Face coverings mandatory in public

So it would look likely that the government are about to announce the mandatory wearing of masks in all enclosed public spaces. Apart from schools however, where Covid will know not to infect you Hmm

Hard to buy elastic In The shops

Argggghhneedclarity · 10/07/2020 22:05

I hate wearing them, but I think it's a small price to pay for a bit of extra protection for all of us.

CKBJ · 10/07/2020 22:07

I think it’s a good idea even if it only offers a small amount of protection. I also think if they become compulsory in shops they should become compulsory in all indoor places including schools. Young children at a local school to me (not private) have shirt tie and blazer as part of their uniform. When it was introduced 6years ago it was argued the younger children would be pulling at their ties and be uncomfortable. Yes maybe initially but they got used to it and the same would be for a face covering.

Hercwasonaroll · 10/07/2020 22:07

I still can't understand how walking past someone in a supermarket without a mask on is more dangerous than being in a classroom with 30+ students for an hour.

If someone can explain that to me then I'll get on board.

Government school guidelines say masks aren't necessary in school.

Legoandloldolls · 10/07/2020 22:08

I made my own washable masks. Not everyone has that skill and there was more demand than availability.

I prefer my home made mask, I couldn't wear a disposal one by choice for long. They get clammy and stinky.

I'm really interested to see how Christmas shopping will pan out. With masks and queuing to get into shops. I might start now 🤯

I would guess that one they reason they might mandate masks is to do away with queuing altogether. No longer a need for 2m, and I can’t imagine people queuing in the cold rain during winter.
Callipygion · 10/07/2020 22:11

Shame Johnson’s bloody face mask isn’t air tight.

mathanxiety · 10/07/2020 22:12

@Itsarattrap it actually is a bit late.

Those countries that made masks mandatory from the start have had successful campaigns against the virus.

Even those states in the US which made masks mandatory during their lockdowns and where mask wearing has been part of the reopening strategy have seen lower numbers of infections than neighbouring states.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 10/07/2020 22:18

@Woodhill you can get facemask elastic here fabricguild.co.uk/product-category/crafty-bits/elastic/ I got this and it's lovely and soft and comfortable on ears.

I've made a few masks in different styles, I hate them all so if anyone has a good pattern for one that doesn't feel like it's suffocatingly hot please post it.

mathanxiety · 10/07/2020 22:18

@Onedayinthefuture,

Everyone found the masks a bit jarring for the first week, but babies and young children have coped perfectly well with the sight of them in my neck of the woods.

Young children over age two are obliged to wear masks in the US state where I live.

I told my family last week that i wont be doing ANY Christmas shopping this year for adults or kids so not to reciprocate.

I hope this isn't the assumption, Redolent. We wear masks and maintain a 2m distance while queueing (or 6 feet as it's known in these parts) and indoors too. Stores are still enforcing maximum occupancy rules.

You don't need elastic. A long cord or long shoelaces will do if you use a pattern that involves threading the cord into seams at each side of the mask and then tying the top ends of the cords at the back of your head and the bottom ends at the back of your neck. You end up with a mask that is gathered at the side so it fits over your nose, mouth and chin.

BogRollBOGOF · 10/07/2020 22:42

Fuck any shop that expects me to cover my face and make it hard to breathe.
Fuck any shop that makes it hard to communicate by muffling speech, and removing lip-reading and non-verbal communication.

Masks are an exercise in sanctimonious virtue signalling. Any minimal benefits are undone by all the bad fitting, and fiddling around and false security making people less cautious about their behaviour.

Masks can fucking well fuck off. They offend me on a primal level. Maybe its residual trauma from emergency surgery, because when I see the surgical masks out and about, I get that adrenaline surge of fight or flight. They are not nice cosy little security blankets, they can be very distressing items for many reasons and have no place on our streets.

We've got this far with social distancing and hand hygiene. I can abide with that.

mathanxiety · 10/07/2020 22:43

It seems a lot of people here believe the mask is to protect you.

The mask is to protect other people from you.

Yes, it works to protect you - if everyone else wears theirs.

But the primary aim of wearing a mask is to keep you from spreading your own germs into the air. Asymptomatic cases have been shown to constitute the majority of those tested in many locations.

If you cut a FQ in half and make one in the disposable flat folded style. Then have the straps go over your head in two loops around your whole head its comfy and huge.

My goes to my ears and from nose to right under my chin. Nice and roomy which is good for air flow

mathanxiety · 10/07/2020 22:46

The UK is up there with the US so far as the two least successful states where dealing with covid is concerned.

If over 60,000 deaths from covid19 is ok with you @BogRollBOGOF, fill your boots.

onedayinthefuture · 10/07/2020 22:54

@BogRollBOGOF absolutely agree!

I think the government are thinking people are too scared to go out so mask wearing might make them feel more comfortable to get out and about to spend money. This is absolutely not about reducing the risk of the virus.

openplankitchen · 10/07/2020 22:54

If they are mandatory we won't be going out to spend our money in shops etc. Won't go anywhere for fun where we are forced to wear one.

I'd happily spend money on line etc but it would be a huge shame for businesses

onedayinthefuture · 10/07/2020 22:56

@mathanxiety the media would have you believe that. The press hate the UK and the US and absolutely any excuse to rubbish the two is given at any time.

Redolent · 10/07/2020 22:57

I guess we will start seeing tantrums like this from some people:

m.youtube.com/watch?v=VMay7ns86nI

savagebaggagemaster · 10/07/2020 22:58

I'm another one who thinks teachers and kids should be wearing masks. Yes, there will need to be exceptions, but the majority should care enough to protect those who cannot wear them. There needs to be a culture shift towards mask wearing across the whole UK. We can all learn from healthcare professionals how to safely put them on / take them off, etc. I would be much more likely to venture into the shops, cafes, etc if masks were mandatory.

sleepingpup · 10/07/2020 23:04

hey are not nice cosy little security blankets, they can be very distressing items for many reasons and have no place on our streets.

god what is the problem? It's a little mask not an iron lung.

Some of the comments on here remind me of the
"it's just flu" type of comments that flew round on here in early March. Followed by "washing hands won't help it's a virus" and "you don't need hand gel" and "why is everyone making a fuss?"

If you've got mental health issues with wearing a mask @BogRollBOGOF. No probs! You don't have to wear one.

Can not get over the fuss tbh.

onedayinthefuture · 10/07/2020 23:07

@Redolent what I see there is bullying and sadly we'll see more public shaming as has gone on since this whole thing started. I can totally see why people were put in stocks or women dunked in water in past times.

sleepingpup · 10/07/2020 23:10

The press hate the UK and the US and absolutely any excuse to rubbish the two is given at any time.

So the UK and the US are not the least successful countries in dealing with Covid? The press just made it up. Because"they hate" them.

🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🙄
