Face coverings mandatory in public

So it would look likely that the government are about to announce the mandatory wearing of masks in all enclosed public spaces. Apart from schools however, where Covid will know not to infect you Hmm

Hope they become mandatory but there ‘s some public education about how to put them on and take them off. With what I’ve seen this week the public need educating about what bits they should cover, eg not the neck only.

Carlislemumof4 · 11/07/2020 01:44

Government messages like this have started popping up in my social media feeds.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 11/07/2020 02:05

Oh no I have autism and can't wear them Sad.

Guess I will just have to send DP to the shops from now on.

TheClaws · 11/07/2020 05:31

Fuck any shop that expects me to cover my face and make it hard to breathe.
Fuck any shop that makes it hard to communicate by muffling speech, and removing lip-reading and non-verbal communication.

You're being a tad histrionic here, BOGOF. Personally, I've never had an issue understanding anyone wearing a mask. Ever. And it does get somewhat clammy wearing one, but I'm know it won't last forever. (And I'm not a prima donna.)

DomDoesWotHeWants · 11/07/2020 07:37

I think it's a logical step as people seem to have forgotten about social distancing.

sleepingpup · 11/07/2020 07:47

I've got some cotton ones and people seem to hear what I'm saying fine.

MarshaBradyo · 11/07/2020 07:49

but there's little evidence to support touch transmission

Most of the evidence supports touch transmission as the primary method of infection;

I’m glad you clarified. I did think this was a fairly known easy win.

Icanseeclearlynow12 · 11/07/2020 07:50

I personally would be happy if they are made mandatory. I wonder how it would work in pubs, I know some countries you have to wear one apart from when you are sitting at the table.

Sarahlou63 · 11/07/2020 07:52

@EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire - why can’t you wear a mask if you have autism? Genuine question.

redcactus · 11/07/2020 07:55

I came to Italy on Thursday. Had not worn a mask before as didn't think it would be very comfortable breathing. Amazed at how easy it's been to get used to it. Everyone carries them around, puts them on and off to go into shops, transport etc.

It's not the most hygienic way to wear them but I think people feel safer and it feels more respectful of others. I'll be wearing one when I get back to the U.K. now as they're really not that big a deal. Much worse in the heat and the Italians working in kitchens seem to be managing.

AgentProvocateur · 11/07/2020 07:56

Mandatory here in UAE when out in public. You can take them off when your food/drink is served, but everyone puts them on to go to the loo etc. £600 fine for not wearing one, and mandatory in schools for over 6s when they go back. We’ve been wearing them since the start of the pandemic, and it’s just second nature now.

AgentProvocateur · 11/07/2020 07:57

Ps it’s 43 degrees here today and we still manage!

phlebasconsidered · 11/07/2020 08:03

So everyone should wear masks except teachers and schoolkids. I'll be in the unenviable position of teaching a full class all day, eating with them, wiping down their desks, and being in a room with them all day without ppe or a mask. I currently do this now but with less children and it's already terrifyingly hard to manage. Let alone when i'm back to 30 plus kids. But when I pop to lidl on the way home -a space about 10 times as big as my classroom with only the same amount of people in it - I must wear a mask.

This government are really showing what they think of education staff very clearly. The DFE advice is ridiculous.

flowerpotsandrain · 11/07/2020 08:04

I'm austistic and wondering why that means you can't wear them too? My glasses steam up so i can't see, i want to scream because the feeling is fecking awful, but my being autistic doesn't stop the masks from fitting my face like a person without autism :/ When you suffer from sensory overwhelm it's actually really nice to be able to hide in a mask a bit. It eases my ASD anxiety for others to wear them too, alongside wanting to follow rules and be respectful and polite.

flowerpotsandrain · 11/07/2020 08:06

@phlebasconsidered have visors rather than masks been considered for schools?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 11/07/2020 08:06

We decided we were not going into lockdown, then France and Spain did it. The British people who were scared shouted ‘look at what they are doing - we should do that as well’.

Now with masks it’s the same thing. People have seen Americans and Asians wearing them on the telly. Then they found out that lots of people were wearing them in France and Italy. ‘Look’ they shouted ‘those people are wearing masks and when I went to Tesco this morning I was the only one doing it’.

It’s the the exact same thing. Sturgeon has recognised the Govts weakness and exploited it. Now she is first out of the blocks and Johnson can’t help but follow her.

We will wear masks until we realise everyone else has taken theirs off. There is no thinking or science here, it’s just like a panic in a crowd. We see someone else shout out and run away, so we do the same.

EvilPea · 11/07/2020 08:08

After watching that stupid woman in America ranting about masks, I started wearing one a little bit more.

I have a washable patterned one.
But I also have a condition that also causes my nose to run. That makes it tricky!!!

I do know a few NHS workers who are really struggling with it, as it’s so painful after working 12+ hours with one on.

phlebasconsidered · 11/07/2020 08:08

No, the guidance from the dfe says none are necessary. Apparently schools are safe! Quick, everyone get to school now! They defy the laws of biology!

falcon5 · 11/07/2020 08:11

A family member teaches in Singapore and was really shocked when I said no masks in schools here. All the children where masks in his class and he wears a visor so they can all see his face fully. He says it's much better than video teaching from home and if it prevents another "circuit breaker" lockdown that's great. Over here, 3 year old and 7 year old not worried about masks at all - I think we thought they might be but nah, not phased.

TakemetoGreeceplease · 11/07/2020 08:13

I will never wear one ever. I have a brain and I understand science and medicine and it is totally unnecessary

Since you're so knowledgeable on science matters can you explain why surgeons, anaesthetists and theatre staff wear masks if they're useless? I presume you would be happy to have an operation where none of the staff wore masks?

DomDoesWotHeWants · 11/07/2020 08:17

I will never wear one ever. I have a brain and I understand science and medicine and it is totally unnecessary

Right there is proof you don not have a brain that functions properly.

sleepingpup · 11/07/2020 08:18

*We decided we were not going into lockdown, then France and Spain did it. The British people who were scared shouted ‘look at what they are doing - we should do that as well’.

  • And look how that went. 200,000 preventable lives.

And look how it's going in Arizona, Texas and Florida.????

TurqMelon · 11/07/2020 08:23

Nobody’s asd is the same as anyone else’s so it makes no sense to ask a person why they can’t even if you’re autistic yourself and can wear one as sensory difficulties affect us all differently

mathanxiety · 11/07/2020 08:24

But at a societal level we're not way off normal ranges of deaths

Well you will be even further past normal ranges of deaths than you are now if people won't wear masks, @BogRollBOGOF.

And quite honestly, I hope there will be a zero tolerance policy for 'low level disruption' in schools. Teachers are literally risking their lives to stand in front of classrooms.

My local high school (US) will be completely online for the coming year.

SpillTheTeaa · 11/07/2020 08:24

I will never wear one ever. I have a brain and I understand science and medicine and it is totally unnecessary

Please tell this to all the hospital/care workers how your brain and your understanding of science means they do not have to wear a mask. How idiotic of them. Is your brain made out of tin foil? People like you will be the reason this virus will linger longer than it needs to.
