Eat out to help out

Will the scheme persuade you to go out?

OP posts:
skylineblue · 08/07/2020 18:29

I would like to, but generally we only eat out at weekends, when DH can come out with us for lunch. DD is a toddler and eats early, so weekday evenings are no good. I suppose I could take her out on my own for lunch one day, but it's harder work on my own so it's not as much fun. I'm not bothered at all about the risk - we'll probably be eating out every now and then at weekends even without a discount.

AnyFucker · 08/07/2020 18:33

Too right I will

IrisPurple · 08/07/2020 18:34

We'd love to, but we'd need to sort babysitting. My parents have offered, but not to do bedtime as she's clingy and that's too much contact. It can be 9pm before she settles some nights so couldn't go after bedtime. Tuesdays and Wednesdays she's at nursery so not really safe if she has germs on her clothes and hair.

So if somewhere is open to serve us at 5.30pm on a Monday so we can be back for bedtime then Yes! Grin

LaurieFairyCake · 08/07/2020 18:36

I will make a point of going as honestly even though I hate the government I do want to boost the economy

UnaCorda · 08/07/2020 18:38

Good grief there are some ridiculous comments on this thread. Independent restaurants are closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays?? Mondays, perhaps, but not 3/7 of the week!

PirateWeasel · 08/07/2020 18:42

Really hope the small local independents go for the scheme. We have no chains out here in the back of beyond, and it would cost us a good chunk of the amount we'd be saving on the food to drive to and park in our nearest city!

AlphaJura · 08/07/2020 18:45

Same as a lot of people really. We would never normally eat out on those days, so the saving doesn't really justify spending more money when things are quite tight anyway. Maybe if we were on holiday (which were not going to be). I don't much feel like eating out in a pub or restaurant at the moment anyway.

BlueBrian · 08/07/2020 18:46

Surely all that will happen is people will just get a meal on the discount days, and not bother with days they would have gone out normally, so net gain to the pub/restaurant is zero.

SockYarn · 08/07/2020 19:25

Well no.

Because space will be limited because of social distancing. So restaurants will be less busy on a weekend. Offering an incentive for people to visit on less busy times spreads the trade across the

gingganggooleywotsit · 08/07/2020 19:40

No. My Dh has a one man ltd company and didn't get any help from the government therefore we are skint and need to save every penny!

mum2jakie · 08/07/2020 19:46

We're on holiday in August so highly likely to take advantage of this deal. There are some miserable buggers on this thread!!

HermioneWeasley · 08/07/2020 19:46

Bring it on

Anotherdayanothernight · 08/07/2020 19:56

£10 is not a great offer anyway, and what about all shops, how will they regain customers?

ragged · 08/07/2020 20:02

YES we are talking about it now. But probably will turn into a maximum of 3 outings.

XiCi · 08/07/2020 20:26

Some really strange replies on this thread. There are alot of small, independent restaurants in my area and most are open 7 days a week and are usually full even midweek. I'll definitely be taking up this offer and doing everything I can to support these local businesses.

back2good · 08/07/2020 20:33

ManCity, you haven't a clue.

It isn't 'easy' to feed children on benefits right now; everything has gone up.

I am middle class, but the school I teach in has a lot of children from families who are genuinely struggling to feed and clothe their growing children properly. It's awful. And the children know it, too, with their too small shoes and tight clothes that their parents can't afford to replace. They eat every scrap of the lunches we have in school at the moment.

whatnametopick · 08/07/2020 20:40

My local independent is family run and closed sun, Mon and Tues. So it only leaves Wednesday and it's a small place, probably maximum of 5 tables now so will definitely be oversubscribed so I won't bother.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/07/2020 20:41

No. My gut feeling is I won’t be comfortable going to clothes shops/restaurants etc until I am back working in my workplace. At that point I will be exposed to maximum risk (lecturer, teaching adults) so I won’t be fussed about other places.

I was in the post office today and found it so stressful! Y

LovingLen · 08/07/2020 20:46

I wonder if places like Heavenly Desserts will be included, I quite fancy going for a yummy dessert and drink

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/07/2020 20:49

Sorry but parents should be able to feed children easy, a lot of it is people can’t budget properly or plan meals

There are people who are on minimum wage/ zero hours contracts or who have actually lost their jobs and been forced into debt by this virus - it's got nothing to to with not being able to budget, or plan meals. And whole areas and industries are going to be faced with mass redundancies. No chance of another job.

The middle classes are the ones most likely to have weathered this because they are most likely to have had professions where they could work from home, and also to have had some savings to cushion them. People on low incomes don't ave these luxuries.

Show some compassion.

The same government that fought long and hard to deny food vouchers to poor kids is now giving EVERYBODY a £10 food voucher

ShootsFruitsAndLeaves · 08/07/2020 20:59

I think it's great. £10 won't touch the sides at Gordon Ramsay, but say you would have spent £70 on a meal for 4 in somewhere casual, now that's £35, what's not to like!? Nice food you can't get at home, government pays half the bill.

ShootsFruitsAndLeaves · 08/07/2020 21:01

It's not a food voucher, it's a specific stimulus to get people eating out in restaurants. It's still going to be cheaper to eat at home.

BubblyBarbara · 08/07/2020 21:23

Totally. All those poor impoverished hospital consultants and senior managers on the minimum wage.

Oh right, so when you're out clapping for the NHS you're really only doing it for nurses on the breadline and not every member of the NHS who keeps the entire system running? Or you probably don't clap I'm guessing
