I’m worried I won’t have a job to go back to. I think I will be made redundant in August. Anyone else worried?

I know of 3 people in the travel industry who have recently been made redundant (air stewardess, sales, sales management).

Tobias1985 · 18/06/2020 18:14

I’m also in the travel industry and our company are asking for volunteers for redundancy, then they are going to mandatory. I only started in Feb after being made redundant from my last job so fully expect to be selected! I’m already looking for other jobs. Everyone I know who’s in hospitality or travel are in consultation right now, it’s looking pretty bleak 😭

Mustbetimeforachange · 18/06/2020 18:16

Yep, DD is being made redundant

torydeathdrug · 18/06/2020 18:32

yes dd1 is in the consultation process atm - hospitality, she's live in so she'll lose her home. I'm not sure her employer will survive ... all their income is from the summer season & they've missed their biggest two events. She also does festivals & sporting events, nothing happening there obviously.

Dh survived but four of his team of six were made redundant as well as an entire other team. They didn't even bother with furlough - manufacturing was disrupted by factory closures in China/Germany - and the company immediately disposed of the customer support & IT associated with the product.

My brother has just made three of his nine employees redundant - he's gone down to three days a week. That's manufacturing too (entirely different sector) but again knock on from China shutdown & reduced demand.

The hardest thing is the lack of vacancies - only one of my husband's ex-colleagues has managed to find work so far (IT).

DonaldJTrumpet · 18/06/2020 18:34

Yep, I've worked all the way through and a group of us have been made redundant. Some furloughed and some not. Just goes to show that you can't take security in working through it all.

yearinyearout · 18/06/2020 18:34

DD was made redundant after being on furlough. She was half expecting it and had started looking for jobs a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't really the point of the scheme was it!

Yes, I'm worried. My boss will do his very best to keep everyone on but there's been hardly any work since lockdown started. There is still no work for me. We usually have 5 people in the office and right now there is only enough work for one person to be in!

pinguwings · 18/06/2020 19:05

Yep- both me and DH. Except I wasn't on furlough, on maternity leave.
It's all a bit shit right now.

JoyceByersWasRight · 18/06/2020 19:11

My DH was on furlough and made redundant last week. Motor trade.

WhiteChocTwix · 18/06/2020 19:18

Yep, furlough ending 30th June, nothing else to go to. Confused Remote interview in the morning. Going to give it my best shot.

loopy42 · 18/06/2020 19:25

Yep was furloughed end of March and made redundant at the beginning of this month I worked in the leisure industry.

Had 2 interviews in the last 2 weeks but finding it hard to find alternative employment

Nanalisa60 · 18/06/2020 19:32

I think so many people will be made redundant in August, the economy is going to be in such a bad Way by Christmas, then we will be hit by Brexit, it’s really a perfect storm.

I’m so worried about the future but most people I know seem to still be booking holidays and spending money thinking that they will be just fine.

I’m not so sure, I think there will 8 million unemployed next year, I’m just so upset I remember what it was like in the late 1970s , I can’t believe we might be back to I’m the one in ten again (UB40) it’s just heartbreaking

MissClementine · 18/06/2020 19:42

Yes me, I’ve been furloughed since the start of April and about a quarter of our company will be made redundant. Consultation started this week. Very sad.

Alex50 · 18/06/2020 20:00

I know that’s what I don’t get, houses near me are selling very quickly, who has money to move at the moment?

Sorry to hear so many of you being made redundant Flowers

^yes all that progress gone. Younger people have no clue what it's like to have 10+% unemployment - it's honestly really scary (that's not just internet hyperbole).

Uhoh2020 · 18/06/2020 20:32

My company went into administration early into lockdown I will be redundant within the next few months as they wind the company down

Redcrayons · 18/06/2020 21:04

I’m preparing for it.
Everyone on my team is back apart from me. I’ve only heard from my boss once since April. I’ve been applying for jobs just in case.

Sorry to everyone who has already been made redundant. It sucks.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 18/06/2020 21:42

I can’t get my head around the fact that so many people seem oblivious to what is going on. 600,000 job losses have occurred already and that’s just the start. It is absolutely tragic and heartbreaking

Nanalisa60 · 18/06/2020 23:07

AlecTrevelyan006

I don’t think they are oblivious to it they are just living in a fools paradise, they just think it won’t happen to them, berrying there heads in the sand, I really think we will have 10% Unemployment by early next year, I’m just so worried and upset, as I said I remember what it was like in the late 1970. I really thought I would never have to see that again. Fourth years of progress could be wiped out in four months.
I really hope I am wrong !! It will give me no pleasure in being correct with the one in ten prediction.

Cocolapew · 18/06/2020 23:11

DHs work is making redundancies, 18 have to go.
The are using a points system, we're hoping DH's are high enough that he'll stay.
Sorry to anyone already made redundant Flowers

OfUselessBooks · 18/06/2020 23:46

I am being made redundant at the moment. I really thought I was safe so it was a huge shock. It's awful and I'm worried we're going to lose our house.

DaenerysD · 18/06/2020 23:53

I've been selected for redundancy so end of July that's it for me. This is the 2nd time in 12 months I've been made redundant (financial services) I've already depleted my savings. Currently painting the house preparing to sell and try to survive what's coming. Single parent, mortgage is on interest only as I've been unable to refinance
Circle of doom!

dalrympy · 18/06/2020 23:58

Yes me. End of July furlough ends and I'm redundant.

Amazingly have found another job. Income will fall by about 20% compared to pre-COVID though.

AdesteFideles · 19/06/2020 00:09

I'm sorry to hear about this, but to be honest it sounds a little bit disrespectful. I heard just this week that someone my nextdoor neighbour knows has lost a relative to covid19. There will be some economic challenges, but let's all remember why.
