a rock!
It is those who are afraid of their own shadow who should stay at home.

Sleepyblueocean · 16/07/2020 20:38

"Those who genuinely can't wear them get a simple exemption form signed by their doctor"

My GP surgery have said that they will not get involved in any exemption certification or notes unless they are told they have to do it ( presumably because they have enough to do) and that the government guidelines do not say that people have to provide evidence of exemption.

sleepingpup · 16/07/2020 20:45

sick of people saying shit like this.

This isn't just getting it off your chest or having a singe it's just spectacularly ignorant.
