Do you think things are opening too fast?

My friend has just said she's not rushing into anything /going anywhere for the rest of the year.
Do you think Lockdown is over too fast ?

Sorry, but you can’t possibly know this. Regional and local authority case numbers, published via the government website and via the numerous online case trackers by entering your postcode, are based only on lab tests performed by the NHS and Public Health England. Over 110,000 samples tested positive by independent labs are not reflected in these numbers.

superram · 23/06/2020 16:44

@fessmess that Is the same as teachers-except we don’t get the screens. I think we closed too late and possibly too hard, people who could work from home should have done so much earlier. It would have reduced people on public transport and I bars restaurants, naturally. We still needed lockdown but might have enabled us to come out earlier. I think it might be a little too quickly but I can’t wait to go to a beer garden!

SeaOtterFluff · 23/06/2020 16:45

No. We can't hide at home forever. Those who feel it's too soon aren't obliged to go out to the cinema. We locked down to flatten the curve, not to destroy the virus.

ToothFairyNemesis · 23/06/2020 16:46

Far too fast, 171 reported deaths today and it’s business as usual.

mamasiz · 23/06/2020 16:47

Far, far too fast imho. Just because you’re bored doesn’t mean the virus has gone away. Over 1000 people a day in the UK are coming down with it. That’s 7000 a week. SAGE have said earlier today that if those figures were present and this was the start of the crisis we should be entering lockdown. Instead of that, we’re coming out if it. It’s madness. I do understand economics and the concerns around that but blimey - try spending money when you’re dead.

Uhoh2020 · 23/06/2020 16:48

@fessmess no one is forcing you back into work if you dont want too give it up, theres thousands of people been made redundant in the past few months that would quite happy to take up your position

AnyFucker · 23/06/2020 16:52

No. It's time now. We have to learn to co-exist with the virus, such as it is now.

flack · 23/06/2020 16:53

No not too fast. About right or maybe a little slow.

I have American family. Their state shut down about same time as us & they opened up very suddenly. They were never banned from lots of things we are still banned from doing. They started being able to do weeks ago things that we still can't do. Like get hair cuts or go to restaurants. They have more mask wearing, but terrible protection for the unemployed.

I'm not saying their state is better, I'm saying I know what 'too fast' looks like and Britain ain't it.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 23/06/2020 16:54

No! I'm soooooo happy today!!

DominaShantotto · 23/06/2020 16:58

Way way too fast - we need to be locked up until 3020 when computers and robots can take over from us and we won't have to worry about it being "safe" because we will all be dead. Social distancing needs to be extended to 500 miles (insert Proclaimers gag in here) and we all need to be drinking butter in our coffee when we run out of milk and using our own body bags to bring our shopping home from Asda because going outside will literally kill us.

In case you haven't gathered - I think we need to unlock things now and I'm happy. If you want to sit inside being miserable until it's safe enough for you to feel happy - crack on; but you might need to job hunt because I'm fucked if my family are going through more of this because you feel like you want to ride the furlough fun finance train for another 3 months because you don't want to get back to the job you chose to do.

hopeishere · 23/06/2020 16:58

Social distancing means nothing now.

I think until most people go back to offices / schools and there is real intermingling it will stay flat in terms of cases. So lots of people inside will be the test.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 23/06/2020 16:59

@ToothFairyNemesis

233 last Tuesday 286 Tuesday before 324 Tuesday before that

Trend is clear - deaths, and infections, are falling steadily

LST · 23/06/2020 17:00

@mamasiz that's the thing though the vast majority of people who get it won't die. I could take my dog for a walk and get hit by a bus tomorrow.. you can't live in fear of something that has a tiny chance of happening. If people arent comfortable going out then they don't need to

ToothFairyNemesis · 23/06/2020 17:02

@AlecTrevelyan006 they are falling but we haven’t eased the lockdown yet.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 23/06/2020 17:04

Lockdown has been eased for several weeks

AlecTrevelyan006 · 23/06/2020 17:06

And in a couple of weeks it will be eased a little more by which time the spread of the virus will have slowed further

VaTeLaverLesMains · 23/06/2020 17:06

I'm shielding and worried about going back to work if numbers go up with this relaxation. I don't think covid secure is very reassuring when my risk of being very ill with it is still very high as stated in my letter from Boris today. It also says stay at home as much as possible...

elessar · 23/06/2020 17:07

No, not at all. It's vital for the economy and people's livelihoods.

I lost my job at the end of March and was not eligible for furlough, thankfully I was in a position where I have savings and can afford a few months unemployment- many others are not so fortunate.

I won't personally be rushing out to the pubs or to the shops - mainly because I hate queuing and I think there will be a big rush to start with. But I'm thrilled that things are starting to open up again and hopefully people's jobs will be saved.

I'm not that worried about a second spike. We all saw the crowding on the beaches in May, then the crowding for the BLM protests. Yet there's continued to be a steady fall in the infection and death rate. I don't think the virus is going to disappear but if it can stay at a manageable low level then that's a good outcome I think.

oldwhyno · 23/06/2020 17:07

people seem to be VERY roughly split 50/50 between "too fast" and "too slow".

so they've probably got it about right.

ToothFairyNemesis · 23/06/2020 17:12

@AlecTrevelyan006 Lockdown has been eased for several weeks slightly , but it’s not comparable to the July changes.

wanderings · 23/06/2020 17:14

Noooooooooooooo! It’s been too slow.

MadameMeursault · 23/06/2020 17:17

Yes. The number of daily cases is around the same as when lockdown began. This shit government is putting the economy before people’s lives 😡

Couch25k · 23/06/2020 17:18

Hurry up and get back to normal!! This cant stay like this forever.

Pinkkgaga · 23/06/2020 17:18

Not fast enough! About time things opened back up. If yo don’t to risk going to say the pictures or a museum, don’t go. No one is forcing you.

cptartapp · 23/06/2020 17:18

No. I've got the antibodies and never even had any symptoms. Let's crack on.
