So it would look likely that the government are about to announce the mandatory wearing of masks in all enclosed public spaces. Apart from schools however, where Covid will know not to infect you Hmm

@lljkk

“Where is the proof that handwashing reduces transmission?
I've never been convinced on that one.”

People , especially children , sneeze - cough - and snot in their hands. Then they touch things.
It’s how flu spreads, norovirus - and most infections- bacterial , amoebic , or viral (apart from the plasmodial malaria) - can spread.

This was discovered by A Dr Semmelweis, observing that post birth infections were far lower on the midwife lead wards in a maternity hospital. Because the midwives washed their hands. (That’s the abridged version)

@ peasaregood

“Fucking ridiculous.
makes no scientific sense at all”

Wrong. Just wrong.

Supermarket yesterday, yes I counted, out of 14 mask wearers, 11 were mouth only or on the chin. I've seen people pull them up and down for a fag, wear them like sunglasses on their head, wear them to walk to the supermarket and then put them round their chin to talk to a friend in the shop. To me that's causing more damage than it solves.

Shop today... Everyone who was wearing one was doing so correctly bar two people, and one of those was a young girl.

Excellent video from a dr and mask fitter showing that most masks are useless against corona , apart from a properly fitted theatre mask ..that is only effective for 2.5 hours and must be thrown away

Plenty of studies showing that masks protect people around the wearer

BigChocFrenzy · 15/07/2020 22:12

We've been wearing masks in Germany since mid-April

Staff & pupils could optionally wear masks from 4 May and they are now mandatory in school corridors etc

No drama
Guided by science, as knowledge develops

Unfortunately, the UK govt keeps doing things later than most other developed countries, as it did with lockdown

BigChocFrenzy · 15/07/2020 22:15

Masks are an important part of the process of reopening after lockdown,
while avoiding infections rising again, especially this Autumn and winter

Also necessary are a reliable track & trace system, with mandatory isolation for those found infected

BigChocFrenzy · 15/07/2020 22:21

Comparing the COVID deaths with a high of up to estimated 50,000 flu deaths one year the flu vaccine wasn't effective ....

COVID deaths in the UK were with lockdown

To get some idea of the difference with / without lockdown,
compare Sweden with its neighbours, culturally similar and also with v low population density

Covid deaths / million population:

Sweden 550
Germany 109
Denmark 105
Norway 47

lockdown works:

. Sweden has 5 x deaths / million of its neighbour Denmark, culturally similar

. Sweden has nearly 12 x deaths / million of its neighbour Norway, culturally similar

. Sweden even has 5 x deaths / million of Germany - despite Germany having 10 x their population density

. The UK without lockdown would likely have suffered many times more deaths,
especially because of vastly higher population density than the Scandinavian countries

@Dowser

You know the masks are not there to protect the other people around you don't you?

Your protection comes from the other people wearing one.

sleepingpup · 15/07/2020 23:12

well that should have read

the masks are there to protect the other people

For anyone going to the peaceful gathering re masks and other issues the venue has been changed to Hyde Park , Sunday 19 th at 1pm

SPEAKERS CORNER FOR PEACEFUL GATHERING RE MASKS AND OTHER ISSUES

SUNDAY 19 July at 1 pm

Apparently police weren’t happy about Trafalgar Square.
If you’ve shared it please can you amend it

It’s all been rushed together before Parliament goes down for the summer and the mandatory mask law has been brought in

Please check in with Leah butler smith on fb for latest updates

Cornettoninja · 16/07/2020 17:46

@Dowser her profile pic on Twitter has reduced an impressive amount of issues into one t-shirt.

Tbh she just sounds contrary rather than someone to take seriously.

The grouping is usually Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark & Netherlands. Sweden not so different from Netherlands per million. I wonder what the numbers will be like in mid 2021.
