Are Jewish people BAME?

I have looked this up and find so many different answers. Does anyone know for a fact?

... do you realise that “the left” is not a hive mind? And also that just because someone votes labour, they are not automatically what I would consider left wing. Lots of centrists will start voting labour again now Jeremy corbyn has gone.

Floatyboat · 20/06/2020 10:02

@catsandlavender

Yes I realise that. I might be one of them.

Floatyboat · 20/06/2020 10:04

It’s just racism @Floatyboat whichever part of the political spectrum it comes from.

Sure. Whilst far right racism is fairly non discerning, I think it is interesting that left wing racism tends to be much more restricted in who it targets.

Purpleandteal · 20/06/2020 10:06

I'm of Syrian Jewish heritage (as well as some other) and I do consider myself BAME. I pass as white though but always choose "other" when it comes to ethnicity.

Onceuponatimethen · 20/06/2020 10:10

@Floatyboat there was quite a lot of (gobbledygook) theory behind Nazi right wing racism and much of that centred on wealth-related anti Semitism.

I’m not sure discerning is a way to think of racism.

Onceuponatimethen · 20/06/2020 10:11

Also it isn’t really ‘interesting’ when your grandfather’s father died in a concentration camp and you have anti Semitic comments made about Jewish people in your hearing at work. This is lived experience for many of us.

lankylemon · 20/06/2020 10:11
@lankylemon

That was just what came up on Google to be honest. But seems a pretty comprehensive account of fairly reliable data. Obviously it doesn't capture the full story.
Oh, you found one report on Google from 2001. Carry on then Hmm

Floatyboat · 20/06/2020 10:15

@onceupon

I know that. Within some circles anti Jewish prejudice is accepted when other types of prejudice aren't. Highlighting that and questioning why otherwise liberal minded people have that blind spot is important in my view.

Floatyboat · 20/06/2020 10:16

@lankylemon

Don't most people find most things on Google?

Yes 2001, do you think things have changed significantly since then?

Jewish is a Religion. You can be any colour to practice it.

AnnaJKing · 20/06/2020 10:32

Sigh.

“Jewish” is a religious, cultural and ethnic group, and recognised as such in British law.

catsandlavender · 20/06/2020 10:35

I’d suggest just take the L @Floatyboat when @Onceuponatimethen has told you that your comments were insensitive and offensive. “Liberal” people who think anti semitism is ok are racists, that’s the end of it.

Floatyboat · 20/06/2020 10:37

@catsandlavender

Understanding what narratives contribute to racism is important.

itsgettingweird · 20/06/2020 10:40

There is evidence in medical reports that Jewish people can have certain conditions or that certain conditions are more high risk.

So I agree. If your heritage through blood is Jewish you would be BAME.

As other said choosing a religious way of life is t ethnicity. Although the resultant way of life may pose a greater risk.

British Muslims aren't more high risk as BAME Muslims would be due to ethnicity. But may be due to living conditions (for example)

Floatyboat · 20/06/2020 10:43

I don't think this determines bame. Celtic groups may be prone to coeliac or haemachromatosis

ElizabethG81 · 20/06/2020 10:43

This is really interesting to me. My children have Ashkenazi Jewish genetic heritage which I only found out about through a DNA test (they were donor conceived). Culturally and religiously they aren't Jewish, but they are about a quarter Jewish genetically. So they won't "appear" Jewish to others, but any distinct genetic susceptibility to certain illnesses may be relevant to them. I'm not sure how to "classify" them when asked - White British, as that's what they are culturally and also how they would appear to others, or White Other? I don't think there's ever an option for Ashkenazi Jewish.

CayrolBaaaskin · 20/06/2020 10:44

I am also a white blue eyed Jew and I’m not sure if I’m BAME or not tbh. I am who I am. Also race is a cultural thing (so not all people of that race will necessarily share genetics). Whether or not people can convert makes no difference. Jews are recognised as a race in law.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 20/06/2020 10:48

I understand the point you are making Weird and agree but British Muslims can also be BAME, being of an ethnic minority’s doesn’t mean we aren’t British. I know that you were highlighting the likelihood between white Muslims (English/Scottish/Welsh) so not having a go, just the term British Muslims is all of us who are British and Muslim irrespective of heritage.

Floatyboat · 20/06/2020 10:58

Are white British Muslims bame?

Millicent10 · 20/06/2020 11:12

Agree that there is a mainstream stereotyping of Jews. Example, we were discussing family trees at work this week, one person said they have a Jewish ancestor, jokes about it explaining why that person was so tight with money followed. There is no way that they would have made jokes if the person said they had an Asian ancestor.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 20/06/2020 11:12

My only point was that British Muslims is a misnomer in the way it was used above. If we accept BAME applies to ethnicity then no, because Islam isn’t an ethnicity whereas Judaism and Sikhism as mentioned above has designated ethnic status in British law. Someone who is Muslim that wanted to identify as BAME would likely do so because of their ethnicity.

It’s not really a suitable day to day term I don’t think, useful in some academic contexts but on a day to day basis I would rather be British Asian/Turkish/Greek/Black etc. Krishnan Guru Murthy has a really interesting thread on Twitter the other day about this.

Welkin · 20/06/2020 11:20

I was looking for a photo someone had tweeted of their cat whose fur pattern looked like a yarmulke, so I searched Twitter for “Jewish cat.”

Wow. WOW. Hundreds of tweets from people commenting “lol my cat is Jewish” on photos of their cats sleeping on or grabbing at money.

Onceuponatimethen · 20/06/2020 11:52

@Floatyboat yes understanding is important but I would like to see you explaining to a group of BLM demonstrators that you found the racism against them ‘interesting’. I think they would find you pretty tone deaf

Haenow · 20/06/2020 11:53

@nicky7654

@nicky7654

British law says otherwise. I believe that over a random opinion on the internet.
