Face coverings mandatory in public

So it would look likely that the government are about to announce the mandatory wearing of masks in all enclosed public spaces. Apart from schools however, where Covid will know not to infect you Hmm

But I wear a seat belt in a car, and if I am hit by someone else they have insurance. Precautions are taken. I am being told 'you dont need any protection. Everyone else does, but you dont need it because teenagers may need to see your lips'.

neutralintelligence · 11/07/2020 14:19

There are some people with short memories. Tens of thousands of people died of this virus in this country in the last 3-4 months and the virus is still around and only going to be spreading more now. Not all the dead were old people or people different to you. Wearing a mask is a very small inconvenience for most people, but with a disproportionately large benefit to the whole population in terms of viral spread. Just put on some kind of face covering if you can't tolerate a mask and do the right thing.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 11/07/2020 17:34

I really hate the attitude that we’ve all been manipulated by the government and that people are stupid to be cautious. I’m not clear what the government’s agenda is then.

If you don’t know anyone who has died from it or seriously affected, then lucky you.
I personally know people who have died and some who have recovered but still suffering with difficulties 3 months later. I’d like to avoid it for myself and family.
I know the chances of having a serious car accident are higher but I try to take care when I drive. I don’t think ‘yeah I could die anyway so I’ll take this corner at speed and won’t bother slowing down when crossing this junction as the cars are likely to miss me’
I believe we still need to take precautions with this virus. We may get it anyway, but I’d rather try not to.

Hercwasonaroll · 11/07/2020 17:39

But even with all the car precautions you take, your chance of dying is still higher than dying in a car accident compared to dying if you get coronavirus (assuming you're under 40).

bluefoxmug · 11/07/2020 17:45

I'm a bit bemused about the reluctance to wear masks/face covering tbh.
it's not a big deal for most people.
just do it.

lljkk · 11/07/2020 17:59

I don't even know anyone who has been tested for it.
Ok, that's a slight lie. There's a gal I used to chat to for about 2.5 yrs who I last saw 15 or 16 yrs ago. We're in touch on FBk. Her daughter had to go to hospital for a procedure & while there had a cough (the DD is very prone to chronic mild coughs) so friend & her DD got tested.

They were negative. I'm not really sure it counts as 'someone I know got tested' though.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 11/07/2020 18:35

Just put on some kind of face covering if you can't tolerate a mask and do the right thing.

Some people can't tolerate anything on their face.

No, my elderly father had an Angina attack today because the store was too hot and he couldn't breathe through his mask. It should never be compulsory to wear one

Mathanxiety

Itsarattrap it actually is a bit late.

Those countries that made masks mandatory from the start have had successful campaigns against the virus. **

Even those states in the US which made masks mandatory during their lockdowns and where mask wearing has been part of the reopening strategy have seen lower numbers of infections than neighbouring states.

Oh I see what you meant! I thought you were saying there was no point in wearing a mask.

Yes, absolutely too late for the poor souls who died. But better late than never. Ever increasing evidence that they do play a small but nonetheless certain part in preventing onward transmission.

Some, N95 certified and those with a HEPA filter also afford a degree of protection to the wearer.

Unfortunately, masks without filters, such as homemade t-shirt fabric, do very little either way but are still better than nothing because they do capture larger droplets.

megletthesecond · 11/07/2020 20:08

They didn't advise face masks back in March because there wasn't enough for front line workers and the general public. It was nothing to do with science.

Now masks are available they can ask the public to wear them. And most people should wear them.

I'm the anxiety ridden freak who bought some at the start of February.

lljkk · 11/07/2020 21:28

I bet a shortage of PPE could easily happen again if public stockpile enough masks.

sleepingpup · 11/07/2020 21:44

The government have done a number on scaring the public.

Pity I didn't know that at the funeral @Hercwasonaroll

I wish I'd had you telling me that then. It might have hurt less.

How arrogant.

Hercwasonaroll · 11/07/2020 21:55

I'VE HAD A RELATIVE DIE TOO. I can still see that living like this for much longer is not a good thing. We have no idea if masks really will help. Based on my observations of people wearing them (round chins mainly) they probably won't.

The facts are that for lots of us, coronavirus isn't that dangerous. There are plenty of other things out there killing people. I've had another relative die from not being able to access NHS treatment due to corona shutdowns. So don't come on here telling me about people dying.

sleepingpup · 11/07/2020 22:05

God this reminds me of the days of "flu kills just as many"

You know so much @Hercwasonaroll

How dare I question what you are saying. "And based on what ' you've seen ' masks are not going to work.

Have you told the WHO yet?

Hercwasonaroll · 11/07/2020 22:10

Yes wearing a mask on your chin will protect you from coronavirus. Definitely 100%.HmmHmm

I just know how to evaluate risk and understand scientific research. The jury is most definitely out on masks, especially badly worn ones.

Derbygerbil · 11/07/2020 22:42

@Hercwasonaroll

I want things to get back to normal, or as close to normal as it can be, as soon as possible..... The absolute worst thing we can do is act as though “it’s all over”..,, as whether or not you think it’s a load of all nonsense, that’s not going to stop the Government taking action if cases rise, and I really don’t want to be under a local lockdown or such like.

And as for it being overblown, why would the Trump-loving Governors of Republican US states are rolling back business opening and mandating mask-wearing with their ICUs filling fast if they could avoid it - that would be absolute last thing they would want to do.

sleepingpup · 11/07/2020 22:48

Nope. never worn a mask on my chin. 🙄
@Hercwasonaroll

No not all juries are out on masks. Like Germany for example. But then maybe you're not the only one that can evaluate risk and understand scientific research.

Quote from @Strictlybakeoff on a similar thread.

*We use the synthetic control method to analyze the effect of face masks on the spread of Covid-19 in Germany. Our identification approach exploits regional variation in the point in time when face masks became compulsory. Depending on the region we analyse, we find that face masks reduced the cumulative number of registered Covid-19 cases between 2.3% and 13% over a period of 10 days after they became compulsory. Assessing the credibility of the various estimates, we conclude that face masks reduce the daily growth rate of reported infections by around 40%.

Study showing how masks can help. There are no studies showing masks cause any harm

Hercwasonaroll · 12/07/2020 05:17

There are studies showing how the virus can get trapped in masks causing people to catch the virus who wouldn't have without a mask on.

The mask doesn't protect you, it protects everyone else. So if you wear it on your chin, not on your nose, then you're not helping. Thats the point. Most people aren't wearing them properly.

SJK34 · 12/07/2020 05:30

People apparently didn’t know how to wash their hands properly either. It can be overcome.

sleepingpup · 12/07/2020 08:20

No I don't agree "most people don't wear them properly ". Very sweeping statement.

Probably a few don't.

Hercwasonaroll · 12/07/2020 08:24

@sleepingpup You've obviously not been out where I live then.

Supermarket yesterday, yes I counted, out of 14 mask wearers, 11 were mouth only or on the chin. I've seen people pull them up and down for a fag, wear them like sunglasses on their head, wear them to walk to the supermarket and then put them round their chin to talk to a friend in the shop. To me that's causing more damage than it solves.

sleepingpup · 12/07/2020 08:40

Clearly I don't live where you do @Hercwasonaroll .

GalesThisMorning · 12/07/2020 11:01

Once they are mandatory we will all wear them, same as the rest of the world. We will be fine with it. The histrionics seen on this thread will transfer to some other issue. Some people need to moan and complain. The rest of us just want to get on with life.

MisDescamisados · 15/07/2020 21:30

“The ever increasing obsession with masks as they become ever less necessary is just odd, like people need a comfort blanket of rules as others are rolled back.”

And of course , in schools it’s no worse than nits , and anyway kids can’t catch it , spread it, or die from it*

*sarcasm. I’m done with people replying on calls to expertise (such as “I’m a PhD”) and other assorted logical fallacies to camouflage their deep terror of microns of cloth/paper.

They work.

MisDescamisados · 15/07/2020 21:32

Anyway , dear “people won’t wear them properly” fam, hows that an excuse for you ?
Probably sounding like someone’s mum here (weird huh?) , but would you all jump off a cliff ...as the saying goes?
