I'd preferably like a reusable one. Does anyone have a link?
Thankyou.

I’ve been looking at this. We need both adult and child ones. (Not for regular use but for appointments etc.)

Bupkis · 12/07/2020 13:59

Ok, I've just ordered a 'nano mask' from www.masksuk.com someone on a shielding thing on Facebook recommended them, I'll let you know what it's like when it arrives.

Like you, we mainly need one for appointments and if we need to go into town. (Ds is shielding)

I've just got cotton ones from Etsy.

user1489844432 · 12/07/2020 17:02

I am not an expert but believe you need FFP2 or FFP3 for proper protection

DameFanny · 12/07/2020 18:13

I've been making cotton ones for self and family - good and breathable, easy to fit. The shaped ones look better, but the pleated surgical style are a little breezier in the heat.

Know anyone with a sewing machine?

Bupkis · 12/07/2020 20:23

@DameFanny - I'm up for having a go at making some with dds, if you have a good pattern you could link to please. I'm guessing we'll need a few for the coming months.

EnlightenedOwl · 12/07/2020 20:25

Hi you really don't need one x

Bupkis · 12/07/2020 20:31

@user1489844432 I'll look into that.

@EnlightenedOwl - as I'm asking for recommendations I obviously don't agree. When I went to hospital recently I was told I had to wear a mask, I believe it is safer for everyone if we wear masks and dh wants to provide them for the people he works with (who want to wear them)
...hence asking for advice.

Oh bless you EnlightenedOwl, channeling the power of disbelief and specialness against the global pandemic

@Bupkis re patterns, I've been using the Craft Passion for shaped - www.craftpassion.com/face-mask-sewing-pattern/ and this sort of thing for the pleated - A friend has been making these ones - which come out very elegantly - she makes two at a time so she can have different fabric front and back

There's a ton of patterns around, and if you look at YouTube you'll see all the tricks for sewing them quicker.

Just trying to save you some money x

Bupkis · 12/07/2020 20:56

@EnlightenedOwl - jolly nice of you, but without a mask I wouldn't have been able to visit my mum dying in hospital or attend her funeral, and appointments for my son will be very hard, so I'll crack on with the masks.

Thankyou @DameFanny I'll let you know how I get on!!

Good luck!

labyrinthloafer · 12/07/2020 21:00

Watching this thread, had a minor tantrum today when making some! Was thinking maybe I should just buy instead.

Ok it's your time/ money to waste

DameFanny · 12/07/2020 21:15

What went wrong @labyrinthloafer? I've made ALL the mistakes, can I help?

ohthegoats · 12/07/2020 21:16

Enlightened Owl = misnomer.

IncrediblySadToo · 12/07/2020 21:19

@EnlightenedOwl

I see you're still at it! Your views are >desperately struggling to find something moderately polite as fucking batshit, seems a bit rude< but Christ on a bike, when are you going to accept it's not all a hoax?

And even if it was, there are places you are not permitted to enter without a mask, so telling people they don't need one, is ridiculous.

WingingItSince1973 · 12/07/2020 21:22

I have made my own. Quite easy if you have a sewing machine and basic skills. I downloaded a free pattern after alot of research and its a made to measure one so fits me well. I have also purchased disposable ones from b&m as they are selling adult and children's ones reduced price now.

WingingItSince1973 · 12/07/2020 21:25

Also its compulsory in some places here in the Midlands. We have dentist appointment for dd next week and we have to wear one. Went to opticians last week for a repair to glasses and it was the rule too. Plus now shops are easing their social distancing rules i feel its important now as people seem to be acting like its all over and done with.

dementedpixie · 12/07/2020 21:30

Mandatory in shops in Scotland too as well as public transport and other enclosed places.

Ffsnosexallowed · 12/07/2020 21:34

Enlightenedowl is right, you don't need a mask you just need a face covering. For pp recommending ffp2 or ffp3 mask - where do you suggest op gets hers fitted??

dementedpixie · 12/07/2020 21:37

I think EnlightenedOwl is saying you don't need to cover your face at all rather than saying that it's not just masks that can be used

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 12/07/2020 21:42

Quilters cotton is thick but still breathable. The bbc sewing bee have posted free patterns online.

labyrinthloafer · 12/07/2020 21:46

I just can't get the mask : elastic ratios correct for the different sized heads in the house!

I am going to try one of the ones where the elastic is in a channel rather than sewn on as I can adjust it after trying on?

Some of it was just user error though as I sewed a whole side incorrectly, cried, cut it up into pieces and put it in the bin Blush

BareGrylls · 12/07/2020 21:47

EnlightenedOwl pops up on every thread pouring scorn on anyone who takes covid seriously. Seems to think it's all a hoax. Getting very repetitive.
Face covering are compulsory to get into a hospital or GP surgery. Ive made a few and bought some disposable ones.
So far my experience is that pure cotton is the most comfortable.
