Cornwall, here we come!

The holiday letting agent I booked with last year for a self catering holiday let (not caravan site, private house on its own) has emailed saying government have said all going ahead With self catering from the 4th July and the rest of the monies are due now. Already paid over £600 before corona and I won’t get that back unless they can relet. Now have to pay almost another 1k I’m going and taking my own food with me. Big garden as opposed to our tiny one and I have 3 young kids. Cornish people on here are up in arms about visitors which I get with fewer hospitals but you better get ready because if the government say it’s allowed and people have paid, they will come! Just hoping that the cases are further down by aug because it looks like it’s happening

I don't understand why visitors to the holiday destinations are so ugly in their response to the caution expressed by the communities there.

Seen many posts the other way around basically calling everyone else diseased leper’s and you won’t be welcomed. Yes the companies and holiday owners based on Cornwall are insisting on taking money paid way before coronavirus. Happy to take the money and yet not want us there. Can’t have it both ways! It’s coming to a crunch point and most people will have to decide either way and I think it will be go.

It's almost like people who live in Cornwall aren't a homogenous group

It's weird to see that cornwall doesnt want tourism. My home town in ireland is highly dependent on tourism for business and they are chomping at the bit to allow people to come and spend.

I'm astounded you paid that but anyway , can you not see why residents of holiday resorts and seaside towns might wary of visitors did you have to start another goady thread just go enjoy your holiday

Have you checked that your holiday rental is big enough to fit that giant chip on your shoulder?

I hope you don’t take all this anger and resentment out on the residents when you go. Holidays are supposed to be relaxing you know.

It looks like I'm finally going abroad after all this summer so come on down

We are hoping to come on the 10th! We are staying in a caravan park but if they don’t open we are going to book through air bnb. We’ve just booked a national trust property that’s opening on the Tuesday down there too! :)

I think that sort of money is pretty standard for Cornwall to be honest.

I’ve just been reading about the dalai llama, about peace and education - and I dunno why but it makes our collective spite and handling of issues in society seem so pathetic and childish. Our society here in the uk has become like one permanent giant knee jerk reaction to tabloid hysteria.

And I live in a tourist area.

It’s standard money for a house for a family of 5 with a garden and hot tub? Booked last year so already paid quite a bit. I’m sure there are many people from Cornwall who will be welcoming tourists and their money which has been used over generations to help make that part of the country so lovely to live in- but where are those people in MN? I sure haven’t seen anyone?
To those who say we won’t be welcomed- what you going to do? Spit at my family on the street? Shout at us? Scratch my car with keys? Throw rotten eggs at my holiday let? Arrive at night with pitchforks and flaming torches? Throw a bucket of water on my picnic in an open space? Would love to know

Well we live on the South Coast (not D and C) and were overrun with Tourists a couple of weeks ago! I personally feel that if Beaches are open ,the they are open to everyone .Our friend works for a holiday Company and they are very busy with bookings ATM for July and August all over the South and other areas too.

£1600 was on the cheaper end. I was struggling to find much with good reviews and the bedrooms / space I wanted, further down in corwall for under 2k for a week!

Let's just hope other facilities like car parks, toilets etc reopen soon.

I agree we need to get the tourist trade back in Devon and Cornwall but there is nothing much open yet and the majority in the hospitality trade have no idea what is happening either.

OP, I’d be careful what you suggest. I live in a very tourism related area, albeit in Wales, and people have been keying cars, threatening arson and generally being pretty unpleasant to people they think aren’t local.

I see both sides - both i and DP depend on tourism and want the industry back up and running, but initially we had hundreds of tourists flocking to our otherwise sleepy village at the beginning of lockdown and still manage to sneak through the borders now. It’s not nice, it’s not fair and it’s not good spirited, and neither is your OP. if holiday let’s are reopen then fine, but if you go with that attitude you may well get a similar attitude in return.

As an aside, our first minister has expressed a desire to get tourism open, but (his words) only with community consent. I’ll be interested to see how that materialises because if it’s done sensibly I think it would have been prudent for England to take a similar stance.

...and this is why id rather get on a plane and go abroad!!

I'd be letting them know that you wont be paying the remainder of the balance until you see it confirmed for yourself in the news and the guidance because until that point it is just hear say.

Why so spiteful? I know of cars being keyed down here unfortunately. Some restaurants only opening for locals in summer.

Anyway, I’m sure no one here really cares what you’re doing in the summer tbh.

I think the balance of views has definitely shifted here in Cornwall now, as our cases remain low and destinations and businesses are starting to do their best to open up in different ways, and to start earning money gain and livening up our towns.

It's very easy for people to be loud and nasty on social media - in practice OP you will hopefully be welcomed as usual, and have a lovely holiday down here - I hope the weather gets back to what it was a few weeks ago!

blue25 can you name which restaurants are only opening for 'locals' and how will they police that? Seems an odd choice to me.

I live in Cornwall And work in a non tourist related business. Nevertheless my business is dependant on tourism because the rest of the economy is dependent on tourism.
Tourists are welcome as far as I’m concerned BUT they need to follow the same social distance rules as everyone else. I have noticed that people on holiday seem to abandon all the rules of their normal lives, I get that your on holiday and want to relax but the rules still apply

Have the Govt actually announced this? I would not be paying the balance of the holiday cost until I knew the Govt had announced they can definitely go ahead. Have I missed something?

I'm pretty sure everything the Govt have said about future dates is on the condition that the R0 is low enough. Isn't South West at 1.1 at present?
