Face coverings mandatory in public

So it would look likely that the government are about to announce the mandatory wearing of masks in all enclosed public spaces. Apart from schools however, where Covid will know not to infect you Hmm

Where did you hear this?

Redolent · 10/07/2020 19:06

Yes, posted this in another thread. Johnson sported wearing one for the first time today.

mandatory in shops in Scotland now

Twickerhun · 10/07/2020 19:06

Source?!?

Puppybum · 10/07/2020 19:08

Bit late now isn't it

BarefootHippieChick · 10/07/2020 19:09

Should have made them mandatory before restaurants and pubs opened.

PatriciaHolm · 10/07/2020 19:10

Johnson in #peoplesPMQs (!)- " He said: “We need to be stricter in insisting that people wear face coverings in confined places, transport and shops where they are meeting people they don’t normally meet.”

Nothing official yet.

borntobequiet · 10/07/2020 19:10

Ha! Just makes him look more shifty. But yes, good idea.

Keepdistance · 10/07/2020 19:53

Maybe they are finally realising with it still circulating people dont want to shop.
2 pubs shut in burnham on sea already. But where else had those infected people been? Most likely in a supermarket etc too.
Either way imo masks in schools too. You literally dont know where people have been. (Pubs/raves/supermarket/hairdressers/parents hcp/a&e for an injury/on a plane/in an airport).
Reducing all cold/flu would really help as would save isolating and testing.

No. In fact now is the time preventative measures will have the biggest impact in keeping transmissions low.

Masks are in the same category as hand washing so whilst it doesn’t guarantee zero transmission they significantly reduce it.

It does seem unbalanced that they’re not required in schools but any prevention is better than none.

lljkk · 10/07/2020 20:20

Where is the proof that handwashing reduces transmission?
I've never been convinced on that one.

AnxiousAlpaca · 10/07/2020 20:33

Oh I agree with it being mandatory but should be in schools too. Teachers aren’t cannon fodder

Neither are sex workers. So im guessing certain things are off the menu there too.

Cornettoninja · 10/07/2020 20:52

@lljkk

It’s just basic hygiene generally. I don’t really know what to say if you’re not already convinced by the benefits of hand washing.
DebLou47 · 10/07/2020 20:56

Boris did not say that he said it was not mandatory in China and Taiwan and people chose to wear them and said if us not our culture that said I think we will inside until treatment or vaccine

Hmmph · 10/07/2020 20:57

In March it became apparent how many people don’t wash their hands, even after using the loo. They admitted it.

I don’t care if hand washing helps with Covid, it helps with so many other things.

lljkk · 10/07/2020 21:00

Basic hygiene to stop norovirus and random bacteria sure... but where is the proof that handwashing makes much difference to respiratory viruses?

Itsarattrap · 10/07/2020 21:01

Puppybum

Not really, knowledge is improving all the time.

EasterIssland · 10/07/2020 21:05

I’m Spanish and they’re compulsory outside all the time and inside and I find it’s bonkers. Many of the current outbreaks are in family get together and also in the fruit collectors (there is a huge outbreak at the moment in Catalonia) because the poor living state this people are living at.
Outbreaks won’t happen because I’ve gone to a shop and crossed with someone that is ill. It’s because I go to family get together or to the pub and social distancing is completely forgotten.

So not sure how this is going to help unless when getting together with others we’re willing to wear it all the Time.

lljkk · 10/07/2020 21:10

In Spain do the tourists have to wear face covers all the time they are outside, too? Even when swimming or in the clubs? How do they handle restaurants visits?

Friend is planning a cycling holiday in Mallorca in October; she can't cycle up the mountains while wearing a face covering. I don't think she knew. She's been dragging her feet about getting refund or taking vouchers. She will want a refund if she can't go cycling.

EasterIssland · 10/07/2020 21:11

Compulsory right now all the time in Catalonia and Baleares apart from when doing exercise and in a restaurant/pub. Apart from that compulsory or face a fine even if you’re a foreigner

EasterIssland · 10/07/2020 21:11

Btw in the clubs compulsory.

WanderingMilly · 10/07/2020 21:15

To be honest, I do think masks should be compulsory indoors for public places. Outside in the fresh air, spaced apart, less of a problem...

Indoors with my own family? Not needed, but if I go to another household, yes, I wear them with extended family too. But they can hardly make that compulsory, who's going to check in our homes?

peasaregood · 10/07/2020 21:19

Fucking ridiculous.
makes no scientific sense at all
