Leicester facing full lockdown

According to the BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-53206506.
Anyone living there - how do you feel about this? Personally I would feel terribly trapped, almost like I was being punished, like when teacher's used to keep a whole class behind due to the behaviour of a minority.

@caramac04 thanks for the update. My village is 10 mins or so outside the lockdown area and only one of six local pubs opened up last night. All others changed their opening plans in response to the nearby local lockdown.

What areas have you heard had some difficulty? I haven't seen anything on local media about it......

Lolly12 · 05/07/2020 13:17

That article is really interesting thank you @AlecTrevelyan006
Certainly rings true in terms of what we’ve been told as hospital staff. There has been no significant increase in hospital admissions in the last month. There is lots of aggrieved residents of areas outside the city boundary that have been included in the lockdown. The county council are not releasing data of cases for these areas (due to data protection) which seems strange when they have released figures for the main hotspots. It certainly seems possible the numbers are low in these areas but they’ve been included as a buffer. And as residents in these places have been told not to travel outside the boundary for things like grocery shopping, can see their point as they’re being driven towards areas where rates are high putting people more at risk. I think going forwards for any other local lockdowns it needs to made clear to everyone included exactly why they are, otherwise more trust is lost and appetite to follow the guidance is reduced.

@Chaotic45 I’ve seen something about issues in Market Harborough.. police granted a dispersal order www.leicestermercury.co.uk/news/local-news/dispersal-order-given-police-after-4295204

Also read about a large fight in Blaby, but not sure if this in or out of lockdown area.

caramac04 · 05/07/2020 14:13

@Chaotica, yes Market Harborough as above and also the village of Broughton Astley there was a fight outside one of the pubs.
I believe Blaby have escaped the lockdown; that’s not far from me but I’m in lockdown.
I’m not surprised that where pubs have been open there has been no social distancing, alcohol removes inhibitions. I’m sure I’d be less careful after a few wines in a pub.
Soho looked like a Club 18-30 destination.

caramac04 · 05/07/2020 14:14

Sorry @Chaotica, that was for @Chaotic45

Chaotic45 · 05/07/2020 14:43

Thanks @caramac04 and @Lolly12 . What a shame, but sadly almost inevitable I feel. I totally agree about alcohol removing inhibitions- it's so easy to see how this leads to bad decisions in terms of social distancing.

Friends who work at Glenfield have said they have seen an increase in admissions both there and at adult A&E at the infirmary. The general hospital is being kept 'clean' in terms of no deliberate covoid admissions, so of course no increase there.

There's some right muppets out there!

Any other Leicester posters found this weekend the hardest so far? I get it's because it feels like those of us "In the Zone" have been grounded Grin But yeah, DH and I have been grumpy with each other all weekend, sniping and felt so tired. We walked to a local park yesterday to feed the ducks, even they looked pissed off, all swimming about on their own. Most odd Smile

Yes same here ! I've taken the dogs out a couple of times and done some food shopping but feeling really grumpy with everything and everyone ! I don't really know why as I wouldn't be dashing out to a café or pub anyway !
tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 05/07/2020 20:02

Neither would we! It's so odd.

caramac04 · 05/07/2020 20:03

@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz - yep grumpy as hell yesterday. Not so bad today but I ran and that always lifts me.
It’s the lack of independent choice that bugs me. Also I feel punished for the behaviour of others. I left my caravan however many weeks ago and haven’t been shopping or socialising since then. Others have continually broken the rules and will continue to do so. (greedy sweat shop owners who are exploiting poor buggers who have no choice).
I feel like there is no end to it all.

This is what worries me - when will there be an end to it ? They say another 2 weeks but it could take a lot longer than that if the sweat shops don't close down surely ?? It's so frustrating, we have literally been no where for four months except out to walk the dogs.
I understand these people have no choice but to work in these sweat shops, a lot of them are working illegally so are not able to claim any benefits so are just going to carry on. There was a report of 42 people being found in a three bedroom house and all testing positive. I don't know how true it was but seeing how some of my clients live in shared houses, sleeping in shifts etc I can see how it happens and unless the government tackle the root of the problem this could drag on forever couldn't it?

Babyroobs · 05/07/2020 20:10

I have four teenagers at home also, they have been very good at not going out at all for four months but I can now see their patience wearing thin, they are getting depressed and moody, they need to be out looking for jobs, moving on with things and they can't do any of that. I know it can't be helped but each day this drags on it just gets harder.

Yep! In the lockdown zone by about 1/4 mile here and have really struggled this weekend. I'm bored, fed up, pissed off, and sick of seeing all the "woohoo! We're out of lockdown!" posts from non Leics friends
Catonaroof · 05/07/2020 20:45

I'm also right on the edge of the lockdown zone. I understand shops and pubs having to stay shut to prevent people coming to them from Leicester, but I feel like the fact that I'm not allowed to go anywhere is a real assault on my freedom. I don't know many people locally, but can't join my friends for walks out in the County or further afield.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 05/07/2020 20:48

I think you're right Baby, there needs to be actual action to get to the root of the problem.

In the meantime, I know it's Sunday but sod it, I'm having a glass of wine Grin. Cheers all!

Beatrixpotterspencil · 05/07/2020 21:18

so is anyone allowed to go to work in Leicester?
and why are the sweatshops still running gif theyre illegal?

Lolly12 · 05/07/2020 21:28

I’m also struggling to see an end to it all @caramac04 I’ve read about how much testing they’ve been doing in the community all weekend, 1000s and whole streets, whether they have symptoms or not. I get why, but numbers are only going to increase with the huge increase in tests (8 test centres in Leicester now I think). And with higher or increased positive cases, lifting the restrictions won’t happen.

I think the local Charnwood councillors were pushing for some of the county areas included to be considered for exclusion at next review if numbers were low. But if leics county council refuse to share the figures then I can’t see how this would happen? Gah!

Lolly12 · 05/07/2020 21:33

@Beatrixpotterspencil yes. If you are unable to work from home you can go to work in Leicester wherever you live.

So you’ve got folk from all over coming and going because of work, but no one is allowed to leave the lockdown zone (unless for work or other essential reason). There’s a lot of confusion over ‘social bubbles’, what you can and can’t do and what is classed as essential etc. Lots of contradictory information being published by various agencies over the last week. Doesn’t help.

PatriciaHolm · 05/07/2020 21:36

So far, infections are down - see graph. Need to keep an eye this week but current indications seem ok, especially since 111 online/call levels seem to have dropped again as well.

@Beatrixpotterspencil

I have no idea why they have been allowed to continue working. I think it may be a case that if the council starts investigating it will open up a whole can or worms that they then have to deal with. When you have thousands of illegal immigrants working for £4 an hour in these factories and living 30 to a house or in sheds in people's gardens, what do you then do to address these problems? They are here illegally, they can't claim benefits and would need to be re-housed to stop the spread in overcrowded conditions. Leicester city council (like councils in many areas of the country) cannot even adequately house it's population of legal workers let alone the illegal ones ?? So for too long a blind eye has been turned to it, until a crisis like this means the situation has to be addressed.
PatriciaHolm · 05/07/2020 21:41

...and the data at Charnwood level exists publicly now, it's in the spreadsheet updated every day on the Govt website. So no excuses!

Lolly12 · 05/07/2020 21:46

@PatriciaHolm yes, hopefully this will help. But Charnwood is quite a large area covering Loughborough and a lot of villages. They don’t want to seem to release ward or village data, which is what residents are asking for.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 05/07/2020 22:16

Yes feeling very fed up here too. I’m just inside the city border so even if some of the county areas get released on the next review I have a bad feeling we’ll be stuck for longer.

The problem is the people who were breaking lockdown before either:

  • didn’t see the point in it
  • were not able to stay home/follow the guidance

Neither of those groups will have changed by this extension and we’re now testing more people so with get more positive results.

I’m going to end up doing something silly like cutting all my hair off or dying it green out of sheer boredom and frustration at this rate

Toddlerteaplease · 05/07/2020 22:19

My parents live in an area that is being used as a buffer zone. There is apparently a lot of anger there about it. I'm puzzled why the next village along was also locked down, as there is open countryside beyond, which would have made a good natural buffer. Also there Will be lot of traffic between the two villages.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/07/2020 22:20

Their local parish council has said that there isn't any cases in their village. It's not really a village, more of a suburb.
