My friend has just said she's not rushing into anything /going anywhere for the rest of the year.
Do you think Lockdown is over too fast ?

OP posts:
FrugiFan · 23/06/2020 15:08

Nope it has dragged on long enough

Midrangecolours · 23/06/2020 15:09

Rest of the YEAR??!

ArriettyJones · 23/06/2020 15:10

I wish they’d started earlier with the easing but done it more gradually while watching the R number closely.

It seems we just switched from entirely prioritising public health to entirely prioritising economic concerns, with no segue.

onestepat · 23/06/2020 15:11

I agree and can't wait for things to open.
I couldn't have done this till December

OP posts:
Spied · 23/06/2020 15:12

Yes, too fast.

Bluntness100 · 23/06/2020 15:12

No of course not but if your friend and anyone else wishes to stay home die rhe rest of the year or even their lives you can.

It’s called choice. We are all entitled to it.

violetscone · 23/06/2020 15:12

Yes, they are. They’re trying to have the second spike now in the summer, blatantly.

RightIsRight · 23/06/2020 15:14

No they aren’t opening fast enough

bengalcat · 23/06/2020 15:14

No I don’t . I’d say we need to get the economy going especially for those in the hospitality sector and kids back to school . And we do need to sort out a strategy for managing the inevitable rise in coughs/ colds and sniffles in the autumn and winter most of which will not be Covid but will cause angst for some .

Tootletum · 23/06/2020 15:14

No. Not actually going anywhere though as I can't face all the bollocks queues and weird divide between people who seem to want to brush past me for kicks, and people who leap out of the way like they've been set on fire.

RightIsRight · 23/06/2020 15:15

Do you feel the same about every other country then or just ours?
Stellakent · 23/06/2020 15:16

No. Things need to get back to normal. There hasn't been a new case in my local borough (several hundred thousand people) for over a week. I'm in London.

Angelonia · 23/06/2020 15:17

No. There may be a second wave at some point, but it may not be for months. While the infection rate is down we need to get things moving to avoid economic collapse.

sashagabadon · 23/06/2020 15:17

no, it all seems quite cautious to me

school's still won't be back till September - that's over 2 months away!

there will be spikes of course but local ones - no doubt the media will completely over react and predict we're all going to die however

Nickname21 · 23/06/2020 15:18

No. People need to be able to get on with their lives and jobs and businesses need to be saved.

If some people don't need jobs etc and can stay locked in for months then that's up to them.

sashagabadon · 23/06/2020 15:19

@violetscone

don't be silly

and even if they were (they're not) a summer spike would be a million times better than an autumn/ winter one

BluebellForest836 · 23/06/2020 15:20

No, too slow.

starfish4 · 23/06/2020 15:20

It feels too fast to me, and doesn't help that SAGE were saying the numbers are too high to cut the 2m rule. Things can't go back to normal, otherwise we'll be in the same situation again. I'd rather they take it step by step, so it's clear if the guidelines in each area are working or if they need adjustment.

I came across two people the other day, out shopping for a thermometer - he wore a mask but looked hot, she's was dripping in perspiration. I had a vizor on but makes you think.

BlusteryLake · 23/06/2020 15:21

Nope. We can't wait until the most risk averse feel comfortable, all the while the economy is tanking and our children are falling behind with their education.

Bol87 · 23/06/2020 15:23

No actually. I despise this government but I actually don’t think they are doing that awful a job at easing back to opening stuff up. Schools is a shambles but that aside. They allowed people to go on day trips, see friends in the garden, shielders out for walks, some school years back & nurseries open. It’s been a good month or so now & the figures are still trending downwards or fairly flat. Certainly no signs of a significant spike. A few outbreaks in meat factories etc have been well handled. The NHS is fine from a Covid perspective. Test centres are not remotely overwhelmed. Community transmission is pretty low.

So now, we can open a bit more. Try desperately to try save the economy & people’s livelihoods. People keep bleating on about the govmt only caring about the economy but behind the economy are people’s jobs. People make businesses. The thing that keeps a roof over their heads & fr on the table. So actually, it’s pretty damn important!

Once these changes happen, the next review for August can see if the new changes are working or not. And gives two months grace to ascertain if things are in a good place to reopen schools fully etc!

Splattherat · 23/06/2020 15:23

Yes far too fast. I have been shielding and am fortunate to be able to continue to WFH so I will proceed cautiously as I don’t believe we are out of the woods yet.

Racoonworld · 23/06/2020 15:24

No, as much as I’d love for things to open more slowly and cautiously, we’ve been in lockdown now for 3 months and we can’t just continue forever. People are losing jobs and much better for things to open over summer when more people will be outside anyway then waiting until winter to open.

Redolent · 23/06/2020 15:24

Absolutely. The huge rise in cases and hospitalizations in the US right demonstrates the result of opening up too many things too quickly. Americans celebrated the end of lockdown by packing into bars and restaurants on 12 May. We can all see where that’s led.

This sadly carries a real risk of jeopardising full time return to school in September. The govt’s only hope is a for a vaccine to be out in record speed by then.

Everyone can make their own decisions at this point. I’ll diverge from many of my own family/friends and that’s fine. I’ll continue to wear a mask, minimise shopping, not got to pubs and restaurants. Happy to meet one other household indoors if we’ve both self-isolated for the two weeks beforehand.

I suspect we’ll be in a precarious position by Autumn but I’m lucky enough to be able to wait it out til then.

Bol87 · 23/06/2020 15:24

@starfish4 - we are having a heatwave. I was sweating & red cheeked out for a walk yesterday too. It was 24 degrees & muggy as hell!

fessmess · 23/06/2020 15:25

Think about this. Choice I hear. Well I work in hospitality and have no choice. I will now be in a bar with people drinking and a one metre distancing rule. Basically normal. Ok there are screens etc but before lockdown the customers were all of the "it's just a bit of flu" camp. It's a matter of time before I catch it now. Frantically job hunting but fuck all about. Lamb to the slaughter springs to mind.

And people who say it's gone on too long, SAGE are NOT advising this. This is a government decision all about the fucking economy.
