Will the scheme persuade you to go out?

OP posts:
SockYarn · 08/07/2020 15:56

I would have gone anyway, but will definitely be going now!

Unless nippy Nicola and her SNP fun Police puts a stop to it.

RoobyMyrtle · 08/07/2020 15:57

It just sounds like it will be the same discount you can wangle anyway if you look online for vouchers. Plus it will likely be for chains rather than the independents I actually would like to support. I can't imagine it'll be enough incentive to get me out of the house. I'm saving any cash I save during lockdown for a greenhouse & more plants. Assuming my husband's university job isn't axed.

Herja · 08/07/2020 15:57

No. I can't afford to eat out generally anyway so 50% off is still 50% more than I can afford. I don't buy any food out, a £5 lunch out happens every 3 months or so, this will have no effect on my spending at all.

Davodia · 08/07/2020 15:57

Still too expensive even with £10 off. I might be tempted if it was a totally free meal. But tbh I’d probably still end up deciding it wasn’t worth risking my life for.

whenwillthemadnessend · 08/07/2020 15:57

Yes I'd happily go to a well run place and spend.

SockYarn · 08/07/2020 15:58

The much reported "£500 shopping voucher" was an idea from a left-leaning think tank.

It was never government policy, or even spoken about by anyone in government.

Brendabigbaps · 08/07/2020 15:59

It’s like a shite version of tastecard!

BarbaraofSeville · 08/07/2020 15:59

But the great difference between this scheme and usual 2 for 1 vouchers type deal is that the government is paying for the discount, not the restaurant.

Hopefully they'll work out a way to administrate it without it being a pain for either the customer or the restaurant.

We like to eat out and don't mind going on weekdays when it's quieter so will try and take advantage of this a few times

Orangeblossom78 · 08/07/2020 16:00

it wasn’t worth risking my life for bit dramatic

A bit? More like ridiculously dramatic.
RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 08/07/2020 16:04

Nope. But then, we don't eat out a huge amount to begin with so we're not really the target audience for it.

I'm not sure how it will help the smaller places seeing as they're all working at a reduced capacity so getting people through the door isn't necessarily the issue there. You can only sell so many meals (unless they are extending it to takeaways).

Brieminewine · 08/07/2020 16:05

Yep, we eat out about three times a week anyway so that would come in handy!

BlueBrian · 08/07/2020 16:05

The idea of eating junk food while surrounded by potential virus carriers still doesn't appeal even with a government discount.

VettiyaIruken · 08/07/2020 16:05

Nope.
It's a non essential expenditure and my finances took a big hit due to lockdown.

lockdownalli · 08/07/2020 16:06

@Jrobhatch29

Where's my £500!?!?!😂
I know!!!!! I had already spent it in my head!!! Grin
Helenj1977 · 08/07/2020 16:07

I'd bought a new tele and pushchair in my head 😂

Newdaynewname1 · 08/07/2020 16:09

Monday to Wednesday. So basically for either shiftworkers, or the non working population (or families without kids). Awesome. No, won’t use

Saladmakesmesad · 08/07/2020 16:09

Nah. Eating in a space with other people actually grosses me out slightly at the moment.

TumbledGlass · 08/07/2020 16:10

Yes I’ll definitely use it, if my local independent places sign up.
We’ve been ordering food from the local pub every weekend for the last few weeks. It’s felt like a real treat, I’m keen to support them further and 50% is a bonus.

Stellaris22 · 08/07/2020 16:11

No. Couldn't afford to (or want to) eat out anyway. Eating out is stressful with a small child, why spend money to deal with the stress of eating out.

The £500 would have been useful and actually benefit a lot of people. What use is this to people who have lost their jobs?

emmathedilemma · 08/07/2020 16:11

Unlikely and I agree with @Glittertwins that a lot of independent restaurants don't open at least Monday.

Picklypickles · 08/07/2020 16:13

I don't know, we aren't a family that eats out a lot as it is - we can't afford to! Might be nice to have the oppurtunity to be able to eat out somewhere for a change but I'll only use the vouchers if I can use them in our local family-run restaurants and cafe's - although I can imagine it might be difficult to book a table in these little places if you can only use the vouchers on Mon/Tue/Weds.

lilgreen · 08/07/2020 16:15

We don’t eat out mon to wed.

Purplewithred · 08/07/2020 16:16

Hmm. It might just tip the balance assuming it's a local independent with a decent menu offering it. Eating out is the one thing I have really really missed (and cooking every night has been my biggest resentment.)

mouse70 · 08/07/2020 16:18

Of no use to me. Do not go out for meals or go to pubs even before pandemic and so will not be changing just to make use of this. Now had it included take aways I would have used it!!! I suspect many people will not be using it so will not cost as much as predicted.
