Leicester facing full lockdown

According to the BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-53206506.
Anyone living there - how do you feel about this? Personally I would feel terribly trapped, almost like I was being punished, like when teacher's used to keep a whole class behind due to the behaviour of a minority.

When you look at a graph like this it's really evident that we're just not coming out of lockdown this week.

Im Beyond pissed off. Me and DH are both WFH full time with a 6 year old. School holidays have officially started, I've cancelled my annual leave this week because I want to be able to take DD to some places. We've stuck to the lockdown, we're bored, Tesco and the local park just are not cutting it anymore!

what the hells going on is no one enforcing the lockdown at all?

I'm not sure they can in practice; if any crackdown was perceived to focus on asian retailers there'd be hell to pay

Chaotic45 · 13/07/2020 19:47

@Puzzledandpissedoff I've heard about the odd person travelling by car being stopped and asked about the purpose of their journey but I think this is very occasional.

Many people are carrying on as if nothing was wrong and no restrictions are in place. Making those who have followed the guidelines feel hopeless.

I know it would be really tough to enforce completely. However, there seems to be very little effort being made whatsoever.

I believe you implicitly, Chaotic, but once again I'm afraid I'm not surprised

Announcement expected later today about what’s happening from Saturday (when current lockdown is to be reviewed).

I’m expecting it will be another 2 weeks at current restrictions really, with numbers although falling, still being significantly higher than anywhere else. Small chance they may release some areas but unlikely as they’ll need to re-write the legislation and I’m sure they’ll not be keen on that.

Mayor of Leicester published another paper last night with more specific data on areas in lockdown. www.leicester.gov.uk/media/186767/measuring-covid-19-in-leicester-15-july-2020.pdf

Suggests that there’s around 10% of the locked down area that should truly be locked down. With the rest of the area not being a concern. Hospital admissions are at lowest since early March and have not increased with increased cases. Also shows number of tests carried out and looks like it’s around 1000 a day. Not sure how this compares with other areas but guessing it’s a lot more.

Chaotic45 · 16/07/2020 15:15

I think you're right @Lolly12.

Does anyone have any idea how we are going to find out about what decision is made? It's a bit frustrating not to be bale to find out what time it will be, especially for people like DH whose work is very dependent on the outcome.

I have mixed feeling about the mayor's public criticism of lockdown. I'm one hand it's good that he is looking at things with a critical eye and not blindly following the government's line, however his blatant disregard is making people feel justified in ignoring lockdown rules.

danni0509 · 16/07/2020 17:29

Relaxing measures for schools when they are on school holiday makes so much sense. 😂

Honestly who's making these rules??

Juanmorebeer · 16/07/2020 17:46

@danni0509 I know what a completely ridiculous thing to say when the school year finished on the 10th. Arrrrrggghhhhh

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 16/07/2020 18:59

I'm in city boundary soooooooo

Her we go again!

Minikievs · 16/07/2020 19:14

I'm now out of it, but I thought it was from now, apparently not til 24th! FFS

Chaotic45 · 16/07/2020 19:23

So I'm confused, despite recording and listening to the briefing several times!

I'm not clear if peripheral areas (ie non city centre and Oadby and Wigston) are free now, soon, or on 24th. I've got friends itching to go on their holiday on Saturday so they are desperate to know.

What did he mean about non essential retail being open on 24th, again this wasn't clear?

I'm getting used to hearing these announcements and then being thoroughly confused. I know they will eventually clarify things, but the initial confusion is divisive, frustrating and not conducive to people doing the right thing (or even knowing what the right thing is).

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 16/07/2020 20:08

@Chaotic45 from the bbc website it seems that the borders will change from 24th July

Leicester lockdown: Measures eased after coronavirus cases drop www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-53416023

I'm about 1 millimetre inside the line according to that map, I can see the border road from my upstairs window.

Now it appears Charnwood and Blaby will be out of local lockdown from tomorrow. Not 24th as leics county council stayed last night and this morning. So hood news for those residents. www.gov.uk/guidance/leicester-lockdown-what-you-can-and-cannot-do

Why can’t they just say what they mean when it’s announced is beyond me. So much confusion, so many businesses left in limbo and holidays being put into doubt. Arghh!

Seashell80 · 17/07/2020 18:44

I live within one of the areas being released tomorrow! The confusion has been ridiculous, how difficult would it have been to say-the county areas will be released from lockdown on 18th but the city plus Oadby and Wigston will be in extended lockdown with a relaxation of restrictions from the 24th!
It's not difficult FFS.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 17/07/2020 18:51

I have to walk past non-essential shops to get to the park but I'm not supposed to go in them tomorrow because I'm only supposed to leave home to go do essential shopping or exercise.

I can however go into non-essential shops on 24th July when the ones in the lockdown area are allowed to open.

Does that sound like madness to anyone else?

Coxie2006 · 19/07/2020 20:42

I hope those who are still in lockdown are coping ok. I too am in Wigston area so know how shit it is.

fantasmasgoria1 · 19/07/2020 20:48

We are on the edge of the zone. Where we are the rates are the same or lower than other areas not locked down so it pisses me off that we are not considered.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 19/07/2020 21:28

I'm just finding the rules baffling that I'm allowed to go to Fosse park for Asda, Sainsbury's, boots, Superdrug, M&S or McDonald's but I'm not supposed to go into river island, primark or WHSmith.

According to the government guidance website

Come 24th July, the shops in the city centre will open but I'm still not supposed to use them because the only reasons someone who lives in the lockdown area is supposed to travel within or out of the lockdown area is for essential shopping, exercise, medical appointments or work.

It's so crazy and Poorly thought out.

Chaotic45 · 19/07/2020 21:37

@TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 I agree. It makes no sense. DH runs a non essential store which can open on Friday. He's really keen to get cracking, but at the same time he is utterly confused because people living in the area are not allowed to shop other than for essential items. It almost seems irresponsible to open?

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 19/07/2020 21:41

@Chaotic45 I'm not sure who is supposed to use the shops, as people in lockdown can't and the guidance says that you shouldn't travel into the lockdown from outside unless it's essential 🤷🏻‍♀️

I completely understand that the economy needs to get going but it feels like a trap to open shops then legislate that people can't use them ????

Seashell80 · 20/07/2020 08:41

It's bloody stupid!

Chaotic45 · 20/07/2020 09:08

@TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 I completely agree. It also makes people managing and working in those shops feel anxious and confused opening their doors in an area deemed to require a lockdown and whet residents are limited to essential travel only.

Are the residents seriously expected not to visits shops which are metres away from their front doors?

I want to scream from the rooftops that this is ridiculous. But there's so much going on atm that unless you're living in this area no one is listening!

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 21/07/2020 22:19

@Chaotic45 Leicester mercury article today on who can use the shops shows its as clear as bloody mud. By this argument from DHSC as long as I go with the intention of buying a cheap pack of paracetamol in boots, it's fine for me to nip into town and have a wander round the high cross. www.leicestermercury.co.uk/news/leicester-news/non-essential-shops-leicester-lockdown-4348877
