Anyone being made redundant after Furlough

I’m worried I won’t have a job to go back to. I think I will be made redundant in August. Anyone else worried?

I would be even more fed up if I hadn’t been furloughed and then made redundant.

All the poor mums that can’t go back to work will loose their jobs. People shielding or have health issues, employers won’t want back as the risk will be to high. My husband had to fill in a medical form before he went back to work, his temperature is checked every day. Worrying times

@thatcarolebaskinbitch Yeah I totally forgot about the fact she'd been working!! My mind in full of claim periods and cut of dates before flexible furlough kicks in. I'm tying myself up in knots at the moment 🙈

KaronAVyrus · 19/06/2020 08:31

I’m on furlough but fully expecting to be made redundant in August. We’ve lost the season now. I’m in Scotland and the jobs market is going to be a bloodbath.

@Faraway20

This is awful to read, I'd be terrified if my job was at risk.. but.. surely the economy needs those of us with relatively safe incomes to keep spending, keep booking holidays etc. Or it will make the economy worse? If I'm wrong please tell me, because I'm choosing to spend money at the moment to support businesses, I don't feel like a fool for doing so.
Well, this is how recession works.. it's a big chain reaction/vicious circle. As people lose their jobs and lose their spending confidence, the whole thing worsens in on itself. And we're already past the point of no return.
glotterbug · 19/06/2020 08:45

Yep this is me. Currently on furlough but in consultation process.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 19/06/2020 08:47

AdesteFideles
I'm sorry to hear about this, but to be honest it sounds a little bit disrespectful. I heard just this week that someone my nextdoor neighbour knows has lost a relative to covid19. There will be some economic challenges, but let's all remember why”

What’s the point of coming into a thread to make a comment like that? It’s not a competition. FFS. Everyone knows countless people have died. What’s disrespectful is not to acknowledge that possibly will through poverty and the poor mental health linked to that.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 19/06/2020 08:47

possibly more will die

MynameisJune · 19/06/2020 09:23

And I fully expect to be made redundant, in fact I’ve been there less than 2 years so I’m expecting to be let go any time before September when my 2 years hits.

I’ve been on furlough since returning from Mat leave. I’m the only one in my team, my boss told me not to worry and he’d stay in contact every week. I’ve had nothing at all from him.

Alex50 · 19/06/2020 09:47

@AdesteFideles people under 45 have 1 in 150,000 to die from Covid, unemployment will be 1 in 10 from November, you’ll be hearing far more people loosing their jobs and home than dying of Covid, you might even be one of them.

This is going to get worse. It's good that we discuss and prepare.

littleblackno · 19/06/2020 10:41

What would be the best way to prepare do you think?
I am luck that I am in a secure job and the risk of redundancy is very low (although the job itself is likely to become more stressful and challenging).
I dont really understand how the recession may affect me but I know it will so would like to know how I can try and prepare for it- also to be able to support others in the community where needed.

Alex50 · 19/06/2020 11:24

@littleblackno your tax will go up, less people working need paying for, which comes from taxes.

@ittooshallpass

My employer didn't even bother with furlough, just went straight to redundancies. Such a shock for everyone. Half of employees made redundant in the middle of a pandemic. Furlough would have at least given staff some time to prepare for redundancy.

When this is all over companies should be named and shamed for the callous way they have behaved.

I disagree. Companies rightly expect to be able to operate as long as what they do is legal. The government made what a lot of companies do illegal and if in that circumstance they decide to stop trading, then that is a legitimate decision IMO. Anyone who believes that lockdown was a good and necessary thing needs to accept that you can't have lockdown and still expect people just to carry on serving them and providing jobs without any idea of how that's going to pan out or how much it's going to cost them in the long run. Cutting people off at the knees has a real and measurable effect and a major part of that is job losses.

@Faraway20 if you can afford it and your job is secure then keep spending.

I’ve put off quite a few purchases just to wait and see what happens. I’m not confident I’ll pick up a new job easily if I do get made redundant.

imsooverthisdrama · 19/06/2020 15:48

Ive been furloughed since lockdown , now going through the redundancy consultation so it looks likely I'll be made redundant.

sconenotscon · 19/06/2020 16:00

Me and DH both currently furloughed and both in the consultation process. Decision will be made next week but it's extremely likely we're both unemployed as of 1st July. I'm also due our second child at the end of July. Not fantastic times ahead for us as the jobs market will be saturated with applicants at the time we need financial stability the most.

Sympathies to anyone going through this

hugocat · 24/07/2020 18:14

Old thread but I was wondering what the situation is now with people? I'm still on furlough, supposed to be going back but I don't trust it and am looking for new jobs.

Alex50 · 24/07/2020 18:48

i’m Relieved to say i’m going back 3rd August.

OP posts:
Tobias1985 · 24/07/2020 18:52

Hi @hugocat. I survived my companies round of redundancy but still on furlough and been told we could be off until the scheme ends in October. It’s not ideal being on a lower salary (no partners income or anything just mine) but very relieved to still be in a job for now. I applied for about ten jobs while I was in redundancy consultation and I got two rejections and didn’t hear back from the rest. I feel awful for anyone trying to job hunt during this shit show.

esveee · 24/07/2020 21:33

My company (around 200 employees) had the majority of staff on furlough at the start. The latest update was that sales have picked up a bit and they've brought a few more back but everyone else should still expect to be on furlough until the end of the scheme. We may be brought back sooner if possible. No talk of redundancy yet, which I'm surprised about. Who knows what October will bring.

SengaStrawberry · 24/07/2020 22:21

I was in this position, going to be redundant at the end of furlough.

Thankfully I’ve not only found a new role but it actually pays £12k a year more than my old one! I’m in Scotland but it’s permanent home working for an English based company. Thank the lord as my sector up here has completely dried up.

isntthatnice · 24/07/2020 22:22

Not me but some colleagues are. I'm in hospitality

LaurieMarlow · 24/07/2020 22:26

There will be some economic challenges

Jesus. 🤯

Presumably spoken by someone not facing them. Public sector? Pensioner?

It’s going to be fucking brutal. Poverty that we haven’t seen the like of for decades.

So many children’s lives will be devastated by this.
