Leicester facing full lockdown

According to the BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-53206506.
Anyone living there - how do you feel about this? Personally I would feel terribly trapped, almost like I was being punished, like when teacher's used to keep a whole class behind due to the behaviour of a minority.

@Alex50

Did anyone listen to Matt Hancock this morning?
Yes I had him on.
Casino218 · 30/06/2020 07:54

Chaotic45 I bet you are much kinder in real life?

Alex50 · 30/06/2020 07:55

Matt Hancock said this morning children have not been ill but there has been a number of infections. He also said he would not publish the testing results, only to the community that is effected as he said it is not needed and doesn’t help with controlling the pandemic. It was an interesting interview if you can find it on the BBC website.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 30/06/2020 07:56

@SimonJT and @alex50 what was he on this morning and did he have anything useful to say?

yearinyearout · 30/06/2020 07:58

Pointless exercise unless they are prepared to stop people leaving the city. They are closing shops and restaurants yet residents can just hop in their car and pop five miles down the road to use facilities there, taking potential infection with them.

SunflowerProsecco · 30/06/2020 07:58

I blame the government. If people like Dominic Cummings can ignore lockdown rules with approval from the prime minister, why shouldn't everyone else?
Dominic Cummings showed a very bad example to the public and should have been fired. Boris Johnson effectively told the whole country they can forget about the guidelines.

starrynight19 · 30/06/2020 07:58

Have to just see what part the children played in spreading the virus then. It doesn’t seem they have been ill but obviously more research needs to be done on how they might spread it.
Guess that can only be done when schools reopen.

nagynolonger · 30/06/2020 08:03

Yes brilliant we will all blame Dominic Cummings.

And what bloody good will that do? Boo Hooo he did it Miss. We are not six year olds in the school playground.

Chaotic45 · 30/06/2020 08:07

On BBC this mornjng Matt Hancock said that they 'recommend' no one travels within, into or out of Leicester. He said that no legal measures will be used to enforce this and when pressed as to why he said its because they think people will do as they are asked.

Unfortunately it's not going to work. Too many people for whatever reason haven't done as they are asked. The government need to look at why this is and work with this information to reach these non-compliant people.

I accept some people will never listen or do as they are asked. But there are communities in Leicester that have not been reached in a way that they will engage with- they can and will comply if they are told what to do by people they trust.

Chaotic45 · 30/06/2020 08:09

@nagynolonger I totally agree. But like it or not people are refusing to comply with SD and track and trace and citing Dominic Cummings behaviour as the reason.

Of course it's totally ridiculous, but it's very real.

It's amplified here in Leicester as our mayor did something similar and has admitted it and given a pathetic waffle of an excuse.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 30/06/2020 08:13

Thanks Leicester City Council, that's helpful! Oh no, hang on, it's not helpful at all!

Leicester facing full lockdown
annabel85 · 30/06/2020 08:18

So expect the pubs in the nearby towns and villages to be flooded with Leicester folk all weekend.

danni0509 · 30/06/2020 08:20

@TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 what a shambles.

Alex50 · 30/06/2020 08:24

Matt Hancock said he is looking at changing the law of opening non essential shops and non essential travel if people don’t adhere to the guidelines.

danni0509 · 30/06/2020 08:25

If the people breaking the rules ruining it for the majority are on benefits I would stick an ankle tag on them and the condition of receiving payment is doing as they are bloody told.

I fear this is just the start of things to come for us 😡

danni0509 · 30/06/2020 08:26

@Alex50 is that just for Leicester or applicable to everywhere?

Alex50 · 30/06/2020 08:29

People saying the army can’t be called in, it can, it has been done before in Northern Ireland.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Banner

Alex50 · 30/06/2020 08:32

@danni0509 if he changes the law it will be, I would think for the whole of Englans. It will be a last resort though, there hoping people will follow guidelines.

Chaotic45 · 30/06/2020 08:32

@Alex50 that's not quite what he said. He said he is changing the law so they can enforce closure of non essential retail over next few days.

He then said they have no plans to change laws to enforce their recommendations about travel. When pressed he said that this is because they believe people will do as they are asked but that if that proves not to be the case they will look at enforcing it.

The trouble is it will take weeks to establish that people have ignored the recommendations.

Believe me, people are ignoring them. They have a deeply ingrained mistrust of the government and do not so sided her to be their leaders. What needs to happen is to get the people who they do regard as their leaders onside. These pole command huge respect and will be carefully listened to.

Chaotic45 · 30/06/2020 08:33

@danni0509 it's nothing to do with people on benefits. Leicester's multicultural community has an excellent work ethic. But they have largely continued with everyday life.

danni0509 · 30/06/2020 08:36

I don't live in Leicester @Chaotic45 when you say largely continuing with every day life what do you mean? Interested to know.

RancidOldHag · 30/06/2020 08:37

We don't know that anyone has been breaking the rules.

Because the rules don't not make transmission impossible, just reduce it.

Sommehting we should always remember if calling for further easing. Not jus if thinking that distancing outdoors no longer matters

Alex50 · 30/06/2020 08:39

It is this community that will be filling hospital beds and the morgue in 2 to 3 weeks time.

danni0509 · 30/06/2020 08:40

The reason I ask @Chaotic45 is because we have people here largely doing what the fuck they like but no increase in cases so just wondered what they are doing differently. As I say I don't live in Leicester so not familiar so was just interested.

SimonJT · 30/06/2020 08:41
**@SimonJT* and @alex50* what was he on this morning and did he have anything useful to say?
Nothing useful, but refused to release testing info or fully discuss the outbreaks in schools in Leicester and said children have not been ill, despite five schools being closed throughout June due to children testing positive. I think he used the word ill as you have of course have covid but not actually be ill.
