Eat out to help out

Will the scheme persuade you to go out?

OP posts:
mollokoy · 08/07/2020 16:18

Oh yes I definitely will!

Not sure where is open on Mondays round here but if the non-Spoon pub is I will be there.

ZombieLizzieBennet · 08/07/2020 16:19

If you have to physically eat there in person, don't think so. I would use it if we could take the food away.

Madcats · 08/07/2020 16:19

Pre-coronas I think we probably ate out 4-5 times/month. A £10/head discount per bill and VAT reduced to 5% from 20% will be a nice treat. I think there is a seafood platter with my name on it!

We've tried to support our local eateries that are doing takeaways/deliveries in lockdown. There has been very little illness in our area (though I am warier now that tourists are coming from far and wide).

I'm looking forward to eating out but I think I'll stay away from the big central places. It will be the little bistros and pubs with outdoor seating for us, I think, though lots were usually shut on a Monday and Tuesday.

AuntieMarys · 08/07/2020 16:21

We would normally eat out 2-3 times a week...we are going out later actually. It will be interesting to see which restaurants are included. If the chains were Cote, Bills Carluccios...maybe.

KatherineJaneway · 08/07/2020 16:21

Yes, I'll use it

SockYarn · 08/07/2020 16:24

Why does it have to be for the non-working population? Eat out straight from work. Working people generally still have to eat on days they're working.

Government aren't subsidising alcohol, so there's no need to get trollied. And it's not just fast-food either, any restaurant can sign up.

Such negativity. Use it, don't use it. But all the moaning about how it will be impossible to use is just ridiculous.

lilgreen · 08/07/2020 16:26

We’d only eat out once a month anyway so not much use to us.

TokyoSushi · 08/07/2020 16:29

Yes, I think we probably will, we eat out fairly often anyway so this will be a good little treat. Will use it with the DC for lunch too.

I hope lots of places sign up!

Spikeyball · 08/07/2020 16:30

No we won't be using it. I'm not risking ending up with having to 14 days self isolating for a meal out.

ginnybag · 08/07/2020 16:31

Quite possibly, yes.

With DD still off, the night doesn't make a difference to me as neither of us drinks enough for it to be an issue an hour later, much less next day, so work isn't a concern.

Pre-lockdown, we probably ate out once or twice a month and had take-out about the same, so odds are we'd shift over to 'out' for all of them, as the discount would cover the difference.

My one restriction would be that I would like to see this only being available to businesses who are UK registered and paying the correct amount of UK tax, rather than offshoring to avoid. This would also have the side benefit of making businesses which are more attractive price wise.

WildSkitty · 08/07/2020 16:32

If it can't be used for takeaway, then no.

Talk about mixed fucking messages.

Do you think the government know that the primary message on their coronavirus page says "stay at home as much as possible"?

I don't want to go to a restaurant and increase my risk of coronavirus, thank you.

TheSunIsStillShining · 08/07/2020 16:32

Really? Chef + x ppl touching the food, waiter touching the cutlery, plate, glasses.... so many options to spread anything - even with the best intentions and not knowing that they are sick.

Than again, we eat out maybe every 5-6 months in normal times....

Legoandloldolls · 08/07/2020 16:34

Yes why not? We will be living with _ dieing of corono for years yet. With four kids in school and dh mixing at work the risk of a socially distanced meal is irrelevant added risk.

Death is rammed down your throat daily so I'm going to enjoy one or two meals out before the next lockdown.and my inevitable ornament untimely death.

Life is short, it's getting shorter too

Legoandloldolls · 08/07/2020 16:36

But no more than I planned for diring lockdown
Two restaurants I miss that's it. It might temp out a few more times.

I'm sure it will be miserable and joyless but I can find out

YonBonnieBanks · 08/07/2020 16:36

It'll be well known chains who are usually based in the cities and thus you have to travel to them after a day of working (including WFH).

No thanks, would rather get a takeaway. Would prefer to eat locally if I were to go to a restaurant but I think I'd hold off for now.

Do you want a side portion of corona?

bilbotoy · 08/07/2020 16:37

I would use it my only concerns would be will they scrap vouchers/deals so actually you're not really saving. And again I prefer independents.

I would have liked to see a VAT reduction in home improvements.

fortmums · 08/07/2020 16:38

Wagamamas ! Local cafe in the park ! Local Greek ! Do you have to eat in or is take out ok ?

HotFlowers · 08/07/2020 16:40

Yes absolutely we will. Wonder when the list of participating pubs and restaurants will be announced.

LadyCatStark · 08/07/2020 16:40

Nope. Monday to Wednesday is no good for us as DH is working harder than ever and by the time he’s finished the last thing he’ll want to do is drive the 20 minutes plus to find any type of eating establishment (even fast food). We’ll pay for it through our increased taxes in autumn though 🙈.

I suppose I may take DS out for lunch in the holidays as I work term time only but I’d take him on a mon- wed instead of another day rather than in addition to it. I doubt many places will pass the reduction on to customers so the most your saving is a tenner each.

Also if savings are on soft drinks but not alcohol then some people who aren’t bothered about drinking (like me if I was able to use the scheme) would have a soft drink and save on a taxi rather than have a few alcoholic drinks 🙈

Saucery · 08/07/2020 16:41

They’re getting really desperate for enough people to catch Coronavirus to achieve their intended herd immunity, aren’t they?
No thanks. Anyone with a basic understanding of how viruses are transmitted wouldn’t be keen.

Handsnotwands · 08/07/2020 16:44

i imagine those who have lost their jobs won't be able to afford to eat out and those who are still working probably wouldn't be eating out during the week

be nice for furloughed people (again)

Cuddling57 · 08/07/2020 16:44

Is this the same government who are saying don't eat at work Confused

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/07/2020 16:44

Yes, I like eating out and I'm comfortable going to pubs and restaurants in the current climate. The only thing stopping me so far is being on furlough and my wage gone down 20% but I've been called back to work so I'm happy to spend money from next month.

SockYarn · 08/07/2020 16:46

Anyone with a basic understanding of how viruses are transmitted wouldn’t be keen.

Anyone with a basic understanding of how many people are actually "out there" with Covid, unaware they have it or selfish enough to carry on regardless, would realise that you would have to be incredibly unlucky to come into contact with one of them.

lifesalongsong · 08/07/2020 16:47

@BlueBrian

The idea of eating junk food while surrounded by potential virus carriers still doesn't appeal even with a government discount.
What a ridiculous comment, if you don't want to go fine but why would you assume it will only be for junk food and by potential virus carriers you mean literally any person including yourself.

This thread is almost exclusively a load of negative moaning minnies, the announcement was made around lunchtime and before the details are known all you can do is whinge about it.

Meanwhile, in the real world normal people are going out for meals, taking social distancing in their stride and thinking, yes, a win win - a cheaper night out for me and a boost to eating out places.
