Will the scheme persuade you to go out?

Is this the same government who are saying don't eat at work Confused

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/07/2020 16:48

@Saucery I know how viruses are transmitted, I'm just no more scared of coronavirus than I am any other virus and I don't let them dictate how I live.

Pregnantandstressed24 · 08/07/2020 16:48

Definitely won’t be an incentive for us. We will happily stick to our weekly takeaways to support small businesses.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 08/07/2020 16:48

Btw - those bemoaning that the discount only applies to eating in rather than takeaways, don’t worry you’ll still benefit from the reduction in vat

TheFairyCaravan · 08/07/2020 16:48

Nope.

A couple of weeks ago this Govt were telling us they couldn't give £90 to the poorest families to feed their children over the Summer yet now they want to pay us all to eat in restaurants. They can fuck off.

Parkandride · 08/07/2020 16:48

Definitely, hope some good restaurants and independents sign up. No desire to be crammed in a nandos but would happily visit local places after work

ThreeTimes · 08/07/2020 16:52

businesses rarely pass on the drop in VAT to customers

I think it's a good idea (the eat out voucher) but we never ate out a lot anyway and this doesn't make me think 'yes I should do!'

we only really dine out for special meals - like birthdays/anniversaries. We have booked one restaurant in August for a family meal because we missed 3 birthdays in lockdown but that's it. Can't see any other reason to eat out after that.

PlanDeRaccordement · 08/07/2020 16:53

No.
It’s a reckless and misguided measure to try and save a few businesses but at the expense of exposing more to Covid= more deaths.

I’d ratter that Sunak had just given £625m in grants for these businesses to extend staff furloughs than force them to do a death defying dance macabre of calling in staff to serve customers lured in by 50% off food discount.

lifesalongsong · 08/07/2020 16:55

We don’t eat out mon to wed

Monday to Wednesday. So basically for either shiftworkers, or the non working population (or families without kids). Awesome. No, won’t use

We’d only eat out once a month anyway so not much use to us

What a load of fun sponges have gravitated to this thread. Why can't you go out on Mon - Wed? Bizarre, what has whether you have children got to do with it? It lasts a month, why wouldn't you want to be able to eat for half price?

SockYarn · 08/07/2020 16:57

They can all join my new girl band:

Nippy Nicola and the Fun Police.

Spikeyball · 08/07/2020 16:57

It's eating in and not takeaways because they want to get restaurants back open again and people who work in them such as waiting staff, off furlough.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/07/2020 16:58

I work and I'm a single parent with a child, I'd eat out Monday-Wednesday after work and so would my friends. Some people are so miserable.

BlueBrian · 08/07/2020 16:59

All that will happen is all the other discounts that are normally offered will be scrapped, so the net gain to the consumer will be zero.

Mrskeats · 08/07/2020 17:02

Agreed waxon
The fun police are out in force.
It's a tenner each so it is good. Lots of snobbish looking down on the hospitality sector.

LocalHobo · 08/07/2020 17:04

SockYarn love your positivity.
I ate out for the first time last night - independent vegetarian - and was very impressed with the distancing, pre-ordering etc. they had implemented. I had a great experience and toasted those of us who have survived 2020 so far. I can't see how supporting business whilst enjoying good food increases my, or my fellow humans, risk of transmission any more than buying supermarket food or traveling to work does.
It will be interesting to see which eateries participate. I think it is fairly inspired, out of the box, thinking.

SockYarn · 08/07/2020 17:05

All that will happen is all the other discounts that are normally offered will be scrapped, so the net gain to the consumer will be zero.

Well that surely depends on what type of restaurants sign up? Some of our local independents don't offer discounts on quiet days, and the ones that do make it very difficult - so they offer something like a 2 for £20 deal but the dishes you can choose from are extremely limited.

This is a voucher you can use against any food and soft drink. It's more flexible.

But again, the government could announce that everyone's getting a 2 week holiday, all expenses paid, to a destination of their choosing and some people would still find something to moan about.

InFiveMins · 08/07/2020 17:06

Yep. It's just me and my OH at home and we enjoy eating out so will make use of this. I think it's a good move.

BlueBrian · 08/07/2020 17:06

Oh look the Tory shills have turned up to try a flog this stupid idea.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/07/2020 17:06

Nope.

If we've got less money coming into the house (which we have) we're not going to be spending on meals out.

SockYarn · 08/07/2020 17:09

Not a Shill. @BlueBrian, Rishi Sunak isn't going to call you up and demand you book a table at your local gastro pub. If you don't want to use it, don't.

TheFlis12345 · 08/07/2020 17:12

If some decent local independent places take part I would, but not for Pizza Express and places like that which always have a discount anyway.

Spied · 08/07/2020 17:14

No, I'd not eat out.

mollokoy · 08/07/2020 17:15

lol this thread 😂 😂 😂

grisen · 08/07/2020 17:16

Love eating out Monday - Wednesday normally as it usually means fewer people about, and I work shifts AND nights and usually have a meal out BEFORE my shift...

Yes I’ll probably even eat out more than normally. I’m dreaming about the lunches I’ll be able to have with my friends!

Fortyfifty · 08/07/2020 17:19

Yes. DH and dc home all summer and I am wfh so all days merge in to one andcwe'd happily go out to eat in a pub garden on a Monday - Wednesday. I'd prefer it if it were quieter and I'd only go if it were somewhere I'd normally go but I'd appreciated a meal for 2 adults and 2 teens being £40 cheaper. Our jobs are safe and we've not been out for a meal for months so we would spend money on that.
