Anyone being made redundant after Furlough

Alex50 · 18/06/2020 15:51

I’m worried I won’t have a job to go back to. I think I will be made redundant in August. Anyone else worried?

For those already made redundant or on furlough now or about to be made redundant, do make sure you know what your situation is regarding entitlement to benefits. I think UC can take a while to come in after application so do check what the process is whilst you are in your current situation.

Don't absolutely rely on getting a new job soon - check out how you will cope financially if you lose your job and unable to get a new one reasonably quickly.

@AdesteFideles

I'm sorry to hear about this, but to be honest it sounds a little bit disrespectful. I heard just this week that someone my nextdoor neighbour knows has lost a relative to covid19. There will be some economic challenges, but let's all remember why.
You are the one sounding disrespectful. Yes, people have died from Covid but that doesn't lessen the very real fear of mass unemployment and how much this will absolutely shit up many people's lives.

You do realise that if we hit 10% unemployment it’s likely that more people will die of poverty than have died from Coronavirus? And this time it will be kids included in that.

I’m very sorry for anyone whose relatives have died from Covid-19 but I’m not sure the damage we’ve done to the country has been worth it.

userxx · 19/06/2020 06:14

There will be some economic challenges,

🤣🤣🤣. Do you think?

Alex50 · 19/06/2020 06:14

@AdesteFideles why did you even make that commentHmm

Sorry to everyone loosing their jobs and may loose their house, it’s worrying times Flowers

Can someone please explain what it was like in the 1970s do we can prepare?

JoyceByersWasRight · 19/06/2020 06:56

AdesteFideles - my DF died of Covid back in April, and we were just starting to pick ourselves up when DH was made redundant last week. Personally, I don’t think it is disrespectful for people to be discussing redundancies. I feel absolutely devastated, and that I can’t properly grieve for my dad and start to heal as we now have this major financial (and for my DH emotional) worry. I only work part time, so it’s a huge worry.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/06/2020 07:01

@AdesteFideles oh leave it out. It is not disrespectful to be talking about this. Just because people have died doesn't mean that people aren't allowed to be worried about their jobs. It's not a race to the bottom.

PurBal · 19/06/2020 07:06

I know 2 people this has happened to. Furlough has been referred to as the redundancy waiting room.

Alex50 · 19/06/2020 07:09

And goodness me, someone my neighbour knows Hmm My daughter’s best friends Dad has died of Covid, they have 6 children. It’s sad the dad died but they now have money worries as well.

Both my adult DC - work in theatre and hospitality. My DH is freelance and lost all his income overnight - works in TV. My job is under threat.

CamberGirl · 19/06/2020 07:15

@Redcrayons

I’m preparing for it. Everyone on my team is back apart from me. I’ve only heard from my boss once since April. I’ve been applying for jobs just in case.

Sorry to everyone who has already been made redundant. It sucks.

Same here. Two of us furloughed. Have been completely ignored since March. My colleague got a letter yesterday telling her she's been let go. I'm terrified I'm next. We were told our jobs were safe and not to worry.
KellyHall · 19/06/2020 07:16

Yes, dh had a meeting yesterday where they started the consultation process and completed their score cards. He says he's not worried because he'll be paid until at least the middle of September. He's so short-sighted.

potter5 · 19/06/2020 07:24

I have enormous sympathy for everyone facing redundancy. I have been on furlough since March and thought that I would be in the same position of being made redundant. Had a call this week from my employer requesting I return to work for 2 days per week from 1st July so I am grateful. Don't know if I will lose my job later in the year though. It's a very uncertain and worrying time for everyone.

This is awful to read, I'd be terrified if my job was at risk.. but.. surely the economy needs those of us with relatively safe incomes to keep spending, keep booking holidays etc. Or it will make the economy worse? If I'm wrong please tell me, because I'm choosing to spend money at the moment to support businesses, I don't feel like a fool for doing so.

BestOption · 19/06/2020 07:33

I think I probably will be. There's only me that does my job, but I work in international boarding schools (not employed by the schools though), so with not knowing when they'll be back & not knowing if/when I'll be needed, redundancy is possible/probable.

I'm also 'vulnerable' so I'm bit concerned about going back even if I'm not. (I work in very small, Confined spaces, with teens & adults)

It's pretty niche so I'll have to do something completely different, but no idea what...especially with so many redundancies in most/all sectors that there will be qualified/trained people looking for work...

I'm also over 50, overweight, & bloody exhausted. No the ideal candidate in a world of bright shiny young things!

thatcarolebaskinbitch · 19/06/2020 07:40

@Faraway20 I agree, I guess it's a fine line between spending and also keeping money in savings. I'm very lucky that I have 6 months salary in savings so I'm going to continue to spend by shopping, eating out when it's possible and booking holidays/trips in the hope that it helps the economy and most importantly local businesses recover.

userxx · 19/06/2020 07:41

@Burpeesshmurpees Employers have until the 31st of just to put any claim in prior to 30th June deadline.

thatcarolebaskinbitch · 19/06/2020 07:42

And I don't feel like a fool for doing that either. If everybody stopped spending then we would be in a much worse situation so if your job is relatively safe you should try and carry on

thatcarolebaskinbitch · 19/06/2020 07:43

@userxx you have to have been on furlough for 3 weeks by 30th June so the deadline for furloughing was 10th June.

Sandybval · 19/06/2020 07:45

British airways have applied to let all of their staff go if their YouTube channel is to be believed, just the first of many in the aviation industry sadly.

Alex50 · 19/06/2020 07:53

BA are a disgrace to their employees Angry

My employer didn't even bother with furlough, just went straight to redundancies. Such a shock for everyone. Half of employees made redundant in the middle of a pandemic. Furlough would have at least given staff some time to prepare for redundancy.

When this is all over companies should be named and shamed for the callous way they have behaved.

Werkwerkwerkwerkwerkwerk · 19/06/2020 08:05

Being made redundant in July, despite scoring higher in our matrix point system higher than others and also being one of the only ones currently working.

A bit pissed off but tbh I was due to leave two mother after anyway so in the scheme of things I'd rather it be me with a plan than someone who relies on the income.
