I'd preferably like a reusable one. Does anyone have a link?
Thankyou.

@labyrinthloafer Ive made several using the elastic channel method as I think sewn in elastic might come loose, works best on shaped patternsand is easy to adjust.

EmmaStone · 12/07/2020 21:55

I bought so,e from Gap in one of their instore promotions (I notice they're now doing family packs with large and small sizes online). I've also just ordered 20 from Baukjen which were good value. I wanted a stack of them so I wasn't washing constantly.

Menaimum · 12/07/2020 21:56

I downloaded the Olsen pattern. I use very densely woven cotton for the body, hair elastics for the ears, insert paper coffee filters for each use. I made a channel to insert and remove an aluminium strip for the nose fitting so that it is fully washable at 60c. I've made slightly smaller ones for DD and larger for DH.

DameFanny · 12/07/2020 22:56

Oh woe re the elastic! Yes, my first ones were too tight, taking the measurements from smaller Asian heads to our family size 9s didn't go well. I'm making everything with channels now, so elastic can be replaced if/when hot washing kills it, and generally putting 9 or 10 inches each side that can be knotted by the wearer to wherever is comfortable

SunflowerProsecco · 12/07/2020 23:03

I wonder if there is any cross over between anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers. They would appear to have a similar reasoning behind their choices.

EnlightenedOwl · 12/07/2020 23:06

The GP surgery and dentist will provide you with one. I'm genuinely amazed people have time to sit piddling about like this for something of no benefit

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 12/07/2020 23:09

I like Lori Nunemaker’s mask pattern. It’s free.

I hope enlightenedowl doesn’t need a hospital or doctors appointment anytime soon as a face covering is compulsory in all of them as with opticians and dentist waiting rooms. Without a mask I wouldn’t have been allowed through the door for my two hospital appointments this week!

Well given the NHS can't be arsed to do very much at the moment, unlikely
rosie39forever · 12/07/2020 23:11

Also the hospital I attended wouldn’t provide them if you don’t turn up wearing a face covering you’re not allowed through the door.

Vickmo · 12/07/2020 23:59

I have Cambridge masks, I really like how they fit as I wear glasses so sometimes have issues with them steaming up. I think they have a couple of week wait though to receive them now.

thinkpad1 · 13/07/2020 01:27

I'm an intensive care nurse, you only need to wear ffp3 masks when there's risk of aerosol generating procedures - patient being intubated and put on a ventilator, accidental disconnection from said ventilator etc. there is no need for joe public to wear ffp3 masks for any other purpose plus you need to be fit tested to make sure the masks actually fit your face and do not leak. A general face covering is fine however PLEASE do not be like these people I see out shopping who pull the mask on and off their nose/mouth/chin constantly and who do not wash/gel hands between touching things and touching their face Envy

drigon · 13/07/2020 01:56

I got a pack of 2 on Etsy from PartyUnlimited. They are cotton, double layer, with an elasticated side for the chin and a wired bit to fit around the nose. Big plus is that they are so well-fitting that they don't steam up glasses unlike other types I have bought before. They are also washable. Very good IMO.

baumwolle · 13/07/2020 02:12

Gap is now selling them - I find the elastic much more comfortable on these than other options I've tried, and they have nose wires

Bodoni · 13/07/2020 07:07

I ordered 2 of the expensive Nano Masks from www.masks.uk - they’re skimpy little things, didn’t even reach my chin, let alone go over it. The website says they stretch (so I didn’t order up a size) but they don’t. And they don’t accept returns. I’m quite cross about this because their website is so convincing and that was £25 for nothing. I hope yours works for you, Bupkis. Now using pleated cotton masks with pockets and 3-layer filter off eBay.

I've ordered these. We have cheap ones from ebay too but these looked quite good

Jerble · 13/07/2020 07:26

I’ve been using ones from Elle - they have adult and children’s sizes and are comfortable. Don’t steam up glasses. My children didn’t want to wear them but once they were on, they were absolutely fine with them.

M1 for children, M2 for adults and teenagers.

Gap now sell them.

I have the fabric ones from vistaprint, fit well and have adjustable ear elastic and mild over the nose, I find I can wear them for quite a long time without the need to fiddle with it.

Aragog · 13/07/2020 09:36

Hi you really don't need one x

Well I do if I want to use public transport, go to a hospital appointment and various other scenarios.
When on holiday next week I will need one even more.

So actually yes, I really do need one.

As may the op.

Aragog · 13/07/2020 09:43

The GP surgery and dentist will provide you with one

No they won't. Or certainly not all will. And why should they when it just a adds extra cost to the nhs - when it's fairly easy to provide your own.

And the Nhs ARE seeing other non Covid patients and have been throughout. I've had 3 nhs appointments for non emergency treatment in the past four months - go and hospital. My mil was seen quickly by a and e in May though it was easier to take her ourselves than wait for an ambulance. My mum has had a non emergency minor operation recently. My FIL was treated and care for for end stage cancer at the start of this with exceptional care. My elderly nana was also treated for non Covid end of life care for a month during this in May.

Op - We have home made ones by a friend.
And then we also have a neck gait or style too which has filter pockets, as they are a bit easier to wear if needing them for a longer time. They also seem to cover better and are a nicer fit.

Strangling enough I didn't have to waste much of my time finding and ordering masks, so that wasn't an issue either

cologne4711 · 13/07/2020 16:20

Hi you really don't need one

The government disagrees (and not before time). Transmission is reduced by about 70% if everyone wears a mask.

And what's with the x ? This is Mumsnet, you don't give people kisses Shock Grin

knittingaddict · 13/07/2020 16:21

Watching this thread, had a minor tantrum today when making some! Was thinking maybe I should just buy instead.

I can empathise with this labyrinthloafer. I'm an experienced sewer. Made curtains, cushions, clothes, the lot, but tried various versions of homemade masks a couple of months back and could have cried. Kudos to all those makers out there.

cologne4711 · 13/07/2020 16:23

I wonder if there is any cross over between anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers. They would appear to have a similar reasoning behind their choices

Not wearing a mask is even more irrational than not wanting vaccines. There is some risk attached to vaccines, otherwise there wouldn't be a vaccine damage act. But there is zero risk attached to wearing a mask for normal healthy people. It may not work in some cases, but it can't hurt you.

timeforawine · 13/07/2020 16:24

@EnlightenedOwl Masks are mandatory where i am to visit the doctor, go on the bus, go to hospital so i have a reusable one just in case, cost £5.99 plus £3.50 for some filters to go inside it, hardly bank breaking.
