Which mask?

I'd preferably like a reusable one. Does anyone have a link?
Thankyou.

Enlightened you're becoming a caricature now.

My husband has had a procedure in hospital and a dental appointment. Both required masks and it's sensible to plan for when masks will be even more necessary.

I'm looking for the impossible - a mask that you don't even know you're wearing with amazing filtering capabilities. I hate wearing all the masks I've made or bought, but I'll just have to get used to it.

Baaaahhhhh · 13/07/2020 16:34

As noted on another thread, I have had to order children's ones as my head/face is small.

I did have a question. Wales is stating "three layer". Now I am not in Wales, but I have a variety of two and three layer masks, and the three layer ones are very heavy, I much prefer the two layer.

How is anyone going to know how many layers in your mask? I'm not using filter either if I have to wear a mask which I've only had to do in the office so far.

MarcelineMissouri · 13/07/2020 16:47

@Baaaahhhhh can I ask where you ordered children’s ones from for yourself? The ones I’ve ordered so far have been too big for me but I’m worried children’s ones will be too small!

Bupkis · 13/07/2020 17:12

Thankyou everyone for all the suggestions. It us really helpful, especially when certain types will suit different people's needs.

I don't really get the shiteyness about it, when I had to go into hospital they said if I had my own face covering to bring it, if not they would provide.

It just seems to make sense to have some.

This is Mumsnet, you don't give people kisses - especially if they can't be arsed to mask up beforehand!

bupkis thank you for starting this thread. I live in London and would like to take the kids on some day trips over the summer which will involve public transport so a mask is compulsory. I’ve tried a couple from amazon and local supermarkets but perhaps due to unfortunate genetics/sticky out ears they all look ridiculous and don’t seem to fit very well.

Has anyone tried any with adjustable ear elastic / straps or got a suggestion for how you stop them pulling your ears forward? The league times on delivery for some products means it might be September by the time I find something affordable that works!

Sunsage · 13/07/2020 20:13

Sorry I'm just jumping on here for ideas for reusable masks as I've just been using disposables and I really feel so wasteful.

Do the fabric masks need to have a part for a filter or is the fabric alone enough protection?

DameFanny · 13/07/2020 20:15

Thinner ear elastic is better - I find 3mm flat - which is about 4 ribs - is best. You should be able to get some online for about a quid a metre - less if you're buying bigger lengths - and replace the elastic on a non fitting mask.

DameFanny · 13/07/2020 20:18

Sunsage - most of the protection is for the other people around you, so 2 layers of cotton is OK. 3 is better, so you can wedge a square of kitchen roll or that blue paper towel between your mouth/nose and the mask if there isn't a filter pocket.

But IMO the 2 layer mask that you wear regularly is always going to be better than the 3 layer mask you avoid because it's uncomfortable.

Which mask?
LEELULUMPKIN · 13/07/2020 20:27

I'm flying on Wednesday so have been on the look out for something comfortable.

Tried a few but the best for comfort and not steaming my specs up, it fits really snugly and has a nose adjuster is this one......

www.ryman.co.uk/reusable-face-mask-camo-print-1

Which handily matches my camo travelling trousers!

They have them in store as well as other designs/sizes online too.

goose1964 · 13/07/2020 20:28

I've bought some from here www.myoddballs.com/products/copy-of-4-x-face-coverings-bold-bundle they're really comfortable and I have no problem with my glasses fogging up. They're also in sizes so you can buy smaller or larger ones depending on the person wearing them.

LEELULUMPKIN · 13/07/2020 20:29

Also meant to say, it's really soft organic cotton.

Sunsage · 13/07/2020 20:39

Thank you Damefanny 😊

RunningNinja79 · 13/07/2020 20:45

I've just ordered some from Ebay for the family. Haven't paid a fortune, just hope that they are OK.

Personally I'd rather not wear a mask, but if it means we can get through this crap quicker (hopefully) then I will.

MarcelineMissouri I have two types that fit myself and my teen girls the best. La Satoria, childrens sizes, are good, heavy masks, quite expensive £15, but good for public transport, we had to get them for a funeral Sad. Other lighter ones, I have bought some from a local seemstress, £10, who uses three layers, but one layer is silk, they are lovely. For fun prints I have bought from Mabel and Mui, £5, they are one size, but small. They are cheaper and two layer, but well made and postage is reasonable.

I notice my local village tailor is now open, and had made some, selling for only £4. I think I will try some from him too, maybe he will fit them for me Grin.

MarcelineMissouri · 14/07/2020 10:02

@Baaaahhhhh thank you. So the ones from Mabel and Mui fitted you fine? I randomly had an ad from them appear on Facebook and thought they looked quite nice x

missclimpson · 14/07/2020 10:10

I make three layers including a pocket for a filter (we use kitchen towel). I use patchwork fabric (bought on Amazon) for the first layer which I stitch to a piece of plain white cotton (old pillowcase). Turn that inside out and top stitch on a white cotton pocket for filter. I make the channels for elastic, add a nose wire and top stitch that in place. With cutting out and pressing it takes about an hour and I can make them to fit.
I totally get that sewing is not for everyone!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 14/07/2020 11:22

It's not about whether anyone knows!

Well it is really as some people might not wear 3 layer masks and I was wondering how it would be policed!

Carlislemumof4 · 14/07/2020 12:23

@MarcelineMissouri I've bought a number from Mabel & Mu for myself and family.

I have found though they're sold as standard size (apart from the petite sized pug design I've bought for my youngest), different prints have been sized slightly differently. Which is great as I've given the slightly smaller ones to my teen and older children, the wider ones for myself and DH. I'd say they're easily adjustable with the ear elastics though and all could fit my wider face or teen daughter who has a narrower face.

MarcelineMissouri · 14/07/2020 13:37

Great, thanks. I think I’ll try them!

Stircrazyschoolmum · 14/07/2020 15:00

LEELULUMKIN Thank you for the Ryman’s tip. I popped down and bought three - two patterned ‘Cool mask’ and one black ‘ediom’ brand.

This might be helpful to those looking..

I have a very narrow nose so the patterned ones didn’t fit so well.. I couldn’t get the nose wire to stay put so it kind of dug in under the eyes and the ear elastic loops were a bit loose. They might work for my teen DS though and felt light and soft to wear. The black one with adjustable ear straps fitted perfectly and has the benefit of a filter insert, but no nose wire. The material is soft but felt slightly thicker therefore prob warmer over time. The former are washable at 30 degrees, the latter hand wash only.

I guess it’s all personal preference but hope this might help someone!

Carpetdweller · 14/07/2020 16:03

Stircrazy I think they need to be washed at at least 60C to kill the virus.

dementedpixie · 14/07/2020 16:07

Surely the detergent will kill anything, the same way as soap kills the virus on your hands - you don't wash them at 60⁰C
