I'd preferably like a reusable one. Does anyone have a link?
Thankyou.

Just putting soap on your hands won't kill the virus, you also need to rub and rinse.
I think it was WHO that said 60C for masks, but I could be wrong!

dementedpixie · 14/07/2020 16:16

and even if the virus isn't killed, it will be rinsed away.

Carlislemumof4 · 14/07/2020 16:29

I wash my cotton masks on a short 40 degree cycle, usual non bio washing powder, with other laundry. I put the masks in one of those net zip bags you get for washing bras so the elastic ear loops don't snag on other clothes.

Agh! Don't believe the 'failed to post so retry' message Smile

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 14/07/2020 16:48

We bought these from ELLE
They are really comfortable and they make kid and adult sizes

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/07/2020 09:15

I think they need to be washed at at least 60C to kill the virus.

I won't be doing 60C wash for a couple of masks, they'll go in with my normal load at 30 or 40. I only do a 60C for towels and bedding and that's not every week. (I have plenty of sets and they get changed regularly and wash when it's convenient to have the washing machine going before anyone thinks I don't have clean bedding and towels!)

Ok...my review of nano mask from masks UK - feels too small and not 'grippy' enough around face, Agree with everything @Bodoni says in her post. Will definitely have to get stitching, but dh would still like to buy some for the people at work, so that was an expensive mistake!

I hand wash mine, so nowhere near 60oC. Just a scrub/rub and a wash in soapy water..... like with hands!

Stircrazyschoolmum · 15/07/2020 14:38

I think if you dry them in full sunlight and have enough for a couple of days gap in between each wear then there’s a pretty low likelihood of any virus remaining. My mum (a carer) recommends presoaking in Milton if you are very worried.

I guess I’m wearing a mask to protect others if I’m pre-symptomatic as opposed to protecting me. I wouldn’t expect a non-medical mask to protect me regardless of how it was washed..

RandyLionandDirtyDog · 15/07/2020 14:50

I’ve sewn loads of face masks and I use a close weave cotton print for the front with a soft cotton gauze for the inside.

I looked at a few patterns but then made my own which I adjust to suit the user. So children’s, skinny faced and round faced adults. I bought a good supply of 5mm elastic so still using that.

I don’t bother with nose wires as they’re not that great in my experience. Instead, I’ve bought some double sided skin tape on a roll for DH who wears glasses. It stops them steaming up really well.

You only need about 2 inches or less of tape and it attaches the mask firmly to the nose without irritating the skin.

I wash my own at 40° but then iron on a steam setting.

But....... and this is where nothing is ever clear. So we all wear masks, great, I am in agreement. BUT you have to wash them after every wear. Why? We aren't being asked to wash our clothes every time we go out. If masks are protecting everyone else, not the wearer, I still don't get the whole, take it off carefully, put it in a bag, wash at 60c, iron....... when no-one is doing that with their clothes.

Bamaluz · 15/07/2020 15:53

Because you don't wear other clothing over your mouth and nose.

Juo · 15/07/2020 16:26

RandyLionandDirtyDog Do you make the shaped ones or pleated?
I find they don't fit snugly without nose wires but I find it hard to fit them in shaped masks (which I prefer). Tape sounds a good idea.

Stircrazyschoolmum · 15/07/2020 16:57

Further update! My black Asda ones arrived.. (£2.50 for a pack of 2) first impressions, light weight and comfy. I think they are two layer (not certain) no filter pocket. Claim to be washable at 60 degrees!

draughtycatflap · 15/07/2020 17:02

I found this in my husband’s bedside drawer and was considering wearing it to Sainsburys tomorrow. I tried it on and it fits although smells a bit musty...

Which mask?
Lipz · 15/07/2020 19:24

Does anyone know which reusable ones don't suck into your mouth when you're talking? The one I had in today spent more time in my mouth. Is there a particular material I should be looking for.

Stircrazyschoolmum · 15/07/2020 20:54

draughtycatflap I double dare you to wear that to Sainsburys!! Grin

Toucancan · 15/07/2020 22:37

If you're a sewer, the Florence face mask pattern has been good for me. I've made several tweaks over time for a better fit but generally I think it's one of the better ones I've tried.

HarmonicAnalysis · 16/07/2020 00:27

The Mabel and Mu ones mentioned above are really good quality - very well made and should last a long time. I got some after seeing a recommendation on another thread here a few weeks ago. There's a pocket for a filter if you want one, but I haven't used that myself. The ear elastics thread through slots down the sides of the mask but are not attached to the fabric, so could easily be replaced if need be.

And practicalities aside, they look nice on! (Instant improvement to my face! Grin)

nonevernotever · 16/07/2020 08:47

I've made a couple of dozen from the Olson pattern using quilting cotton and hair elastics. You can adjust the fit really well just by adjusting where you sew the elastic in. There's also a child size pattern for people with smaller faces. Think the tutorial was the sew she can one.

peridito · 16/07/2020 09:22

I'm looking for re useable masks made out of a material that does not shed fibres .

I don't know why but the skin on my face seems able to feel just one fibre strand and to itch .

Any suggestions ?

peridito · 16/07/2020 09:27

@FedUpAtHomeTroels what sort of fabric are the Elle masks made out of ?

I can't see from the pics on line .

thank you
