Will the scheme persuade you to go out?

All those MPs must be happy that they can have long boozy lunches and dinners for half price!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/07/2020 22:05

@PlanDeRaccordement won't make any difference to them as they charge it to expenses anyway Wink

mightbealittlebitmad · 08/07/2020 22:18

I probably won't use it unless I manage to wrangle a child free Tuesday evening and someone to go with. However, as I work in hospitality it benefits me because the more people coming in spending money mean I'm more likely to keep my job long term.

Every customer I've spoken to at work so far is absolutely loving being out again. I asked one lot how they felt about the safety of things and they said they were really happy with the way things were spaced out and the measures we've put in place to protect them and the staff.

It's quieter than it used to be but I'm hoping over the next few weeks things will pick up a bit and we can get back on track a bit. We certainly need to with all of our functions cancelled until next year, it worries me how many of us they will need to keep once furlough ends.

BoingBoingyBoing · 08/07/2020 22:30

Yay! Another ill-thought out boneheaded initiative. A really shit groupon voucher enouraging people to mix indoors. Fucking morons.

HateIsNotGood · 08/07/2020 22:44

Yes - it will. It's like Food Stamps for Restaurants - I just need to make sure my preferred eateries are signed up. Given Kids get the Vouchers too you'd have to be a right miserable bastard not to think of ways to spend it.

Maybe invite some deprived people to the Supper (whilst your kids eat some chips or bread maybe?) and be a bit creative before you churn and bray.

okiedokieme · 08/07/2020 22:54

Quite likely but not many places around here cost under £10 for a main unless it's Wetherspoons of course

cathyandclare · 08/07/2020 22:57

We will definitely use this- quite excited having cooked every damn meal for months on end!

elliejjtiny · 08/07/2020 23:10

No. Trying to eat out with an autistic 6 year old while socially distancing isn't my idea of fun.

HateIsNotGood · 08/07/2020 23:27

It isn't ellie at all, i know, autistic ds18 used to be autistic ds6 and vouchers to eat out were the sort of things that 'other people' could use.
Maybe that's why I can see their use now - those little rays of sunshine that keeps some of us going.

I do know, that when I might spend mine, I'll probably be dining alone - which is better than not dining at all.

Discobar · 08/07/2020 23:28

Isn't this the same as "Meerkat" meals!

bumblenbean · 08/07/2020 23:53

I’d like to in theory but don’t think I’d find it massively enjoyable at the moment. Giving your details when you arrive, the niggling thought that someone in there might have covid (ok unlikely but not impossible). I love eating out but think I’ll probably wait until things have settled down a bit more (I may be waiting a long time Grin)

But if you booked over phone would you not give your details

No it isn't because the government is paying for the discount not the restaurant. The aim is to encourage people to eat out at quieter times to increase restaurant turnover and hopefully allow them to stay in business.

Hopefully our favourite restaurants will sign up because we generally eat at small independents or very small independently owned restaurant groups like bundobust who don't generally do the chain restaurant type deals but are usually cheaper in the first place because they don't set their prices on the assumption that most customers will be using a voucher.

Pixxie7 · 09/07/2020 06:34

I don’t really think this will make much difference to people, it’s only in participating restaurants and up to £10.

userxx · 09/07/2020 06:38

@Pixxie7 I can get a lovely meal in my local pub for about £10, does that mean it would be free? Genuine question!

BarbaraofSeville · 09/07/2020 06:44

Its half price up to a maximum £10 discount on food and soft drinks, so a £10 meal will be £5, £20 meal £10, £30 meal £20 etc.

Pixxie7 · 09/07/2020 06:46

Usserxx@ I really don’t know but I doubt it, good luck though.

emilybrontescorsett · 09/07/2020 07:00

No it's not for me.
My son has been told he is being made redundant in 10 days from the restaurant he works in. This won't help him. The restaurant rely on weddings, proms and large events.
The government haven't done anything to help in this regard.

Livpool · 09/07/2020 08:03

They could have done it for £25 each at least - cover a meal in a pub.

I am still upset about my £500, which I had mentally spent

SockYarn · 09/07/2020 08:13

It was never intended to be a "free meal". It's a 50% contribution, capped at £10 per head. The idea is to get people spending.

Stellakent · 09/07/2020 08:21

Gosh, what a lot of misery on this thread. I've lost my job but if this makes it possible to treat the family to a meal out after a difficult few months then I'm going to grab the opportunity.
