Is anyone else sick of the mask brigade?

I am going to be wearing a face covering from the 24th.
However I’m getting sick of the constant steam of ‘shaming’ on social media especially.
The latest is a passive aggressive meme being shared which says ‘if you don’t like the mask, you definitely won’t like being intubated in the ICU’
I’ve just seen another one on a local page in the style of queen’s ‘we will rock you’. Basically “you’re a big disgrace, spreading your germs all over the place” blah blah blah.
I have anxiety and panic attacks and I am going to struggle wearing one, although I’m going to try my best. There are those who really won’t be able to for various reasons - asthma, copd, autism, other mental health issues and I bet they’re reading these posts feeling awful about themselves.

Brigade? Oh dear.

cyclingmad · 16/07/2020 14:11

cough cough cough

EmMac7 · 16/07/2020 14:12

I’m sick of the irrational whinging from the anti-mask types.

MulierLite · 16/07/2020 14:13

No
I am, however, sick of the selfish whingers.

cologne4711 · 16/07/2020 14:13

I am also sick of wearing mine because I want to protect those around me, but feeling stupid because I am the one in 10 person who is bothering

Yesterday in my local area about 50% were bothering. But until it's law you can't expect anyone to. I imagine as people get hold of them over the next few days, they'll become more common.

I fully understand why people with medical conditions are feeling very worried about the whole mask situation

Yes I can understand the anxiety of being told you can't go into a shop.

KarenMcKaren · 16/07/2020 14:14

Yep it's pretty dull op. Putting out a reminder for the date: fine. Constant sanctimonious posts: not fine. At least it shows me who to delete or hide though.

bigbluebus · 16/07/2020 14:16

The one that got me on FB this morning was the video of an NHS doctor (allegedly) showing us all that a mask doesn't affect your Oxygen levels so everyone can wear one. Considering an NHS hospital had to close it's A&E due to Covid amongst staff (in the news today) and the blame has been placed on NHS staff who attended a training course plus one of their senior staff was shown at a press conference under a sign telling everyone to wear a mask whilst sitting next to a colleague (neither of them wearing masks) then I think they should start by preaching to their own first! Anyone in a hospital should have been wearing a mask already.

cologne4711 · 16/07/2020 14:17

Yes! Holier than thou and sanctimonious

Much like the MNers who in the early days of lockdown were telling us we couldn't buy chocolate or wine or Easter eggs. Didn't we know there was a PANDEMIC going on and we were going to KILL people and BURDEN the NHS. And as for going out for a short drive to get somewhere for a walk - the SHAME.

The difference being, that not buying an Easter egg never saved
anyone, but wearing a mask could save someone.

Got to say the cost of them is annoying though. I reckon I've spent about £40 on fabric ones for my household now and there are only 3 of us! DH and I don't really need that many unless/until we go back to office work other than shop visits but DS will need two a day once back at college for the bus journeys there and back.

LimitIsUp · 16/07/2020 14:17

I am 'happy' to wear a mask indoors (well not happy, but I accept it is necessary), but I can't stand how at every stage covid has encouraged the sanctimonious. At the beginning it was the excessive 'Stay at homers' having a fit over dog walkers loading their dogs in a car to drive a couple of miles to a large open green space. Now it's mask vigilantes. Leave it alone and fuck off why don't you (addressed to the covid warriors rather tan anyone on this thread)

HappyHammy · 16/07/2020 14:17

Why is it such s big deal. You wear a face covering to try and reduce the risk of this spreading. How long do people take to do their shopping. Im in and out in less than half an hour. If you cant wear something close then try a face shield or stay in. Its getting to be a ridiculous non issue.

Mischance · 16/07/2020 14:18

Please do not try cod psycho-analysis (seeking validation etc.!) on those people who have the decency to wear a mask to protect their community from the spread of the virus. Thank them.

cologne4711 · 16/07/2020 14:18

Yes I can understand the anxiety of being told you can't go into a shop

Just read that again and saw that it could be read the wrong way. I meant, yes I can understand that if you are medically exempt but have nothing to prove it, it would make you worried to go into a shop in case you were challenged by staff or interfering customers.

cologne4711 · 16/07/2020 14:20

If mask-wearing makes people faff around less, get what they want and leave quickly, that will be marvellous. Shorter queues, and hopefully fewer family outings to the supermarket.

PhilCornwall1 · 16/07/2020 14:22

It's the typical thing that will happen. If Johnson has turned around and said that there was scientific evidence that masks can help spread it, the sanctimonious tossers would be having a go at mask wearers.

This will run and run and carry on from the pointless lockdown breaking ranting.

Just ignore it all, it's pointless waffle.

QOD · 16/07/2020 14:27

I have been and will be wearing masks, the benefit of everyone else wearing masks from the 24th is that my mum, who is age vulnerable but only just, will start going into shops again.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 16/07/2020 14:31

I’m willing to wager that no one likes wearing a mask. They’re hot, itchy (and you can’t scratch), uncomfortable, unattractive and all round unpleasant. I’ve got to wear one for around 12 hours tomorrow and am not exactly looking forward to it.

But needs fucking must.

When the 24th rolls around, I am of the opinion that those who can’t wear one won’t and I won’t judge them. I just wish people would stop winging about it.

epythymy · 16/07/2020 14:32

@Lindy2

I expect other people are also literally sick of being infected by non mask wearers.
The human race has literally evolved to be able to cope with infections. A couple of years ago I read an article in the guardian about a study which had found a link between children who were not exposed to germs as babies and leukaemia...

Call me silly but I'd rather have a cold than leukaemia. I'd rather have a robust, well functioning immune system than "never be sick", until the one time I am and it kills me because I've lived in a sterile world

This mask thing is another crisis waiting to happen. Protecting people now, killing them in the future.

Livelaughwhat · 16/07/2020 14:35

I’ve been to the supermarket today wearing a mask for the first time but I couldn’t see out of my glasses as they’d steamed up. Obviously I need to wear a mask but I need my glasses too. Does anyone have any ideas how I can solve this?

Jrobhatch29 · 16/07/2020 14:38

That meme isnt as bad as this on the front of a theatre....

Is anyone else sick of the mask brigade?
ThatDamnScientist · 16/07/2020 14:39

I am asthmatic and my eldest child is asthmatic and autistic - we are both wearing masks to protect others - the least others can do is show a little respect and return the favour instead of whinging about it and the minor inconvenience of wearing a mask for 30 minutes or so. If shaming is what is needed then so be it.

Those that seriously aren't able (none of those lame excuses that are doing the rounds) shouldn't be feeling bad (my 5 year old is also autistic and can't wear one even though she has tried her hardest). Bit those that think it is an infringement of their rights by being made to wear a mask, it will reduce oxygen levels (debunked bullshit) and another other such crap ought to be shamed until they grow the fuck up and stop being selfish pricks.

StellaRockafella · 16/07/2020 14:48

Wearing a mask is about protecting others people from the possibility you might have COVID-19 and could infect others. Ergo, I consider the anti-mask brigade are selfish and disrespectful towards others.

I have zero tolerance for those who won’t wear a mask. I loathe wearing one but having worn one in public since late May. I am menopausal, hot and sweaty at the best of times. The mask makes me even hotter and sweatier. But, it’s about doing the right thing and thinking of others.

If you don’t want to wear a mask for whatever reason, stay at home. It’s that simple.

ThatDamnScientist · 16/07/2020 14:49

This is where some sort of certificate should have been set up (that would have been a useful reason for the two week postponement of wearing them - enough time get evidence to get cert/badge whatever issued).
Chochito · 16/07/2020 14:50

Just stay at home, OP.

sleepingpup · 16/07/2020 14:53

That sort of black and white thinking, the need to be seen to be 'doing right' is often a cover for issues in their own lives. The need for external validation, covering for things they'd rather remain hidden.

dear god
And that's not black and white thinking?

what a load of arse.

Call me silly but I'd rather have a cold than leukaemia. I'd rather have a robust, well functioning immune system than "never be sick", until the one time I am and it kills me because I've lived in a sterile world

Call me silly, but I'd rather have a husband who wasn't shielding with cancer. And needed so much protection from everyone else. 🤷‍♀️

WTF?

Talk about a^^ 'Brigade' making other people feel awful. look at yourselves.

.

@Livelaughwhat

posted earlier on Style&Beauty and got some good suggestions.

Chochito · 16/07/2020 14:53

Livelaughwhat wash your glasses' lenses in soapy water and leave to air-dry

Also make sure your mask fits properly, it sounds as though it doesn't fit properly over your nose or cheekbones which is why excess air is escaping out of the top. A pharmacist or a nurse or doctor if you know one can explain how to fit your mask. This applies to everyone not just glasses wearers.
