Leicester facing full lockdown

According to the BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-53206506.
Anyone living there - how do you feel about this? Personally I would feel terribly trapped, almost like I was being punished, like when teacher's used to keep a whole class behind due to the behaviour of a minority.

Their local parish council has said that there isn't any cases in their village. It's not really a village, more of a suburb.

PatriciaHolm · 05/07/2020 22:35
@PatriciaHolm yes, hopefully this will help. But Charnwood is quite a large area covering Loughborough and a lot of villages. They don’t want to seem to release ward or village data, which is what residents are asking for.
Charnwood appears to have been averaging 2-4 cases a day in total for the last couple of weeks. I don't think they do release more localised data anywhere at the moment (it was suggested this was because of risk of identification - at that level it wouldn't be hard to figure out who they are. Though given C-19 is a notifiable disease that may not be relevant...!)

Lolly12 · 05/07/2020 22:59

@PatriciaHolm those Charnwood figures sound pretty low/average considering the population.

What’s annoyed people is that Leicester City Council have released more localised data (by ward I think), with top ten areas for positive cases. So for those areas at least, those folk can at least see the reasoning behind a further lockdown.

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 05/07/2020 23:16

@Beatrixpotterspencil

so is anyone allowed to go to work in Leicester? and why are the sweatshops still running gif theyre illegal?
Police have been attending factories that have been reported. One person has been arrested on immigration matters.

Lolly12 · 08/07/2020 19:37

Just a couple of new things published on this recently in case anyone interested.

The mayor of Leicester seems to have written this paper about the run up to the Leicester lockdown, and doesn’t pull many punches in terms of blame. Accurate and local figures weren’t made available in a timely manner.. mcusercontent.com/ab3c575ef029741145cc68979/files/a1fbab65-c820-4988-a503-264d7f9c177a/CM_Paper_Leicester_COVID_19_and_Leicester.pdf

Leicestershire county council have published more information about cases in some wards, as opposed to just whole districts.
www.leicestershire.gov.uk/news/covid-19-further-data-released-by-county-council

Having a quick flick through, it appears that the county areas that have been included in the lockdown maybe there for geographical reasons rather than because of numbers of cases. A word of caution to outer suburbs of other cities that maybe facing a local lockdown in the future.

From what I have heard from friends and colleagues the level of testing in Leicester and Leicestershire is through the roof (can’t see any published data of number of tests carried out just positive cases). People are being encouraged to get tested whether they have symptoms or not. Whole street testing is happening in the most concerning city wards. I cannot see cases coming down at all any time soon with more testing...

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 08/07/2020 20:16

@Lolly12 I read that too, but weirdly I'm in the city as are loads of people I know and none of us have been invited to test so not sure which areas they are targeting. We've all seen the twitter/Facebook adverts saying to get tested if you have symptoms but that's it. That's people in Braunstone, Oadby, Glenfield, city centre, Wigston, thurnby and Syston so all in the lockdown zone. 🤷🏻‍♀️unless they're only testing whole streets around Evington. Maybe I need to ask around a bit more.

Lolly12 · 08/07/2020 20:58

@TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 I do believe the whole street testing is just in the problem areas, such as North Evington and Spinny Hills etc. They’ve been asking for healthcare volunteers (specifically with non-English language skills) to go door to door with home testing kits and help explain social distancing/isolation rules too.

caramac04 · 08/07/2020 21:10

Back to the original post. I feel like a prisoner despite daily walking with dogs.
Can’t even go to buy much needed knickers.
I’ve got a garden, a lovely dog, family, but really bloody fed up.

danni0509 · 08/07/2020 21:18

@caramac04 hopefully not much longer Thanks is it the 18th at the earliest?

Layladylay234 · 08/07/2020 21:26

I feel you @caramac04. I'm in the lockdown area and lost my shit after walking to Narborough Road again yesterday with my son who should have been in school celebrating with his friends as a year 6 leaver. I'm fed up of walking in the meadow behind my house. As lovely as it is, we've done it to sodding death.

To the PP who said they saw the FB ads, what did they say? I'm just across the road from Braunstone and nothings come up on mine.

Freshhel · 08/07/2020 21:53

@caramac04, can you get your much needed knickers from m & s or the supermarkets?? I'm in the lockdown area but purchased clothes from fosse Park m & s.
Onwards and upwards I'm crossing the days off until the 18th.....

Lemons1571 · 08/07/2020 21:55

Is their generic guidance that needs to be followed if you’re inside the lockdown area? Or is it full of loopholes ala Dominic Cummings?
What if you had booked to go on holiday elsewhere in the UK? Can you still go? Can’t see people being too altruistic when they’ve already booked and paid.

Freshhel · 08/07/2020 22:14

@Lemons1571,
I should have gone away weekend of the 4th, I contacted the place I was due to stay and explained the situation and they've refunded me in full.
However the advice stated is very 'cummings' style and wishy washy as usual so neighbours of mine went away anyway towing a huge caravan they didn't get stopped leaving the area no police about more than usual.

Lolly12 · 08/07/2020 22:42

@Lemons1571 there is a lot of ‘guidance’, and then there was also new legislation (published Friday afternoon) that came into force last Saturday that is a bit clearer in terms of what you could get fined for.

Police cannot enforce the guidelines so anyone can come and go in and out of the lockdown area if they want to. The guidance suggests you should only do this however for ‘essential’ reasons e.g. work, caring for vulnerable person etc. There was some police presence on a few roads last weekend stopping random cars and asking people why they were travelling, but like I say they can only advise. There’s 1000’s of staff coming into the area to the hospitals every day for example. Impossible to police properly.

The enforceable issue comes with staying overnight away from your primary residence. This is not allowed (unless you have a support bubble as a single adult household). There’s also legislation around non essential businesses too and being able to shut down or fine if they stay open.

Lots of people I know had booked a holiday for next week. It’s Leicester’s traditional holiday week, as schools break up here this Friday. Most holiday companies have been cancelling/rearranging anyone due to come with a lockdown postcode, but guessing there’ll still be a lot risking it. Don’t think refunds or change of dates are guaranteed.

I would say very few people really understand exactly what you can and can’t do legally. It’s not been communicated well at all.

caramac04 · 09/07/2020 08:22

@danni0509 the lockdown will be reviewed on the 18th so can’t see it being lifted before the 20th.
@Freshhel, I like to look at the knickers but I have ordered some pj shorts from Matalan and they might be delivered today Smile
I should be at my caravan enjoying the beach and different scenery. Yes I’m fortunate and will be going once lockdown is lifted.
@Layladylay234, I completely understand about doing the local area to death. I was actually going to take the DGC to Bradgate Park even though I shouldn’t but the rain has put paid to that.
I’ve not even been in a shop since the initial lockdown (when I was at the caravan) because I’m vulnerable and DH has been happy to do shopping if I can’t get a home delivery or click and collect.
@Lolly12, yes a lot of people have lost their annual holiday and might not get away at all this year. It’s not that easy to rebook later in the year. Poor kids have missed their friends at school and now lost their holiday.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 09/07/2020 08:25

@Layladykay234

The posts I saw on twitter and Facebook were from .gov and Leicester/Leicestershire councils just reiterating the stay home, stay alert, if you have symptoms get tested message.

@Lemons1571 the rules are that you only do 'Essential travel' so basically back to March lockdown but with the addition of bubbles for single adults and socially distanced meet up outside for groups of 6.

There have been lots of reports of holiday parks/hotels, contacting people with bookings and cancelling them.

The council have FAQs www.leicester.gov.uk/your-council/coronavirus/coronavirus-in-leicester-latest-news/common-questions-on-leicester-lockdown/

MayFayre · 09/07/2020 09:55

Friends of mine who are in Leicestershire but well outside the lockdown area have had their holiday reservations in this country cancelled. The companies both said they were cancelling all reservations with an LE postcode. 2 separate families, different destinations.

We too have an LE postcode and have something booked in Nottingham at the weekend. The company phoned up and checked all the details about us to make sure we aren’t from the lockdown area.

allfalldown47 · 09/07/2020 11:40

@caramac04 I must be very near to you! I'm in western park, so fully within the plague zone Sad
I feel more locked down than ever, my parents are outside of the zone and suddenly the things that were keeping us sane have disappeared again.
We had started visiting Bradgate Park, the woods etc but no they are officially off limits I just feel so trapped!!!

allfalldown47 · 09/07/2020 11:42

Ah, apologies, it's @Layladylay234 that mentions Narborough Rd! I'm guessing we are all Leicester city residents though! Sad

Layladylay234 · 09/07/2020 11:51

@allfalldown47. Yep, not too far from me in Western Park. I walked to Fosse Park today at 8am. I had been up since 4 with a 6 week old though. That was a different walk to usual!

The one thing I have said is that when this sodding lockdown ends, I'll be straight into town supporting local businesses. I worry about the reputation Leicester is getting because of this and the press. It's not my home city and I won't live here forever, but Leicester is a lot better than other places in the UK and it holds a place in my heart.

caramac04 · 09/07/2020 13:09

@allfalldown47, I’m in Wigston so technically the county. I’ve seen figures that show we have a higher rate than most places but less than Leicester.
I’ve had to grudgingly admit that we do need to be included in the lockdown.
It just feels like it will never end.

allfalldown47 · 09/07/2020 13:12

It has really got me down this second time round, my dc seem fed up and although I'm in Leicester my family are mostly down south, so very much now at a different stage to us.
Thank goodness for my friends, daily texting, calls etc are keeping me sane (and chocolate!)

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 09/07/2020 17:34

Leicester mercury have reported on the door to door testing www.leicestermercury.co.uk/news/leicester-news/volunteer-coronavirus-testers-go-door-4310496

It's focused on a north west a Leicester, spreading out to Hamilton at the moment

YoshimisMum · 09/07/2020 18:28

@caramac04
I’m in Wigston too. Don’t get too despondent as it looks like you may be looking at cumulative historical figures that go back to the beginning (local press love a drama) It seems we have already had our ‘peak’. Whilst we have overall (as a % of 100,000 population) fairly bad stats it is probably better to look at the last two weeks as we have a decreasing infection rate - hope this makes sense!
Problem seems to be in Oadby at the present (this breaks it down into MOSA rather than Oadby/Wigston together)
The second screenshot was taken from the latest report via Leicestershire County Council - some interesting facts in there
