Is anyone else sick of the mask brigade?

I am going to be wearing a face covering from the 24th.
However I’m getting sick of the constant steam of ‘shaming’ on social media especially.
The latest is a passive aggressive meme being shared which says ‘if you don’t like the mask, you definitely won’t like being intubated in the ICU’
I’ve just seen another one on a local page in the style of queen’s ‘we will rock you’. Basically “you’re a big disgrace, spreading your germs all over the place” blah blah blah.
I have anxiety and panic attacks and I am going to struggle wearing one, although I’m going to try my best. There are those who really won’t be able to for various reasons - asthma, copd, autism, other mental health issues and I bet they’re reading these posts feeling awful about themselves.

Why would you be sick of people trying not to infect you?

ballsdeep · 16/07/2020 14:55

I am in Wales and I hope we have to wear them soon.

firstimemamma · 16/07/2020 14:55

Yanbu op.

TimeForLunch · 16/07/2020 14:58

Yes. YANBU.

Meredithgrey1 · 16/07/2020 15:05

I agree, I wear a mask, but I don't have to like it. I see the need for it, and I don't disagree with them being made mandatory, but I am allowed to say "masks are horrible and I don't want to wear one" - I still wear it, I do lots of things I don't like but accept are necessary.
It's like when we first went into lockdown, anyone who talked about how they were finding it hard was instantly told to get a grip and shut up.
Obviously wearing a mask is not as unpleasant as needing a ventilator, no one thinks that it is. But something doesn't have to be the worst thing in the world to warrant a bit of a whinge.

GivememyowlbackSandra · 16/07/2020 15:09

It's been mandatory in Scotland for nearly a week and it would appear the majority of people are just getting on with it. If it gets us back to normality sooner, then why not?

I agree with everything you have said there! I will wear a mask if required, but don't see why I should be told there is something wrong with me if I don't like them and very much hope mask wearing does not become a thing forever. They are hot, and horrible, and itchy and you can't tell me I don't feel that, because I do. It's a bit like breastfeeding - all the people in the world can tell me "it doesn't hurt if you are doing it right" - it bloody does, to start with, for me anyway, and I will moan about it, even though I am still completely in favour of it.
Sleepyblueocean · 16/07/2020 15:35

I've seen 'proud to wear a mask' doing the rounds. Just bloody wear it. No need to be proud about it.

What's next, clap for mask wearers every Thursday at 8pm.

I'm sure some twat will suggest this.

IAmTheBFG · 16/07/2020 15:42

My daughter's university are planning to introduce masks in all communal spaces. My daughter is fine with it, but it's impossible to glance down at your paper when wearing a mask because the mask restricts your vision, so taking notes while wearing one (in a class, or in the library) is going to be a challenge. I think the outcry against masks is because although the difficulties with wearing them are minimal, they are numerous (eg. steaming up glasses, having to always remember to carry one around with you, skin irritation from the mask touching your skin, breathing being more difficult, not being able to interpret other people's facial expressions so easily...). This doesn't mean we shouldn't wear masks, but equally it's fine to complain about the small inconveniences involved in wearing one, particularly because these small inconveniences will impact on every day of our lives for as long as masks are compulsory.

Sleepyblueocean · 16/07/2020 15:46

"If you cant wear something close then try a face shield or stay in."

It's this sort of comment that leads to comments about mask brigades If someone can't wear a mask they are exempt and don't have to stay in.

PhilCornwall1 · 16/07/2020 16:01

"If you cant wear something close then try a face shield or stay in."

This one has been done to death on threads already. There are facial problems that stops this being a possibility too.

veryvery · 16/07/2020 16:01

I've got a couple. I'll just wear them and try not to think about it to much. I see the point of them but I'm not that hung up about it. Thankfully I don't find them too uncomfortable.

Lweji · 16/07/2020 16:03

You lost me at brigade.

Sick of people using the term. Wink

lifeafter50 · 16/07/2020 16:16

YANBU /can't believe how easily the Gvt was hoodwinked I to giving into the crazies.
Shop footfall will plummet -aAmazon profits will rocket - good move, not.
The sort of people bleating for mask to be compulsory will be joyless types who count their change carefully for fear of being ripped off a few pence /hardly the big spenders who will refloat the economy.
A better move would have been simply to let individual shop decide whether or not to insist on masks on their shops -that would be instructional on public opinion. If people really were flocking to the mask/Stasi shops the others would soon comply through market forces. Except it would more likely be the opposite.
Online retailers will flourish though.

Isotope456 · 16/07/2020 16:56

Agree with the OP. Completely on board with wearing a mask and will be doing so but sick of hearing from the mask-shamers and self-appointed mask police.

Plenty of them on here that's for sure.

sorry but this is vile and puts you firmly in the "nasty anti mask brigade" @Isotope456 .And just as bad.

Moonshinemisses · 16/07/2020 17:05

Haven't seen any mask shaming on sm. I am sick of all the fucking threads on here about masks though.

sleepingpup · 16/07/2020 17:06

why complain about people going on about and be just as sanctimoniously judgemental yourself?

sleepingpup · 16/07/2020 17:13

Apologies @Isotope456 you didn't say that.

that horrible quote was @lifeafter50

SpongeCake23 · 16/07/2020 17:37

@Chochito why should I stay at home, when I’m saying I will be wearing a face covering?! I’m just not happy about the way non mask wearers are being attacked. Even if it’s a genuine reason. And made to feel shame. I do have panic attacks, so I will find it incredibly difficult.
So you’re saying if my panic attacks stopped me from wearing one, I shouldn’t go out? Oh and btw I don’t have to stay st home, as we don’t need to wear them out in the open air.

yeOldeTrout · 16/07/2020 18:10

I'm sick of whinging by the blinkered pro-mask brigade, that's for sure.
Ok, you won, now put a sock in it.

HeresMe · 16/07/2020 18:17

I have been wearing a mask on public transport when I should, however it doesn't mean I like or want to wear one,but judging Mumsnet I think some people really like wearing them.

If we didn't wear them

I am sick of the mask shamers go on Twitter there is idiots taking pictures of people ect , the Stasi is well and alive. And the trousers and pee picture one people keep posting it doesn't even make sense.
