Leicester facing full lockdown

According to the BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-53206506.
Anyone living there - how do you feel about this? Personally I would feel terribly trapped, almost like I was being punished, like when teacher's used to keep a whole class behind due to the behaviour of a minority.

@YoshimisMum Can I ask where you got these charts? And are there any for the different areas of the city?

@Layladylay234
Not sure whether you have seen this from PHE from the 1st July - more city specific details broken down into wards

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachmentdata/file/897128/COVID-199activityLeicesterrFinal-report0107200_v3.pdf

Watch out for the scales on each graph - they are different for each ward so not in context on the page
Hope this helps a bit more

@Chaotic45 if you're still picking up messages on this, do you happen to know if the extended lockdown's made any difference among those you mentioned who simply aren't interested in complying?

I believe some PPs felt it would make a difference this time, and I just wondered if that's proved to be the case or not?

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 12/07/2020 14:47

@Puzzledandpissedoff I don't think it has. I was chatting on Teams to some colleagues last week, 1 had been to Walsall for her grandsons 1st birthday party, 1 had been to the seaside with their kids, 1 had been to a picnic with friends at Bradgate park. All had travelled out of the lockdown area to do it.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/07/2020 15:18

Thanks for replying, TorysSuck - it's disappointing to hear that, but perjhaps not surprising

Babyroobs · 12/07/2020 15:39
@TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 I do believe the whole street testing is just in the problem areas, such as North Evington and Spinny Hills etc. They’ve been asking for healthcare volunteers (specifically with non-English language skills) to go door to door with home testing kits and help explain social distancing/isolation rules too.
My friend lives just off Uppingham road and says they were going door to door testing a few days ago.

Chaotic45 · 12/07/2020 16:59

@Puzzledandpissedoff sadly I think @TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 is right. I do know of people who have done as they've been asked and not travelled including not going on much awaited holidays. My dad is stuck in the centre of Leicester, he's old and fragile and feeling very lonely and desperate.

But I also know lots of people who have ignored things completely including at least 5 nurses and 3 consultants who work at Glenfield hospital and live in the locked down zone but have flown on holiday, or plan to next week.

Apparently Ryanair have refused to refund people's flights and that's pushed them towards going anyway.

In addition, people from places on the outer edges of the lockdown area feel aggrieved to have been included. This is made worse by our mayor constantly questioning decisions and their local parish councils whipping up a feeling of injustice. So, many have carried on as usual and travelled in and out doing as they wish.

I feel the message should have been clearer, communication better, more enforcement and more help for people with holidays booked.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/07/2020 18:37

Thoroughly depressing - as I said not surprising, but depressing all the same

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 13/07/2020 11:38

Not looking good for the review later this week www.leicestermercury.co.uk/news/leicester-news/latest-leicester-lockdown-situation-set-4320635

Chaotic45 · 13/07/2020 12:47

@TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 I've read the article that you linked to and I agree- especially given the last bit.

I know we must remain locked down until it's deemed the right time but it's becoming incredibly hard for some people and businesses, especially retail. Independent shops are seeing their potential customers shop elsewhere outside the city, and in many cases once they've bought what they need they won't revisit the Leicester store for some time (e.g. summer clothes shopping).

Many people are acutely aware that whilst they are following the rules, many other people are not doing so- travelling to pubs and shops outside the zone, taking their kids to attractions, visiting friends and taking holidays both in the UK and abroad.

There are a tiny amount of checks going on, but it's really a token effort and there is only so long that many decent people will continue like this, whilst watching others do exactly as they wish with no consequence.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 13/07/2020 14:11

Chaotic whilst on our Daily Boring Walk around our estate yesterday we walked past a chap cleaning his car and chatting to his neighbour. He was merrily telling her all about his night out at a Narborough pub the evening before which is out of the zone.

Knobber Angry

Babyroobs · 13/07/2020 14:57

My colleague just drove down Belgrave road and says it looks like there isn't even a lock down happening. So frustrating.

I am one of those on the edge of lockdown feeling aggrieved. I have absolutely stuck to the rules for months now and it's still ongoing. All I want is to have a haircut and get some new summer clothes. I have done nothing for four months now apart from go supermarket shopping and walk my dogs in the same remote area each evening. My four teenagers are getting depressed, as am I. We have had enough yet people in other communities just flaunt the rules constantly.

Freshhel · 13/07/2020 15:12

@babyroobs I feel exactly the same as you, I to am on the edge of the zone, the end of my street is outside of the zone. I've strictly stuck with it and today I've hit a wall and feel really sad and down about it all.

rosie39forever · 13/07/2020 15:30

@Babyroobs my friends dh is a teacher in the city and has to drive down Belgrave Gate to work and said there's been no change at all, everything open as normal..... what the hells going on is no one enforcing the lockdown at all? You're going to be stuck in Groundhog Day if this is allowed to carry on, I feel so sorry for all those who are abiding by the rules.

Absolutely agree about the messages needing to be clearer. There was multiple documents being published with contradictory information in the first few days of lockdown, which made things worse, as people just choose to run with whichever fits best for them.

I’ve seen a photo shared today of local lockdown rules which suggest you can travel outside the boundary for exercise or shopping, which I was led to believe was a massive no no previously. Not sure of the original source but it’s a .gov publication.

I think those that followed the guidance to the letter first time around are generally still doing so. I know loads of people who had holidays booked for this week and have cancelled or rearranged.

I reckon with the latest figures it’s looking like another 2 weeks at least. Slight hope for those in the county areas within the boundary as figures are a lot lower, but no guarantee. Leader of leics county council apparently talking to Matt Hancock soon about all the moaning he’s been subjected to due to certain areas being included. www.leicestermercury.co.uk/news/leicester-news/government-called-release-parts-leicester-4322188

It really is disgusting.

Chaotic45 · 13/07/2020 15:50

@Babyroobs and @Freshhel I think it's totally understandable that you feel this way. Especially with a potential 'release day looming but not looking terribly hopeful.

I really really feel for you. It's all very well everyone being 'in it together', but there is so much unfairness, confusion and selfishness all around that it's becoming so hard for people to do the right thing without feeling extremely hard done by.

I'm just outside the zone. My dad is inside it and is fragile and struggling. My husbands work place has had to close so he is now travelling to a different part of the business down south every day.

Freshhel · 13/07/2020 16:39

@chaotic45 you poor father I hope this is over soon and he can see you. I'm self employed and although still working it's becoming more difficult with the nursery being shut again trying to juggle a toddler with DH taking holiday days here and there so we can both keep earning.
I feel angry most of the time.
Today one of the huge plasma type screens on the back of a low loader came along my street and I'm sure in the whole area with the stay at home message and essential travel only, my toddler was very excited by this, me not so much, made me cry
