My friend has just said she's not rushing into anything /going anywhere for the rest of the year.
Do you think Lockdown is over too fast ?

OP posts:
cdtaylornats · 23/06/2020 15:54

If the shutdown continues much longer there will not be many places to go back to.

DisobedientHamster · 23/06/2020 15:54

Not fast enough.

KentuckyBlueberry · 23/06/2020 15:55

We're not forced to go shopping or to the pub etc.

Unless you work in a shop or pub.

milveycrohn · 23/06/2020 15:55

far too slowly, IMO

dworky · 23/06/2020 15:56

Absolutely yes.

DisobedientHamster · 23/06/2020 15:56

@ktp100

I believe that Boris is more concerned with the economy than lives so yes, I think he's jumping in a bit fast, in honesty.

We all have the choice to go out or not, though. We're not forced to go shopping or to the pub etc.

Economic recessions and depressions are very concerning for many, many lives.
snappycamper · 23/06/2020 15:57

@ArriettyJones

I wish they’d started earlier with the easing but done it more gradually while watching the R number closely.

It seems we just switched from entirely prioritising public health to entirely prioritising economic concerns, with no segue.

100% this. Would like to see them consider the impact on children, who seem to have been entirely forgotten in all this. No mention today of whether holiday clubs will be allowed to open, never mind returning to school!
SavoyCabbage · 23/06/2020 15:57

Lamb to the slaughter!

At least there are sinks to wash your hands when you are working in a pub or restaurant. Unlike most classrooms or on checkouts.

IcedPurple · 23/06/2020 15:57

Your friend appears to have anxiety issues. Not sure why you think her ideas are important.

And no, I don't think the country is being reopened too quickly. Lockdown was to present the NHS being overwhelmed. That has been achieved, so time to ease back into something approaching normal. Your friend can lock herself away for as long as she wishes.

Lynda07 · 23/06/2020 15:58

It's not over yet, it is easing. As long as nobody goes mad and eases gently, I think that will be alright. It is too soon to completely end all restrictions. That has happened in other countries and they've had an increase in cases of C-19, we don't want that here.

Sinuhe · 23/06/2020 15:58

Nope, I don't think so. And it's not compulsory to go out anyway. So if you feel it's not for you, just stay at home and only go out for work/ essential food shopping.

imsooverthisdrama · 23/06/2020 15:58

No absolutely not , like others have said if your concerned then don't go .
Ok if your concerned and you work in a pub but if you don't go back soon you may not have a job .
The hospitality Industry needs to get back or you won't have a pub/ restaurant to go too .
So many have lost their job anyway .

Kentucky
I agree with you. Also treatments haven't really been developed yet although we're slightly better off.

Sandybval · 23/06/2020 15:58

I believe that Boris is more concerned with the economy than lives

Do you think a flailing economy won't have an effect on lives? It will cost many.

covidco · 23/06/2020 15:59

I'm with your friend. But we had local spikes and I work on COVID wards at my hospital so I suspect I have a bit of a skewed view of things!

IcedPurple · 23/06/2020 16:00

Unless you work in a shop or pub

In which case you'll likely be very happy that you have a job to go back to. If shops and pubs were to be forced to stay shut much longer, those jobs might not exist.

Toastandjams · 23/06/2020 16:03

Do you think GPs surgeries will open soon to normal public as before ? I only through the phone consultation?

FrugiFan · 23/06/2020 16:03

I think it's too fast. I don't think most people have been keeping 2m apart for a while.
And yet the numbers continue to drop. If anything this is evidence that social distancing is not necessary. It is entirely your choice not to go shopping or whatever, but those who want to should be allowed to.

MarshaBradyo · 23/06/2020 16:04

I believe that Boris is more concerned with the economy than lives

I think people are right to consider livelihoods and avoiding a tanking economy which would cost lives.

Teacher12345 · 23/06/2020 16:04

In theory no, but I don't trust the general public to make sensible decisions so maybe they shouldn't give so much advance warning of when they are going to reduce things.

FrugiFan · 23/06/2020 16:05

I believe that Boris is more concerned with the economy than lives

It isn't an either/or decision, though, is it. A massive fall in the economy costs lives too, as well as livelihoods. Poverty is clearly linked to lower life expectancy.
Saving the economy is saving lives in the long run.

Stellakent · 23/06/2020 16:06

I don't have a job to go back to. For me the stress of having no work has been greater than the stress of worrying about catching Covid. If people don't want to go back to work there will be plenty of people like me happy to take their jobs.

If people don't want to go out socially that's entirely up to them.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 23/06/2020 16:08

If it was down to me I’d open everything tomorrow night but of course going out to the pub or restaurant or whatever isn’t compulsory. People are free to stay at home should they do wish.

RightIsRight · 23/06/2020 16:09

I believe that Boris is more concerned with the economy than lives

The economy IS lives!
ffs, why do people continue to spout absolute shit like this. It’s infuriating. More people will die from a tanked economy than they will from the virus.

notalwaysalondoner · 23/06/2020 16:09

Nope, but it’s the inconsistency I can’t bear.

You can go to primark but you can’t get legally MARRIED even with just a registrar and two witnesses. Wtf, this is a legal right that they’ve just suspended for months?!?!

You can go to a hotel straight away on 4 July and yet they’re not opening self catering self contained single family accommodation first? Or even letting people go to second homes? Or saying you had to have booked it before lockdown to avoid everywhere selling out? So there’s clearly going to be absolute chaos at beaches, Lake District etc. I thought they’d do a gradual ramp up with previously booked self catering first, followed 2-4 weeks later by hotels, then 2-4 weeks later by camping (with full facilities, it’s laughable some sites are keeping toilets closed for health reasons, because open defecation is so healthy).

You can go to a pub and yet everyone is still being told to work from home with all the huge productivity implications (and also the lack of spending that people do on their way to/from work and at lunch).

I just hate the lack of logic. But logically I think a whole country lockdown would have been much shorter as it’s much worse in some areas and for some demographics than others, so I don’t know why I’m surprised.
